Froth Café Singapore Food Review

A32A5683

After seeing so much hype about the taro waffles at Froth Café on Instagram, I finally popped by this relatively new place on Saturday with misterchewy, Little misschewy and my parents. I’m usually not too keen on jumping on the (new) cafe hopping bandwagon but it just so happened that we were in the vicinity and we had not had our lunch. It was around 5pm so the hubs called to make a reservation just to make sure they could accommodate all of us. Froth Café wasn’t too hard to locate; it’s at the basement of Big Hotel, near Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

A32A5668

We shared the Doritos Crust Winglets ($11.90) because it was recommended by the owner. Interestingly, the winglets had been deboned before being fried but I felt that this takes away the fun of eating a winglet. On the overall, the winglets were tender and spicy but extremely salty. We provided feedback to the owner who explained that they were still experimenting as customers previously found the winglets bland.

A32A5650

Unable to comment on the next two dishes as I didn’t try them! Fish and Chips ($16.90)

A32A5666

Pan-fried Salmon ($20.90)

A32A5656-horz

The Carbonara ($15.90) was really good! The sauce was creamy, albeit a bit watery, but once the egg was beaten in, every mouthful was heavenly. The penne was al dente and an excellent choice because it could hold the delicious sauce. They were kinda generous with the bits of bacon too.

A32A5673

And finally, this is what enticed me to pay Froth Café a visit! There are five types of waffles – Buttermilk, Red Velvet, Cheese, Taro and Banana. The Taro Waffles with Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream is a beautiful work of art. I was torn between sea salt caramel ice cream and earl grey ice cream. Can’t remember if the waffles were served warm but they were definitely very fluffy and crispy! Even Little misschewy gave her stamp of approval by not sticking out her tongue like she usually does when we attempt to give her solids! I expected the taro sauce to be immensely sweet but it was actually pretty mild. We were unable to detect any hints of saltiness in the sea salt caramel ice cream but the hubs and I enjoyed this!

A32A5680

Total bill came up to about $92. Will I return? Yes, probably to try out the other items! And I certainly don’t mind ordering the taro waffles again, perhaps with a scoop of earl grey ice cream! Kuro Kin Japanese Dining Singapore Food Review

IMG_3496

While misterchewy is still away in the States, my family celebrated my birthday with me a few days before the actual day since I stay with my in laws on weekdays. Yay! I got to eat my favorite Japanese cuisine again! My mum wanted to go to The Grandstand so it was down to Kuro Kin Japanese Dining among the few Japanese restaurants over there.

IMG_3487

Before I delve into the food review, I have to say that the wait for our sashimi was excruciatingly long when the restaurant was not even half occupied. It certainly didn’t leave a very good first impression on us. Besides, we noticed that the table next to us arrived much later but got their food served first! We asked the wait staff and it turned out that it was “the Chef’s arrangement”. I wonder is that fair?

_MG_3436

I was really bored until I noticed this cute little toothpick holder! *Meow*

_MG_3441

Received two types of appetizers on the house because they acknowledged that we had waited for too long for our food! Thankfully, the appetizers tasted pretty decent.

_MG_3442

_MG_3448

We ordered the Sashimi Take ($86) to share among my dad, brother and I. My mum is the only one in the family who doesn’t eat raw food while I can never have enough of sashimi! These were very firm, fresh and thickly sliced.

_MG_3456

I needed my rice and was trying to decide between sushi and chirashi. Decided that it was easier to share the Kuro Kin Sushi ($45). Love all the sushi pieces that I ate!

_MG_3468

Ebi Tempura ($23) was lightly battered to a nice shade of golden brown and was crispy.

_MG_3461-horz

Highly recommend the Gindara Moriawase ($26) which is grilled cod fish coated in three different sauces – sweet miso, mentaiko and teriyaki sauce. I like the mentaiko one best!

