Kim’s Family Restaurant: Cheap Cheap Cheap Korean Food!

Kim's Family Restaurant

We have so many people in The Barang Barang Gang (secondary school friends from Swiss Cottage) and it has expanded from a group size of 8 to 10 right now. Ideally, we should have 16 people if each one of us introduces our partners. Yeah, misterchewy is an official gangsta! Lololol just kidding! We celebrated three September baby boys’ (including misterchewy) and one October baby girl’s birthday recently! After much discussing on Facebook, we decided on dinner at Kim’s Family Restaurant at Lorong Kilat. I used to work in a jamming studio along that street while waiting to be matriculated into NUS. Ahhhh memories..

Waiting for our table to be set up! Loving this black and white chiffon vest courtesy of ByLizzie blogshop! I’m almost always in dresses because I’m lazy about having to mix and match. Well, this is easy. White tube top, black shorts, vest and heels!

Us :)

And after waiting for what seemed like eternity, we are at Kim’s! Very interesting Korean restaurant because of the graffiti on the walls. Here’s a photo of Hubbie Chewy and me while the rest were busy scanning the menu!

It was jaw dropping when the waiter started laying out the banchan (side dishes) on our tables. Because of our relatively large group size, we had two tables to ourselves. 12 side dishes for each table! How generous is that?! I think other Korean restaurants typically serve up to 6 or 8 sides. However, I heard that Kim’s serve a whole fish as banchan too! We didnt have it that day 🙁 Yup, and the guys had this hungry-cum-worried look on their faces when I promptly flashed my camera. Hence, one photo for 12 banchan. It was quite a spread – kimchi, sausages, potatoes, cucumber etc. And the sides can be replenished! Just ask nicely 🙂

              Stir Fried Rice Cakes ($6)

We had two appetizers to be shared among ourselves. I’m so in love with stir fried rice cakes and I must order these whenever I step into a Korean eatery! Slightly spicy but extremely chewy! I love everything chewy 😛

        Spring Onion Pancake ($12)

Another must-order dish is the spring onion pancake! This is very delicious and packed with crunchy vegetables. A crowd-pleaser that is easily gone in seconds.

        Kimchi Fried Rice ($12)

I reckon that Kimchi fried rice is one of the easiest-to-cook Korean dishes. It probably takes only 15 minutes and requires very basic ingredients: kimchi, steamed rice and egg. Very simple but the outcome is a very flavorful and mouthwatering bowl of kimchi fried rice 🙂

              Cheyuk Toppap ($15)

Two of our friends had the stir fried pork on rice. Looks like it has been strongly flavored with chili!

        Seafood Soup with Noodle ($12)

As usual, I prefer noodles over rice. There were simply too many types of noodle dishes to choose from! Kinda pressurizing because everyone was done with their orders and the waiter was peering down on me :S Not only is Kim’s generous with their side dishes, my bowl of seafood noodle came with soup filled to the brim. The soup was a mix of sour and spicy, very addictive. The chock-full of seafood was too much for me to handle on my own!

        Black Bean Paste Noodle ($12)

Looks like another fuss-free dish! Thick wheat-flour noodles with black bean paste! It’s actually the equivalent of the chinese zha jiang mian. This is something that I would try next time I visit Kim’s!

        Spicy Cold Noodle ($12)

One of the guys ate the spicy cold noodle and had difficulty finishing it. It looks really really spicy, doesn’t it?! Anybody game to try this? 😛

Most of the mains are priced at about $12 to $15 which I would consider very affordable. Plus, there’s only 10% service charge! Cheap, cheap, cheap! And the 12 side dishes! Oh, I’m going back soon!
