The thought of trying out Vietnamese cuisine has never once crossed my mind. In fact, I wasn’t even interested because I would usually stick to what I’m familiar with. I guess I couldn’t resist it after reading about all the good eats that Harris from *The Simplest Aphrodisiac has been blogging about during his trip to Vietnam. Coincidentally, my cousin texted me and asked me if I knew places around Singapore which serve a good bowl of pho. That was when I told Chewy Charles that we should ummmm.. go and eat something different, for a change! And we went to The Orange Lantern 😀
I have a thing for the Rice Paper Roll with Chicken ($6.50) because of its thin and crunchy texture. Under the layer of rice paper is a layer of cabbage and under the layer of cabbage are chunks of chicken, bean sprouts and rice noodles. The pungent taste of bean sprouts might be a little too overwhelming for some, so dip it into the accompanying sauce!
The Shrimp Paste On Sugarcane ($7.50) sounded interesting enough and we almost ordered another plate after wiping everything clean. The sugarcane certainly sweetened the plump, hot and mashy shrimp paste. You can even chew on the sugarcane stick for a sweeter surprise! 😉
Frankly speaking, I don’t think I would be able to forgive myself if I came and left without trying the pho. We both had the Special Chicken Noodle Soup ($11.90). I reckon it looks exactly like an ordinary bowl of chicken kway teow soup. However, the fact that the noodle was smoother and silkier was definitely impossible to miss. The chicken broth was sweet tasting and it was on the overall, a very light and healthy dish!
The food over at The Orange Lantern is pretty affordable so it’s good if you can gather a group of friends and sample many different Vietnamese dishes! 🙂

I think the shrimp paste on sugarcane was the best amongst all the 3 that we ordered. The sugarcane juice is really sweet and it adds a different taste to the shrimp paste. The rice paper roll with chicken was a popular dish amongst the patrons that night so I guess if you need any recommendations, you can order it and try it for yourself 🙂
Haha yeah you still cant get over the fact that a bowl of ‘chicken kway teow soup’ costs that much right? 😀
I ate at orange lantern before, yup it’s not bad! there’s another vietnamese restaurant called pho in suntec too. but orange lantern probably is yummier.
yes, if you nv eat pho, u have not eaten vietnamese food. I think the thing about vietnamese food is they really go on healthier choice, chilli is rarely taken too.
Oh yeah my cousin told me about the one in suntec. Haven’t got a chance to head there though! Haha yeah i also think that vietnamese food is quite healthy! Good good 🙂
I’ve never heard of this place before! We always go to that pho place in Milennia Walk before which was i think a franchise from Vietnam but anyway it closed down. But i think there is also Pho Hoa in SG. I’m addicted to this when I was still in the Philippines. Do try Pho 99 when you had a chance to go to Ho Chi Minh…It’s like Starbucks, you can see it in every few steps. hahaha
Ooh.. We walked past one at Millenia Walk last month.. It was directly opposite Coffee Bean. Hahaha i would need to save up for an overseas trip then! 😉 But thanks for your tip! I’ll definitely keep that in mind 🙂
