Hihi everyone! Greetings from misterchewy and missuschewy! :D How were the first few days of your CNY celebration? Hope you guys didn’t stuff yourselves with too many pieces of pineapple tarts and bak kwa YO! I’m proud to say that I only had a nibble here and there because I was too busy playing cards (read: gambling)! Haha :P This year’s CNY break is too short! Boohoo!

On CNY Eve, I wore a bright orange minimalist dress. Ok it looks kinda red in this photo. I love how flattering the cut is! Anyway, misterchewy proposed the idea of getting both our families to have reunion dinner together. I must say that it was a fantastic idea! So so so happy that our families can get along really well :D My mum recommended Hwa Seafood Restaurant at Novena because most restaurants were already fully booked.

Yay! Lo Hei always makes me happy! After plenty of auspicious wishes, the FIL cued and we all shouted “HUAT AH” together!

The Low family and the Chew family! :D The food wasn’t that great but we hope our family members enjoyed the treat from misterchewy and me.

Since dinner started early and ended early, the in-laws invited all of us over to their place to chit chat. Hehe. :)

Every CNY, we would go over to bai nian at my gugu’s (dad’s younger sister) house in the morning before going over to my maternal grandma’s. My grandpa has been staying together with my gugu’s family ever since grandma passed away a few years ago. We played one round of Monopoly Deal with my cousins, followed by blackjack, before going to my maternal grandma’s house in the evening.

A couple of weeks before CNY, I went shopping with misterchewy and this is one of the shirts that I chose and bought for him. I think he looks good in checked shirts! :P Bought the jeans for him too! Love the reflective material!

I was actually deciding if I should wear this pink dress on Valentine’s Day instead but I like it so much that I had considered re-wearing it. Haha! :P

This is Julian, my only nephew at the moment! He’s a very sweet-natured and well-mannered boy :)

Teehee! I’m a proud aunt (sad to be called ‘auntie’ though) of three adorable little girls who were born in the year of the rabbit! Little Naomi is the youngest of the three. Look at how she’s smiling for the camera! Cute ttm! :D I love her red outfit! Like a little angbao :PPP

Hubby Chewy and I spent the entire CNY Day 2 at the in-laws’ place! They invited my MIL’s siblings over and everyone gathered in the living room and bedrooms to play card games and mahjong! I think I won quite a bit in blackjack! :D Hehe misterchewy was teaching me how to play mahjong and he won some money in the process. This is the only photo I’ve got. Haha misterchewy’s nephew is really cute!

Glad that I didn’t have to work on the third day of CNY! Parents arranged for us to Lo Hei with grandpa. We picked him up from my gugu’s house and went to Tung Lok at Orchard Parade Hotel. I bought the red checked shirt for my bro!

YO everybardy! It’s Chinese New Year Eve today! I hope all of you are excited about having reunion dinner with your family and loved ones :) On Friday night, I had a very interesting gathering with my JC girl friends! Now that all of five of us have a.. *ahem* significant other, we thought that it would be fun if we brought our partners along for a little get-to-know-each-other session! :D

Meet the members of The Hooties gang! Ummm.. Not to be confused with Hooters please. Anyway there’s a long story behind The Hooties. It all started with a pervertic prank call which I got from a male stranger when I was in JC1 and this continued for weeks. Kinda hard to explain in detail.. Another time maybe! :P From the left, we have Min (Hootie Ni), Aries (Hootie Suan), Shuz (Hootie Huey), myself (Hootie Pok) and Miao (Hootie Ji)!

Shuz is the first among us to get hitched! She and her hubby, Lionel, are now staying together in the East side. I like their place! Very cosy! :)

Lionel and Shuz helped to buy all the food for our steamboat dinner. It was quite a spread! We had slices of pork belly, pork collar, tofu, meatballs, sotongballs (my favorite!), enoki mushrooms (hubby’s favorite!), cheese tofu, crabmeat stick, etc! :D

This is Miao and her soon-to-be-husband, Yun Da! They have been together for quite a few years already! Wedding bells are finally ringing! So happy for them :D

Aries and Noel were primary school classmates but they got together only many years later :P Oh, Noel and misterchewy were BMT bunk mates!