_MG_3474

We ordered the Surume Ika Teriyaki ($20) because my mum loves grilled squid with sweet teriyaki sauce. Alternatively, you can also order the shioyaki version which is coated with sea salt. The squid was still quite chewy!

_MG_3467

We also ordered two bowls of Kaisen Chahan ($12) to share because we have two big men in the family. The seafood fried rice was very fragrant albeit a little oily.

A photo with my happy Chanelle! Hopefully, she will be able to sing me a birthday song next year 😛

Chikuwa Tei: Best Chirashi in Singapore

_MG_3304

Happy birthday to me and cheers to our 4th year dating anniversary! 🙂 I think too many things happened within these four years, so much so that I thought we were together for five years already. LOL.

Here’s a quick recap:

– We got together on 26 July 2010.
– Successfully balloted for our BTO after dating for 3 months in October 2010.
Got engaged on 26 June 2011.
Solemnized our marriage on 9 September 2011 on his birthday.
Held our customary wedding on 3 March 2013.
Little misschewy came into our lives on 18 March 2014.

IMG_3289

It’s really nice to reminisce about the past and to know that we have come a relatively long way. It’s the second time that misterchewy wasn’t able to celebrate my birthday on the actual day itself because this time, he’s in the States for a two-week work stint. The first time was when we just got together in 2010 and he had to help out at his hall’s freshman orientation camp in NTU.

IMG_3286

We celebrated both occasions before he left for his trip and we finally decided to go for my favourite cuisine of all time! I think I can eat Japanese food everyday without getting sick of it. Haha who’s with me? 😛 Actually, misterchewy wanted to bring me for high tea at Ritz Carlton but the place was fully booked as it was a pretty last minute decision. With a baby in the house, most of our decisions are made out of spontaneity. High tea at Fullerton also no space. And then we wanted to try Mikuni at Fairmont Hotel, also fully booked.

IMG_3285

In the end, we were left with Chikuwa Tei at Mohamed Sultan Road which was started by Chef Peter Ho, who was also the former chef of Wasabi Tei. I wasn’t too thrilled about the ambience but all I wanted was to relax and have a good meal. We reached when it just opened for dinner so it was pretty empty but there was a queue forming outside when we left the place. Yes, you are strongly advised to make reservations.

_MG_3300

I never step out of a Japanese restaurant without ordering Sashimi Moriawase ($38)! I just don’t understand people who do not eat raw food (like my mum)! They have no idea what they are missing out. Just like Wasabi Tei, Chikuwa Tei is also very well known for its thickly sliced sashimi! It’s a party in my mouth YO!

_MG_3298

We were highly recommended to try this particular Chirashi Special Set ($68) which is only available every Sunday and Tuesday. The sashimi slices are the freshest of the lot and are not kept frozen. Every mouthful was so delightful and our favourite was the otoro. We were given three thick slices of otoro which were very high in fat content and brought the term “melt in the mouth” to a whole new level.

_MG_3308

Our Chirashi set also came with Chawanmushi, a bowl of miso soup and two slices of watermelon. The Chawanmushi, albeit a little watery, was smooth and chock full of ingredients such as mushroom and prawns.

_MG_3313

After the sashimi moriawase and chirashi, we wanted to order uni to share but they ran out of uni by then. The hubs loves scallops so we went for the highly recommended Nama Hotate ($30). It was a refreshing way to eat scallop with a drizzle of lemon juice and a dash of chili dip.

_MG_3317

Jowl Buta Yaki ($12) tasted pretty decent, especially with some beer! I think we will order more yakitori on our next visit.

_MG_3331

Chikuwa Tei’s menu is pretty extensive and I wanted to try the Fugu Mirin ($15). Tasted a little bit like bak kwa and it was exceptionally good with some mayonnaise.

IMG_3348

We spent about $270 in total, inclusive of 4 bottles of Sapporo beer. My parents and brother had dinner at Liang Court with Little misschewy in tow so that misterchewy and I could enjoy our dinner together. A big thanks to them!

