Celebrate Mother’s Day at NOX – Dine in the Dark

Tasting Invite

image2

When NOX – Dine in the Dark first opened its doors sometime around the third quarter of 2013, there was plenty of hype because the very idea of eating in complete darkness was intriguing and exciting to many. Shortly after its opening, I came across a handful of reviews online and was very tempted to check this place out but at that time, I was in my first trimester of pregnancy and didn’t think that it would be such a good idea. Decided to put it off till much later but I kind of became consumed by motherhood and ended up forgetting all about it!

image5

image4

Naturally, I was really enthusiastic when I received an email for a media tasting so on Monday evening, misterchewy and I turned up at NOX 20 minutes early. We made ourselves comfortable browsing the drinks menu while the staff did the necessary preparations. It was a pity that misterchewy didn’t get to try the Skippy Dip as the restaurant ran out of peanut butter so he was recommended the Blue Curacao while I chose the Rubus Pink. Both cocktails are really pretty as you can see from the photo and I liked my choice as it was sweet and also not overly potent.

image8

image11

We were also served our amuse bouche at the lounge and soon after we had to lock up all our valuables, in particular mobile devices and other items that give out light or glow in the dark. Like I had mentioned in my earlier posts, I am obsessed with my iPhone and I actually spent the last couple of minutes typing away furiously, trying to post a photo of the cocktails we had on Instagram. LOL.

image1

You are also strongly encouraged to visit the washroom before heading upstairs for dinner. I was very paranoid so I went twice! Hahaha.

black

The dining area is situated on the second floor and we were introduced to our server, Hafiz, who was a very friendly chap. Going up the flight of steps would lead us to pitch black darkness, hence we had to form a line by holding on to each others’ shoulders with Hafiz leading the way. As we were shuffling our way up, those horror movie scenes started popping into my head! AHHHH I really felt like smacking myself. Suddenly, Hafiz paused and announced that we have reached our table! He guided misterchewy to his seat, and then me to mine. I could feel the cushion and the table but not sure if I positioned myself correctly and asked Hafiz stupidly, “Am I facing the right way?” to which he laughed, “Yes you are!”

black

Hafiz then went on to brief us about our 3-course dinner. Each course would consist of 4 different dishes served in individual bowls placed on a large plate. We were asked to feel for our cutlery and napkins on our right and subsequently tasked to pour water into our own glasses. At this point I almost panicked but told myself to remain calm. I ran my fingers along the side of the table and reached for the bottle of water. Instead of holding the body of the bottle like I normally would, I held its neck and poured really slowly. Dipped my finger into the glass to gauge how much I poured. No spills there. Phew! As we were waiting for our food, we waved our hands in front of us but nope, can’t see nuthin’! The hubs asked Hafiz how do the servers manage to serve in the dark and Hafiz explained that all of them are visually impaired and NOX is like their second home. I kinda felt emotional after he returned to the kitchen and thought long and hard about how difficult life is without our sense of sight! 🙁

black

Hafiz served our appetizers and boy, the food smelled really good! We were told to start off with the bowl closest to us (6 o’clock) and proceed in clockwise direction. I shall not spoil the fun by revealing what we ate that night. Anyway the menu changes every two months. I have to say that it was really fun pressing the bowls close to our lips and shoveling food into our mouths, all the while exclaiming throughout the meal. Good thing we were the only diners in the restaurant when we had our appetizers and mains. Halfway through our desserts, Phoebe and her husband entered the restaurant. I was 100% sure because I heard Hafiz address the couple as “Phoebe and Jonah”. Hahaha! I think they were seated probably two tables away from us and the conversation between Phoebe and her husband was kinda funny which livened up the atmosphere because before their arrival, misterchewy and I were like whispering to each other.

black

We called out to Hafiz when we were done with our desserts. I held onto Hafiz’s shoulders and he asked, “Ok are you guys ready?” The silly hubs exclaimed YES! and I was like “WAIT! NO! HE DIDN’T HOLD MY SHOULDERS!” Funny la this misterchewy. Hafiz kept reassuring us that we were walking on flat ground because we were taking like small baby steps. HAHAHA. I was so relieved when we finally saw light and shook hands with Hafiz. He was such a wonderful host!