Min and Melvin got together not too long ago and I’m feeling very happy for them too! :) Yay! Hahaha anyway, don’t they look alike?! :P

Working in Raffles Place and feeling sick of the lunch crowd at Lau Pa Sat? Hop over to One Shenton where the newly opened contemporary yet casual Tokyo inspired cafe and sandwich bar, kohii, is located. The five-month old cafe is set up by a local, together with his Japanese wife. They have one goal in mind, which is to offer fresh, great tasting and healthy sandwiches to their customers. At kohii, the finest ingredients are imported from Japan and to compromise on quality is out of the question.

I was actually quite surprised to see the Mixed Mushrooms Soup ($9.80) in its cream of mushroom form as most places are starting to serve pureed mushroom soup. I personally prefer the latter for its chunky chewy mushroom bits. The mixed mushrooms soup, being a signature dish at kohii, did not disappoint too. It was very rich in mushroom flavor and does not contain cream or starch. The soup packed a punch. We like!

I only eat salad when there is some meat in it :P The Assorted Seafood Salad ($10.50), is something that I highly recommend, especially if you want to order a salad that has more bang for your buck. It is certainly very refreshing to see a chockful of seafood ingredients such as prawns, scallops, crabmeat and octopus in your salad! All ingredients were very fresh and succulent which made us relish every bite.

And you know what else really rocked our socks? It was the Goma Salad Dressing which is essentially a thick Japanese roasted sesame dressing. Very delicious and further enhanced the taste of the salad!

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you would have known by now that I love all things spicy. Surely, the Curry Chicken Sandwich ($9.50) caught my attention when I was scanning the menu. You have a choice or white bread or brown oat bread for all sandwiches. To be honest, the chicken breast meat was quite dry, and the fact that the curry was also dry did not help one bit. The taste of the curry was pretty mild too. Perhaps I should have asked for white bread?

I have to agree when we were being told that kohii specializes in mushrooms. There are different types of mushrooms such as shimeji, shiitake and button mushrooms in the Marinated Mushrooms Sandwich ($10.50) – This does not contain meat, i.e. is a vegetarian option, but it tastes excellent nevertheless! The mushrooms were cold, juicy and slippery which also means that it ultimately led to a pretty messy affair but we kept calm and carried on…eating.

Out of the 6 smoothies available, I chose the Ichigo Nana ($6.30) while misterchewy decided on Mango Momo ($6.30). We were then told that these two smoothies were named after the owner’s daughters, Momo and Nana! How concidental! Mango Momo is a combination of mango and peach, which has a few more notes to its flavor as compared to Ichigo Nana which I feel, is a much lovelier and creamy blend. For busy executives working in the CBD area, these smoothies are great to slurp on while you are on the go!

I couldn’t play tennis as it was raining that Sunday afternoon, which led to the husband skipping his gym session so that we could head out (go gaigai or jalan jalan) earlier. Since my parents were away on a short trip, we had the car to ourselves and we drove to Orchard! Wheeeee! :D Misterchewy suggested eating at Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant at Far East Shopping Centre because he had not tried the food there and was craving for some Japanese food.

Yours truly, on the other hand, had been to Rakuichi at Dempsey. That was a long long time ago but the first impression was a good one! :)

Here’s the excited boy after we have placed our order for the Mini Course ($48). We decided to have the same thing.

If there’s one thing that I could never get sick of, it would definitely be thickly sliced fresh Sashimi embedded in a basket of crushed ice! I like it when raw fish is served with ice because it ensures that the fish is adequately chilled and I personally feel that the fish’s firmness is retained.