Guide to Top 7 Must Try Food in Malacca

missuschewy's guide to top 7 must try food in malacca

** NEW ** Click HERE to read our Penang Food Guide compiled in 2015.

Hello chewys! Last weekend, I joined misterchewy and his uni friends on a 2D1N trip to Malacca. We didn’t exactly plan it that way I suppose, but it ended up as a purely non-stop eating trip! Quite amazed that we could stomach so much food within such a short period of time. Happy that this trip turned out to be very fruitful because we managed to source all the good eats around Malacca and here’s our very own Guide to Top 7 Must Try Food in Malacca! Enjoy! 😀

IMG_9812

1. CAPITOL SATAY CELUP @ LORONG BUKIT CINA

Satay Celup is very popular in Malacca and I’m not sure if you can find this easily in other parts of Malaysia. Of course, our goal was to find the BEST Satay Celup in Malacca! The two most attractive choices were Ban Lee Siang, which is very popular and also near our hotel, and Capitol Satay Celup, renowned for its ridiculously long queues. We decided to go for the latter since the hotel receptionist made it sound so good, like, the BEST in Malacca. Capitol Satay Celup operates from 5pm and we were advised to be there by 4pm. True enough, there was already a queue when we got there! This is the one and only Capitol Satay Celup in Malacca. Look out for the 100Plus signs.

_MG_9775

Satay celup is also known as steamboat satay, where sticks of raw or semi-cooked meat and vegetables are dipped into a boiling pot of satay gravy for several minutes. In Singapore, we have Lok Lok, whereby skewers of food are cooked in boiling water, and the satay gravy is served separately. As soon as Capitol Satay Celup opened at 5pm, we had a table to ourselves and started picking out what we wanted to eat. There is a very wide assortment available and each stick goes for as low as only RM 0.90!

_MG_9790

_MG_9792

The concept here is very interesting. The servers will start to offer you better quality items such as tiger prawns, abalone and scallops as soon as they observe that you have reached a certain number of sticks. And these sticks are also priced at RM 0.90 each! How to resist! We were also given free glasses of strawberry wine and coffee liquor towards the end of the meal.

_MG_9794

The service at Capitol Satay Celup is impeccable. From time to time, extra spices and ground peanuts will be added into the pot and the servers will stir the gravy to ensure that nothing gets stuck or burnt at the bottom. They must have some secret recipe because the satay gravy is a delicious combination of sweet-savory and is very aromatic!

Address: 41, Lorong Bukit Cina, 75100, Melaka, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Daily from 5pm (Closed on Mondays)

_MG_9846

2. GULA MELAKA CENDOL @ JONKER STREET

Although this traditional Southeast Asian dessert can be easily found in Singapore, what’s a trip to Malacca without eating Cendol? We concluded the first night of our trip with some orignal Cendol with Gula Melaka and Durian Cendol by stopping by a random shop along Jonker Street, after exploring the night market. Cendol is typically made of coconut milk, green starched noodles with pandan flavoring, shaved ice and palm sugar. This was pretty mediocre, but rumour has it that Jonker 88 serves one of the best cendol in Malacca.

_MG_9948

3. LOW YONG MOH RESTAURANT DIM SUM @ JALAN TUKANG EMAS

I’m not sure but this is probably the closest you can get for an authentic Dim Sum experience in Malacca. Low Yong Moh Restaurant was opened in 1936, which makes it the first and oldest dim sum restaurant in Malacca.

_MG_9913

The setting is actually more like an old-fashioned rustic tea house than anything else. We were there before 8.30am so it didn’t take long for us to get seated as soon as one of the larger groups vacated the area.

_MG_9921

Don’t bother asking for the menu. Instead, Mandarin-speaking staff will parade piping hot steamed or fried dim sum from table to table and all you have to do is just point out what you want. Certain items have to be specially requested for though, like the lotus leaf rice, char siew buns, corn buns, etc. Prices range from RM 1 to RM 3.

