Wan Dou Sek: Unique & Comforting Dim Sum 24/7!

Wan Dou Sek 24-hour Dim Sum

I wouldn’t really say that we stumbled upon Wan Dou Sek Dim Sum which to me, is like an unpolished gem. The husband and I fell in love with this place when the in-laws took us there for breakfast. ‘Wan dou sek‘ means ‘found something to eat’ in Cantonese. It also sounds like ‘126’ and it is a coincidence (or maybe not?) that this dim sum eatery is located at 126 Sims Avenue. Pretty interesting huh? 🙂 So why do I call this place an unpolished gem? Wan Dou Sek is truly an unpretentious dim sum eatery, so don’t expect fanciful teapots and cutlery. You step in, take a seat, place your orders, eat, pay up and leave. I don’t suppose anybody would want to linger around and chat. Wan Dou Sek is definitely a place that I will keep revisiting because they have so many things to offer on their menu! Apart from your typical dim sum items, there are plenty of interesting offerings, including crab beehoon! And like many other places, there are bound to be some hits and misses. More hits than misses for Wan Dou Sek. Read this: Wan Dou Sek is open 24 hours! Hurray! 🙂

Right after our first visit, we knew that we would be back very soon! Exactly two weeks later! Is that soon enough? 😛 We were excited to make our way that and meet our friends!

Really thankful that misterchewy knows the way there! After much walking and crossing X number of streets, we realized that we were not the first to arrive! LOL. We caught Maureen and Derrick munching away on char siew sou -_- Anyway, as you can see, Wan Dou Sek is very unpolished and has this rustic vibe to it. I know what else caught your attention. Now, don’t tell me you are going to buy 4D number ok.

Us @ 126

          Honey Lemon Tea ($2)

Surprise surprise! Drinks are served in large plastic containers. I’m not sure if these containers are treated as disposables. Huge sigh if yes. Second time here, second time drinking honey lemon tea! Very refreshing with tiny bits of jelly!

          Egg Tarts (3 for $2)

The husband calls this “Shiny Shiny Egg Tart”. We initially mistook them for molten egg tarts but it turned out to be oil on the surface. The crust is not flaky but the egg tart is so soft that it crumbles wonderfully at the slightest bite.

        Fried Pork Intestines ($6)

I’m quite ok with pork intestines but not for misterchewy because he has low tolerance for these innards which can smell and taste quite bad if the cleaning is not done properly. We found these fried pork intestines extremely addictive because they are thin, crispy and taste really great!

Lean Meat Enoki Mushrooms Roll ($6)

If you like enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon, then I think you will love these too! It’s the same thing except that these are much easier to chew. Must order!

        Char Siew Rice Roll ($3.50)

I personally thought that the char siew rice roll is not that fantastic, but it ain’t that bad either. The rice roll is quite thick and firm and a special sauce is being used here which is more sweet than savoury.

                Kong Ba Pau ($3.20)

I thought I would be guilt ridden from eating kong ba pau but these are so bite-sized that I can easily finish two or three in one go! The meat is very soft and tender but the marination didn’t really quite come through.

        Egg Yolk Lava Bun ($4)

We couldn’t find egg yolk lava buns listed anywhere in the menu and was truly delighted when the waitress asked if we wanted 流沙包. Delight turned into disappointed upon discovering that the egg yolk is not in its molten form. It must have been 奶王包 (milk custard buns) in disguise.

        Prawn Dumplings ($4.50)

The waitress suggested these 虾饺王 to us as an alternative since har gau was sold out. I think there are bits of mushrooms and the overall results in a very crunchy bite. Nothing spectacular though.

Crab Beehoon in White Pepper ($10)

Five of us shared a medium serving of crab beehoon. It’s quite unbelievable that it costs only $10! The gravy is infused with a delicate crustacean flavor, while the addition of white pepper was adequate to tingle the taste buds. While I have heard that it’s best to eat the crabs warm while letting the noodles cool to soak in the flavor, I reckon this works better for thin beehoon than the thick ones!

Kuromi

Hubby Chewy and I did some window shopping and we spotted my favorite Kuromi! Wheeeee! Kuromi is ‘evil’ in a cute way! Just like hubby’s Don’t Care Bear shirt from Threadless! 😛

Rilakuma

Ok la I’m a sucker for all things cute! We also found Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma in matching outfits! Awwwwww.. Anyway ‘Korilakkuma’ sounds pretty vulgar to me eh. Hahahaha! It’s Deepavali tomorrow! Enjoy! 😀