The fish was fried to a delicate crisp and we could taste the fish’s natural sweetness and oiliness from within. We forgot to ask and I’m guessing that this is fried horse mackerel. Can anyone determine by looking at this photo? Anyway, the only thing we disliked was that there were too many fine bones which made the eating process slightly less enjoyable.

Ok this is kinda random but misterchewy has maintained this habit of uploading food pictures (amongst some others) onto Instagram. You can add him at @misterchewy! I don’t have an Instagram account yet but I will have to wait till I switch to an iPhone :P

We had the wonderful opportunity to sample the Aburi Sushi. It is a type of nigri sushi in which the slice of raw fish had been lightly flame grilled or blow torched. We enjoyed the slightly roasted smokey flavors and the soft delicate textures of the fish.

Doesn’t this small pot of Soup resemble a mini steamboat? There were an assortment of mushrooms, tofu, vegetables and salmon. The soup bore a light, sweet miso taste.

Dessert of the day was a simple yet very solid scoop of Black Sesame Ice Cream! I’m not sure if it’s homemade but it’s really really good stuff. To sum things up, we enjoyed our leisurely meal at Rakuichi.

Lunar New Year. What is the first thing that comes to your mind? Bak kwa? Mandarin oranges? Pineapple tarts? Ang bao? Mah jong? It is definitely Lo Hei (prosperity toss) for me! I love it when family and friends gather around the table with a pair of chopsticks in hand, all ready to toss the salmon yusheng. It is a very enjoyable process tossing the ingredients high up in the air while shouting out various auspicious wishes. This year, indulge in the culinary treasures as you usher in the Lunar New Year with Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant at Holiday Inn Atrium Singapore. With 9 different types of set menus that have been specially designed to cater to the various budget and group size, you get to experience the best of Xin Cuisine! We had the Xin’s Gold Leaf Australian Lobster, Canadian Geoduck Clam and Salmon Yusheng which is only available from the Bountiful Harvest ($3999++ for 10) set menu. It is indeed very aesthetically pleasing, with the ingredients planted in a magnificent ice sculpture.

The various shredded vegetables such as carrots, red capsicum, white radish and red pickled ginger take the form of a majestic dragon. What better way to welcome the Year of the Dragon?

I have always loved the sweet and tangy taste of yusheng and this time, it was no different. For the record, I had at least 3 servings that night!

The Pan-Fried Scallop with Eggplant in Japanese Miso Sauce was a mix of taste and textures. Coated with sweet yet savory miso sauce, it was a delight biting into the firm scallop and crunchy eggplant at the same time.

I’m a scuba diver and have stopped consuming shark’s fin for obvious reasons which I shall not elaborate here. My friend provided feedback on the Double-Boiled Shark’s Fin and Baby Cabbage in Chicken Broth that, “It is like trying to be too many things.” To cut the long story short, she felt that the double-boiled broth was already very nourishing and the wanton, being overly salty, spoiled the dish.

The best way to enjoy a piece of fresh fish is to steam it! Light soya sauce, coupled with chestnut beancurd, made the Steamed Garoupa Fillet with Beancurd in Light Soya Sauce all the more appetizing.

The pen cai is typically filled with food bearing auspicious meanings. Each ingredient is layered and stacked very carefully in the huge pot. Xin’s Prosperity Seafood Pen Cai ($298++ for 6, $398++ for 10) is a treasure trove brimming with lobster, abalone, shark’s fin, fish maw, sea cucumber, dried oyster, dried scallop, wolf berry, fresh scallop, jelly fish, mushroom, sea moss, bamboo pith, radish, sea whelk and Chinese cabbage. My heart is filled with love just by looking at it.

Each layer has different ingredients and everyone had at least two servings of the pen cai. As all the juices blended with each other, the broth tasted very rich and flavorsome. Ingredients were fresh and of the finest quality.

Moving on to desserts, we were each treated to a bowl of Bird’s Nest with Almond Cream. I admit that I do have a very sweet tooth and was slightly disappointed that it was not at all sweet. However, the almond cream had a very delicate and nutty fragrance and I liked that.

