The Ship Restaurant: Good ol’ old school!

Through reading food blogs, factors mentioned such as the nostalgic old-school feel, wonderful ambience and commendable service were enough to convince me that it was time to visit The Ship Restaurant. More importantly, the food sounded pretty decent. I must add that Amasou, Umasou’s post was very timely and after reading it, I proceeded with making the reservations. I was actually racking my brain as to where to take Chewy Charles to dinner on his birthday. The boy kept asking where was I taking him to and it was fun dropping hints such as, “Aiya my parents go before one but we confirm never go before”. The Ship was packed to the gills on that weekday evening. We were promptly shown to a table at the far end of the restaurant, in a rather obscure corner, much to our delight and excitement.

The menu was pretty extensive but I kinda knew what to order even before looking through the menu. You see, this is the power of reading food blogs ๐Ÿ˜› Ok but of course, it’s nice to be adventurous once in a while. Although the very thought of eating snails scares some, Chewy Charles and I love escargots. The Escargots ($13.90 for half dozen) were firm and meaty. The taste of garlic was intense and there was a slightly bitter aftertaste. Both of us enjoyed our starter and we looked at the plate of empty shells longingly.

Initially, I had intended to order the Chicken Maryland but was having second thoughts because it was basically fried food. I was told by the wait staff that the Chicken Ala Ship ($15.90) would be a better choice but at the same time, was warned that it is quite “cheesy”. I couldn’t help but grin. And by cheesy, he didn’t mean corny of course. The grilled chicken was very tender and I certainly did not have any trouble cutting through it with my knife. On the issue of cheesiness, the tip-off was given for a reason and I found it to be a little too salty on the whole. Nevertheless, the ambience and the cheerful staff more than made up for it ๐Ÿ™‚

I took two bites (second bite was just to make sure) out of Chewy Charles’ Fish and Chips ($14.90) and could not help but notice that the fish was smooth and it was also very finely and evenly breaded. This is definitely my kind of fish and chips ๐Ÿ˜€