image9

It doesn’t end here! We had to fill in a short questionnaire listing what we think we had just eaten, after which pictures of the dishes were revealed to us on an iPad. I think we almost nailed it! I would also like to add that the food prepared by Head Chef Desmond Lee, formerly from some of Singapore’s highly-acclaimed and most decorated restaurants including Ember, Braise, as well as Private Affairs, is seriously delicious! The hubs and I were very impressed that NOX is not just another gimmicky restaurant.

Koobits Singapore Math Portal

Advertorial

During my school days, I had a love-hate relationship with mathematics. Thankfully, I had competent tutors to turn to and of course, practice makes perfect! I have not been in touch with the current curriculum and syllabus being taught in schools and honestly, the seemingly difficult and impossible to crack Mathematics questions that have gone viral online makes me feel very worried that as a parent, I might not be able to guide Chanelle in her studies, especially when she enters primary school in future.

Koobits 1 in 5

I found out about KooBits ProblemSums online portal, which is currently used by 1 in 5 primary school students to help improve their mathematics. I have nieces and nephews who are in primary school, so I thought I would recommend KooBits to them if I really find it useful!

Pri 1 topics

Here’s taking a glance at the Primary 1 mathematics topics.

Dashboard

From the dashboard, users can select “Self Practice”, “Homework” or “Challenge”. Parents can also register and view their child’s performance report and also get alerted on their child’s homework.

P1 mechanical sums

Within “Self Practice”, there are mechanical sums, problem sums and high ability questions to complete.

Self practice 1

Students can zoom in on areas that they are particularly weak in and keep practicing until they feel confident about moving on. I reckon it’s really cool that there are short and concise videos which are supposed to help children retain information in a more efficient manner.

Self practice 2

Questions are labelled according to their level of difficulty. There is also a video tutorial for every question that serves as a step-by-step guide. I feel that this is very conducive in promoting self-learning in children.

Homework March 2015

Apart from homework created automatically by KooBits, teachers and parents can also log into the Maths portal and create new homework for the children!

Create Homework

Homework creation seems like a no-brainer!

Daily Challenge

I believe most kids will enjoy the KooBits Challenge! Besides the daily challenges that they can participate in, students can also challenge their friends and win prizes.

Watch this video and find out more about KooBits and how it can benefit your child!

Parents, feel free to make the best out of the 6 months FREE trial offered by KooBits by clicking here http://products.koobits.com/problemsums/singapore

Little Misschewy Had a Farm First Birthday Party!

IMG_5735

It has been almost a month since I received the photographs taken at Chanelle’s One Year Old Birthday Party in March! Over the years, I had been bombarded with photos of children’s birthday parties on Facebook and finally, it’s my turn! LOL. I was really excited when it came to the planning stage and it didn’t take me very long to decide on the theme, which was Little Misschewy Had a Farm, inspired by the classic nursery rhyme! I specially chose this because it was the first nursery rhyme my mum sang to Chanelle and she ALWAYS sings this. The party was held at one of the garden bungalows at Aloha Loyang. It’s very spacious, with a living room, kitchen and 4 bedrooms. However, I wouldn’t really recommend it for parties because the living room is not air-conditioned.

I also bought a photo prop but someone chucked it in a corner and we totally forgot about it until the party was about to end and many people had left already.

Toozo Town: Starring Your Child in Songs and Stories!

Advertorial

Toozo Town

In this day and age, we find it increasingly difficult to function without technology. I will have to admit that I absolutely cannot live without my smartphone. I rely on it so much that when I’m with Chanelle, I find it impossible to put my phone away even for a few minutes. I think it’s because of this, Chanelle finds my phone more attractive than all her other toys and books. Sometimes I play nursery rhymes via YouTube but Chanelle doesn’t sit still for more than 2 minutes, thus leaving me at my wits’ end.