This sticky sweet snack is one of my favorite items every Lunar New Year! Coated in a thin batter, the Deep Fried Xin’s Nian Gao is slightly crispy on the outside while remaining chewy and pasty. Simply marvelous!

They may look like your typical sesame balls but these Fried Sesame Balls with Red Bean and Chocolate Liqueur Filling were truly mind-blowing!

This exemplary dessert had me won over with its rich, bittersweet molten chocolate liqueur.

Many weeks ago (*ahem*), I was invited to a cooking demonstration with the use of YIFON food products by Chef Eric Teo. Of course, there were some hands-on which heightened my interest in this event as I have not been able to whip up a proper meal all by myself. Secondary school home economics class not counted right? Got partner leh. FYI, my partner did the cooking and I did the washing. Well, I can cook plain rice and noodles though. After all, it’s just boiling water and throwing stuff in right? Haha.

It was my first time meeting Chef Eric up close and personal. I heard that he has been termed an ‘auntie killer’ for being very popular with many aunties because he’s full of charm and charisma. Haha I wasn’t killed because I’m not an auntie :P

With absolutely no cooking required, you can eat them on their own, complement them with rice, porridge or noodles or use them as ingredients to create delightful dishes like those Chef Eric demonstrated! And what do we do when the final product is done? We start shooting of course! :P

We started off with XO King Scallop with Spicy Golden Mushrooms & Crispy Rice Crackers, which was the most complex dish, at least it is to me. Oil was splattering everywhere when I was pan-frying the scallops!

Recipe (serves 2)
Ingredients
1 Bottle – YIFON Spicy Golden Mushrooms, drained
6 pieces – King Scallops
6 pieces – Rice Crackers, deep fried
1 tbsp – XO Sauce
1 stalk – Spring Onions, sliced
1 piece – Red Chili, diced
1/4 tsp – Sesame Oil
Method
1. Heat up wok over medium to high heat with oil.
2. Pan-fry scallops for 30 seconds on each side, add XO sauce and toss well.
3. Separately, mix YIFON Spicy Mushrooms with chilli and sesame oil.
4. Assemble YIFON Spicy Mushrooms with scallops and rice crackers, sprinkle with spring onions and serve.

Ya lah excuse me, you think what? First time fry scallop so nice meh? The previous dish wasn’t mine! It was Maureen’s. Mine is too ugly. Even Chef Eric say “Got room for improvement!” T_T Here I am with my king scallop! Hey, I didn’t score points for presentation but it was quite yummy! I like the YIFON spicy golden mushroom already! :D

The Pork Luncheon Meat Bruchetta is slightly easier to prepare. First, we had to slice the luncheon meat. If you like luncheon meat, slice it thick. If you don’t, then slice as thinly as possible. Simple. I loveeeeee Maling luncheon meat and have been eating it since young! Didn’t know that it’s part of the YIFON family. Tell you a secret. I forgot to turn on the fire and Maureen stopped me in time when she saw me tilting the bottle of oil above the frying pan. Lol!

Recipe (serves 2)
Ingredients
1 Can – MaLing Pork Luncheon Meat
1 Roll – French Baguette, sliced
4 – Quail Eggs, hard-boiled and halved
30g – Red Cherry Tomatoes, halved
30g – Shallot, sliced
20g – Sweet Basil Leaves
30g – Pineapples, diced
Seasonings
2 tbsp – Olive Oil
1 pinch – Black Crushed Pepper
1 pinch – Salt
Method
1. Slice MaLing Pork Luncheon Meat into 4″ by 2″. Pan-fry until both sides are crisp and brown. Set aside
2. Toast sliced baguettes for 3 minutes.
3. Mix hard-boiled eggs, pineapples, tomatoes, sweet basil leaves, shallots and seasoning.
4. Top toasted baguette with luncheon meat and above mixture. Serve.

