Last month, our friends Maureen and Ellena organized a $10 Hawker Trail at Old Airport Road Food Centre. Were we excited? Of course we were! By each contributing a mere $10, we could sample the BEST of Old Airport Road Food Centre! Our makan kakis for the day were Derrick, Lobster and Rae! Just look at the amount of food on our table! We almost wiped everything clean! ๐
Lao Fu Zi Char Kway Teow #01-12
Opening Hours: 11am – 11.30pm
We were simply drawn by how good this plate of Char Kway Teow ($3 – $5) smelled! Upon tasting, I found that it was a little on the sweeter side. A pity that we left it to cool for too long because we were waiting for all the other dishes to arrive. Thus, the noodles and kway teow were clumped together. So remember, eat your char kway teow while it’s still hot! ๐
Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee #01-116
Opening Hours: Mon to Wed and Fri to Sun 7am – 3pm (closed on Thursdays)
The queue for Lor Mee ($3 – $6) from this stall is crazily long. I say, be patient my friend and you shall be rewarded. Rewarded with a yummy bowl of Lor Mee, that is! The consistency of the gravy is just nice, not too watery and not too thick. The noodles have a very nice chewy bite to it. We all liked the fish flakes that had been fried till its skin was a nice shade of golden brown.
Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle #01-98
Opening Hours: Tue to Fri 9am – 8pm, Sat and Sun 9am – 9pm (closed on Mondays)
My family and I always patronize this stall when the Big Prawn Noodle ($4 onwards) craving hits us! We never fail to order extra ingredients like pork ribs. The prawn broth was very sweet tasting, which makes me want to slurp everything up but while some people might find that it is not rich enough, I thought that it surpasses the standard of most places.
Xin Mei Porridge #01-91
Opening Hours: 7am – 2.30pm
There’s nothing like a simple bowl of Peanut & Cuttlefish Porridge ($2.50 onwards)! Very smooth and savory, this is my favorite among all the food that ate that day ๐ Other varieties such as sliced fish and lean pork with century egg are also available. Every bowl of porridge comes with a freshly fried youtiao.
Western Barbeque #01-53
Opening Hours: Noon onwards (closed on Mondays)
While Chewy Charles liked the unique garlic sauce, I found it a little sweet to go with the juicy and tender Chicken Chop ($5). But if you want to try the sauce, remember to request for it when you place your order!
Blanco Court Kway Chap #01-136
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 4.30pm (closed on Mondays)
If you enjoy eating pork innards, the Kway Chap ($3.30 per serving) here is worthy of mention. Kway was silky smooth (so smooth that you are better off eating it with a spoon) and the braising of the chap was fantastic.
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun #01-155
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm
Freshy handmade Chee Cheong Fun ($2) from this stall was thin and soft. Their assorted ingredients include char siew, prawns and mushroom.
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun #01-155
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm
The same stall selling chee cheong fun also sells items like Fried Wanton and Hae Zou ($4 onwards).
Tan Beng Otah Delight #01-74
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm
Every mouthful of this fragrant Nasi Lemak ($1.80) left us wanting more. The Otah ($1.50) was also spicy enough. Other than fish, there are other choices like prawn, sotong and crab meat.
Toa Payoh Rojak #01-108
Opening Hours: 12pm – 8pm
As this stall that sells Rojak ($3 – $5) is very popular, the queue really speaks for itself. The Penang prawn paste based rojak sauce was rich and sticky. Loved the oh-so-crispy youtiao and taopok!
Wang Wang Curry Puff #01-126
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm
We were really full towards the end but still managed a few extra mouthfuls of food here and there ๐ My favorite Curry Puff ($1.20) was the one with sardine filling in it. Actually, the curry chicken and potato one was not too bad as well for it was oozing with thick gravy!
Chi Shuang Shuang #01-51
Opening Hours: Noon onwards
I was really tickled by the name of this stall. It means eat until song song or eat until very shiok ah! Apart from the usual Goreng Pisang (fried banana), there’s also Fried Jackfruit and Fried Durian ($1.60 onwards)! Yes eat song song! Needless to say, a durian lover like me couldn’t get enough of the fried durian ๐
Thanks to Maureen and Ellena for organizing this event. Everyone went home bloated and happy. It was definitely a huge success! ๐
Block 51 Old Airport Road
Old Airport Road Food Centre
Your char kway teow is very delicious looking!
Haha thanks!
the cheong fun there is really good ๐ Comparable to (or in some cases surpass) restaurant standards.
Yup we all loved it!
$10 for and you get to sample all that food? Indeed quite a worthwhile meal eh!
Yeah we chipped in and shared all the food! Damn full after the entire thing!
My favorite stalls at Old Airport Hawker Centre are Mattar Road Seafood BBQ , the pepper crabs and sambal stingray are marvellous! Satay bee hoon lok lok is one of the best too which opens in the evening only and closes on every Mon & Tue. U can try the Hainanese Curry Rice which is my hubby’s favourite ๐ Too many good food at this hawker centre and prices are reasonable !
I seldom eat satay beehoon but now that you mention it, I have a huge craving! Yeah Old Airport Road Food Centre is a food paradise *drooool*
lau fu zi char kway teow is over rated, i prefer Dong Ji Char kway teow.. its also at old airport road..
