The Orange Lantern: Worth a visit, that’s pho sure!
The thought of trying out Vietnamese cuisine has never once crossed my mind. In fact, I wasn’t even interested because I would usually stick to what I’m familiar with. I guess I couldn’t resist it after reading about all the good eats that Harris from *The Simplest Aphrodisiac has been blogging about during his trip to Vietnam. Coincidentally, my cousin texted me and asked me if I knew places around Singapore which serve a good bowl of pho. That was when I told Chewy Charles that we should ummmm.. go and eat something different, for a change! And we went to The Orange Lantern :D
I have a thing for the Rice Paper Roll with Chicken ($6.50) because of its thin and crunchy texture. Under the layer of rice paper is a layer of cabbage and under the layer of cabbage are chunks of chicken, bean sprouts and rice noodles. The pungent taste of bean sprouts might be a little too overwhelming for some, so dip it into the accompanying sauce!
The Shrimp Paste On Sugarcane ($7.50) sounded interesting enough and we almost ordered another plate after wiping everything clean. The sugarcane certainly sweetened the plump, hot and mashy shrimp paste. You can even chew on the sugarcane stick for a sweeter surprise! ;)
Frankly speaking, I don’t think I would be able to forgive myself if I came and left without trying the pho. We both had the Special Chicken Noodle Soup ($11.90). I reckon it looks exactly like an ordinary bowl of chicken kway teow soup. However, the fact that the noodle was smoother and silkier was definitely impossible to miss. The chicken broth was sweet tasting and it was on the overall, a very light and healthy dish!
The food over at The Orange Lantern is pretty affordable so it’s good if you can gather a group of friends and sample many different Vietnamese dishes! :)