_MG_9935

On the overall, the dim sum variety at Low Yong Moh Restaurant is very wide and impressive. The next time you plan a trip to Malacca, don’t forget to stop by for dim sum here.

Address: 32, Jalan Tukang Emas, 75200, Melaka, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Daily 5.30am – 1pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

IMG_9967

4. CHOP CHUNG WAH CHICKEN RICE BALLS @ JALAN HANG JEBAT

Malacca is also very famous for its Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls and there are so many stalls to choose from while you are at Jonker Street. So much has been said for Chop Chung Wah that we decided to queue in the sweltering heat (ok pregger here sat and waited at San Shu Gong just across the street) and try it for ourselves.

IMG_9980

_MG_9995

Unlike the neatly sliced chicken meat that we are so used to getting in Singapore, the whole chicken that we ordered was chopped up in a haphazard manner and drenched in a combination of light soy sauce and sesame oil. Our verdict? The chicken was mostly tough, while some parts were quite tender. While the hand-rolled chicken rice balls were soft, moist and sticky, we didn’t exactly fancy them because the rice lacked fragrance and were just savory at best. Not sure what the hype is all about but it is evident that there were many others who loved it. So yes, it made it to our list of must try food in Malacca because one man’s meat is another man’s poison.

Address: Kedai Chop Chung Wah, 18, Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka
Opening Hours: Daily 8.30am-3pm

_MG_9731

5. JONKER 88 NONYA ASSAM LAKSA @ JALAN HANG JEBAT

I call myself a foodie but I think that misterchewy’s friends are more worthy of that title. Who would have thought of eating Assam Laksa in Malacca? I was initially skeptical but hey, Jonker 88‘s assam laksa totally blew me away.

_MG_0019

It was my first time being able to taste such a distinct fish-based broth, instead of just the spiciness and sourness from the assam laksa. I’m not sure if tuna, sardine or mackerel was used but the fish broth was certainly very spicy, tangy and flavorful. Shiok! Each bowl contains a chockful of ingredients like prawns, egg, beancurd, etc. I don’t think you can find anything like this in Singapore. It is THAT awesome. Jonker 88’s nonya laksa, which contains coconut milk, is equally worthy of mention.

Address: 88, Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200, Melaka, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Weekdays from 12pm to 6pm, Weekends till 8pm

_MG_0031

6. NADEJE MILLE CREPE @ MAHKOTA PARADE

When misterchewy’s colleague from Malaysia learned that we were going to Malacca, he urged us to try the Mille Crepes from Nadeje and also warned us that they usually sell out by evening. Good thing Nadeje is conveniently located at Mahkota Parade, where we could do a bit of shopping. There are two other Nadeje outlets in Malacca.

_MG_0074

We planned for an early tea break at around 2pm and not surprisingly, we had to join in the queue. Because we came in a large group, we had to wait for quite some time before they could accomodate all 8 of us.

_MG_0051

Once we were in, we wasted no time and ordered 8 mille crepe cakes to be shared amongst ourselves. There are a total of 18 mille crepes on the menu, such as Rum & Raisin, Double Chocolate, Banana Chocolate, Praline Lover, Royal Milk Tea, etc, and they come in non-alcoholic and alcoholic versions. Nadeje prides itself on the freshest quality ingredients that go into hand making each mille crepe. Yes, you can really taste the freshness in every bite.

_MG_0042

Mille crepes are NOT kueh lapis. The multi-layered cake is made of fresh homemade custard cream and is best eaten chilled. Remember to pair your heavenly slice of mille crepe with a pot of hot tea. We had a few mouthfuls of each crepe cake and it’s really hard to point out our favourite.

_MG_0030

If you are not prepared to wait in line, there’s an express queue for takeaways. All mille crepes will be packed away in a cooler bag complete with dry ice packs.

