Wheat Baumkuchen: Cool Noodle + Lord of the Cake Rings

When Derrick from SG Food On Foot introduced this quaint little cafe to misterchewy and I, we were thrilled by the concept of tasty and refreshing cold noodles being sold at wallet-friendly prices. As much as I would want to eat healthily, I’m also guilty of choosing sinful deep fried food over salads especially when in my opinion, the latter is almost always so unreasonably pricey. $10 for a bunch of leaves? Uh-uh, no thanks. Right here at Wheat Baumkuchen Noodle & Pastry Bar, we are talking about more than just a bunch of leaves. Five types of cold noodles, ranging from soba noodles to yellow angel hair, form the current “Cool Noodle” menu and are named after living creatures that live in cold climates. These delectable noodles are in served in different sauces and topped with a variety of ingredients such as prawns and chicken. Anyway, don’t be fooled by the boy’s expression; he was celebrating the fact that the noodles cost less than $5.

Nestled in the heart of Toa Payoh Central, Wheat Baumkuchen is not difficult to find if I were to tell you that it is located right behind where Bossini and KOI Cafe is. Yeah I assume most people are fans of KOI 😛 Besides the cold noodles, we were there for its Baumkuchen (tree cakes) too! More on that later 🙂

Reindeer Cool Noodle ($4.80)

I was very impressed by my choice of grey soba noodles in miso sauce which was light and mellow. Loved the combination of seaweed, juicy mushrooms and plump edamame beans. The lettuce provided an extra crunch to the overall dish. Be sure to mix in the sesame seeds well for an overall fragrant and nutty taste!

Just look at that mountainous heap of noodles and generous toppings! Yep, all that for a mere $4.80!

Penguin Cool Noodle ($4.80)

“I want to eat Penguin..” Hahaha sounds so cruel but that’s what BB Chew chose. Flavors were not as intense for the green soba noodles in roasted sesame sauce as compared to the noodles in miso sauce. I liked how neatly the chicken and egg were shredded. The both of us kept nodding our heads in approval as we slurped our noodles. Cool, tasty and healthy? Definitely!

Green Tea Baumkuchen ($2 with order of cool noodle, $2.50 without)

Like the well-known kueh lapis, Baumkuchen is also a layered cake except that the layers intertwine to give the cake its signature rings which look like a cross-section of a tree. Baumkuchen has its origins in Germany and hails as “The King of Cakes” due to its close connection with royalty. I had my very first experience with Baumkuchen during my trip to Hokkaido and I quite liked it. It was indeed pleasant to know that these tree cakes are available here. I counted 18 layers in our green tea Baumkuchen! I read Fen & Yuan’s review that each layer of batter is consistently 2mm. The taste of green tea was mild and sweet. Comparing the Baumkuchen’s texture to that of the kueh lapis’, we agreed that it was not as oily and moist. Makes a good tea time snack! 🙂

Strawberry Baumkuchen ($2 with order of cool noodle, $2.50 without)

We liked the green tea Baukuchen so much that we decided to get the strawberry flavored one to compare which fared better. The strawberry Baukuchen was distinctively sweeter, both in smell and taste. The staff makes it a point to warm the cakes prior to serving. We didn’t notice this for the green tea one as we left it to cool while eating the noodles. The difference didn’t go unnoticed this time; for the cake was relatively light and airy after it came out of the microwave oven. If only I live in the Toa Payoh, I would definitely pop by at least once a week to enjoy the noodles and cakes! 😛

  1. At S$4.80 and located in an actual shop front, rather than say a coffee shop stall, I sincerely worry for their going concern! Portion sizes look decent too! Being located in a, hopefully, populous and affluent neighbourhood should mitigate factors but well, All the best!