Saving the best (and easiest) for the last! Do you know that our pizza tasted really delicious and finger lickin’ good with YIFON assorted mushrooms?

Recipe (serves 2)
Ingredients
1 Bottle – YIFON Assorted Mushrooms, drained
2 pieces – Pizza Crust
3 tbsp – Tomato Sauce
10g – Red Onions, diced
30g – Turkey Ham
5g – Salad Leaves
1/4 tsp – Olive Oil
1 pinch – Salt
1 pinch – Pepper
Method
1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degree, bake pizza crust for 3 minutes. The pizza crust should be golden brown but soft in the center.
2. Spread tomato sauce evenly. Top with YIFON Assorted Mushrooms, salad leaves, ham and cheese.
3. Drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake for another 5 minutes then serve hot.

Maureen and I were excited over our pizzas! Wanna guess what misterchewy had for dinner when he returned home from work that night? :P

Now that it’s the second day of 2012, I hope 1st Jan had been a good start for all of you! 2011 has been a very good and exciting year for misterchewy and myself. These were the most memorable happenings from the beginning of the year all the way till the end. I suppose the second half of the year was more interesting! :P

14 February 2011 – We celebrated Valentine’s Day with each other for the very first time! Had dinner at Orchard Central’s Sarang, which is a Korean restaurant. The then-boyfriend got me a bouquet of bears! <3

20 to 22 May 2011 – Hit the sand and the sea at Redang with misterchewy and his NTU friends! The sun seemed to be on shift, so we didnt get much of a tan. Haha! Really fun because it was our first time snorkelling together! :D

28 May 2011 – I thought we should engage in other activities other than just eating so we signed up for the Sundown Half-Marathon! Heh.. I guess we have to admit that we are getting old! BUT.. We have plans to sign up for other races this year! :)

11 to 18 June 2011 – Joined misterchewy and his parents on a one-week trip to Taiwan! Whoa ho! We ate and ate and ate and shopped and shopped and shopped! The only thing I disliked was the extremely hot weather and scorching sun. Apart from that, it was a good break away from work to spend time together with misterchewy :)

25 June 2011 – If you have not read about the surprise proposal that misterchewy came up with, with the help of his friends, you can read all about it here. I will always reminisce this day for the rest of my life. The day that I cried buckets because I was really touched by what he had come up with. :’)

26 June 2011 – This day also happened to be our 11th monthsary, which was one day after the proposal. Best way to remember it? Take engagement shots! :P

26 July 2011 – Exactly a month later, we celebrated our First Year Anniversary. Went back to Raindrops Cafe where we first became officially together. I suggested we should wear the same thing, go back to the same place and pose the same way for our photo! :P Just for the fun of it and for comparision sake!

27 July 2011 – Yay! The boy graduated from NTU with a Second Upper Class Honours in Chemical Engineering! He’s currently working in a reputable MNC and can take care of my expenses. LOL! Kidding about the second part :P

31 July 2011 – My birthday fell on a Saturday and misterchewy took me to OChre for lunch! Loved the bling bling red fossil watch that he got me :D

9 September 2011 – This is a very special day for us as it is misterchewy’s birthday and also the day of our solemnization! It was held at Grand Copthorne Waterfront. Interestingly, our post on spending our first night as husband and wife at the hotel rendered the most number of blog hits!

27 to 29 November 2011 – We went on a short and impromptu mini honeymoon to Cameron Highlands. It was very enjoyable! :D

25 December 2011 – Definitely a very different feeling altogether when you know that it is your first time spending Christmas together as husband and wife. It was also our first time watching a musical together! Well, there’s always a first for everything. Besides, we have been together for about 1 and a half years only :P

31 December 2011 – Kissing 2011 goodbye! Haha! We were all ready to welcome 2012 at Clake Quay! Had some drinks at Rebel before the countdown began. Yeah can’t believe we chose beer over fireworks but we managed to catch a glimpse outside Liang Court.