Address: G-23B, EG 4 & EG 5, Ground Floor, Mahkota Parade, 75000 Melaka
Opening Hours: Daily 11am – 10pm

7. A&W RESTAURANT @ DATARAN PAHLAWAN MELAKA MEGAMALL

_MG_0082

Funny how Singaporeans are always so obsessed with eating A&W whenever they make a trip to Malaysia? I must say that A&W really played a part in forming one of my best childhood memories. Loved the curly fries, root beer float and waffles with ice cream when I was young! I’m sure many Singaporeans share the same sentiments as me 🙂

_MG_0090

Although the standard of the food at A&W doesn’t excite us that much anymore, I reckon it’s still a must-eat in Malacca or anywhere in Malaysia, given the fact that it’s not available in Singapore.

Address: BD-077,078,091,092,093 & 93A / Lower Ground Floor, Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, Jalan Merdeka, Bandar Hilir Melaka
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

Brunch at Nosh Restaurant & Bar with MissTamChiak & Michelleagy

IMG_7684

This blog post is not exactly overdue but Maureen‘s birthday celebration was! Her birthday fell on 30 May. Michelle and I wanted to give her a birthday treat and the three of us agreed to meet early June but the queen had something more important (than us) and it got delayed to exactly 3 weeks after her birthday. The queen asked for brunch and I suggested Nosh Restaurant & Bar at Rochester Park because I remembered that sometime back, Maureen didn’t get to eat crab tart at P.S Café and Nosh serves crab cake benedict. Ok la, not exactly the same thing but I’m sucha sweeeet friend right? *self praise* LOLOLOL.

IMG_7688

I very long never post outfit of the day (OOTD) liao! Hahaha. Looked at this photo for very long and I’m not used to seeing myself with shorter hair and fringe as compared to my previous hair length when we went for honeymoon. Wore a peachy pink toga dress with a black and gold belt! Love everything about the dress because of its bright color, flattering cut and light chiffon material! 😀

_MG_7679

Because of the *cough cough* haze, we took a cab to Nosh. This place seems quite popular because it was packed when we went in. And I’m glad I choped us a table! Not this one la. Hahaha.

_MG_7681

_MG_7657

Can’t remember when was the last time we actually woke up so early on a Sunday to head out. I happened to be in a good mood and decided to doll up by applying lipstick and eye shadow, plus putting on falsies! Just eyeliner and blusher usually work for me. Haha ok la I know I’m lazy 😛

_MG_7659

The girls! Michelle and Maureen. M&M.

_MG_7662

Maureen and her fiancé, Kai. Upgrade and change status lo, finallyyyyyy!

_MG_7672

So coincidental that we bumped into Amanda! She was seated at the table behind ours.

_MG_7671

Group shot taken by Amanda. Thanks babe!

_MG_7639

We placed our orders and the first dish arrived after a torturous 45 minute wait. Maureen and Kai shared a bowl of Truffle Mushroom Soup ($10) which smelled really gooood! We kinda regretted not ordering this and even though our mains were not served yet, we did not want to wait another 45 minutes just for the soup.

_MG_7642

Kai’s Seafood Aglio Olio ($22)

_MG_7646

Maureen’s Crab Cake Benedict ($18)

_MG_7651

Michelle’s Nosh Omelette ($16) which I thought looked really good. Was joking that the diced roasted potatoes looked like black carrot cake. LOL.

_MG_7649

The husband’s Lamb Burger ($19)

_MG_7653

I wanted to order the crab cake benedict as well but for the sake of variety, I went for the Smoked Salmon Benedict ($18) which was okaaaay. Nothing to shout about.

_MG_7654

Nobody sang praises for their food so I guess it’s really mediocre. It’s the company that matters! At least we got to talk and catch up with one another on what’s going on in our lives 🙂

_MG_7678

We thought that desserts might be better but we were wrong. The Toffee Date Cake ($12) was too sweet.