A world of joyful learning

Recently, I was introduced to Kloneworld, a group of storytellers with a twist. Kloneworld passes on stories that inspired and entertained us when we were kids, onto the next generation by using a mix of technology and creativity. Instead of plain books and videos, Kloneworld puts us inside the movies, animations, comic books and toys we enjoy. When we can actually see ourselves star in our own movies and comics, we enjoy an unmatched personalized storytelling experience like no other! Sounds interesting? You bet! The Chewys had a wonderful time bonding over the unique, fun and educational Kloneworld ToozoTown, a virtual world where kids can see their avatars come to life.

How to take a good photo

To get started, simply download Kloneworld for FREE and sign up for an account. In order to start making your Klones, you need to upload passport type photos for best results. Ideally, there should be even light without shadow on face, face should be looking at camera with mouth closed and forehead visible.

Manage Klones

Tadah! Here are The Chewys’ Klones! It was very tough to take a proper photo of Little misschewy who refused to keep still and look straight at the camera. Thank goodness her avatar turned out to be irresistibly adorable!

Kloneworld Videos

Everyone starts off with 1000 koins upon signing up. Some of the content are free, while others can be redeemed with koins.

IMG_1662

The very first product that we created was the “Welcome to Toozo Town” video. The content took only a couple of minutes to be generated and a notification will be sent to your email account.

We are very impressed by how realistic our avatars are! Kloneworld cleverly makes the Klones perform a wide range of expressions and actions such as blinking, smiling, talking, singing, and dancing, etc.

Chanelle loves the videos that I had created for her! I think it was probably her 5th or 6th time watching the Welcome to Toozo Town video but she was so captivated by her own avatar that she kept her eyes glued to the screen and was seen ‘dancing’ to the music.

123 father daughter

I am especially fond of the videos that put mummy/daddy and child together!

Cuteness overload! Even misterchewy couldn’t resist replaying the video a few times!

IMG_1663

Besides videos, you can also create books.

fox

wolf

Kloneworld Toozo Town is not all about fun and games. There is also an educational aspect that imparts moral values through traditional stores like The Fox & The Crow, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Kloneworld Printed Books

You know what’s really cool? You have the option of purchasing the printed version of the book which you created! At just SGD9.99, you get a paperback A4 sized color printed book with your very own Klone in it!

Have Fun!

After two weeks of playing around with Kloneworld Toozo Town, I am convinced that kids will benefit from this educational app through knowledge and values imparted by the various stories. Kloneworld is a Singaporean company, launching its first product exclusively in Singapore, and then the rest of the world. You may download the FREE app HERE! Some of the paid content can be redeemed with koins, which you can earn by inviting friends to use the app. Have fun!

OSIM uMagic: The World’s First Magic Hands Technology

Advertorial

DSCF6890

I’m not afraid to admit that I cannot live without my iPhone. It’s the first thing I greet every morning and the last before I go to bed at night. It has to be with me 24/7 (except when I’m taking a shower of course) and I find myself constantly texting friends and loved ones, replying tons of emails and also checking out social media updates on Facebook and Instagram. Alarm bells started to ring when I realized my fingers becoming numb after excessive usage of my phone! It was then that I knew I had to give my fingers a break. It was quite worrying, so I decided to find out more about it online.

DSCF6894-001

Apparently, I was suffering from ‘Text Neck’, a global epidemic resulting from widespread overuse of handheld devices, causing repeated stress on your neck while looking down at the screens! I was shocked that the strain on my neck actually travelled all the way down to my fingers! Not only that, I face the computer for hours on end at work. I know that instead of adopting a good sitting posture, I’m so used to hunching over, which further strains the muscles on my neck and shoulders. At times, I go home with a bad headache, or neck and back pain. To further aggravate my problem, I have to take care of Chanelle when I reach home from work and she weighs about 10kg now! She’s not even learning how to walk yet, so I have to carry her in my arms and boy, I can really feel the additional strain on my back and shoulders! Sometimes I find myself lamenting to misterchewy that I seriously need to sign up for a massage package and beat myself back into shape but who am I kidding? I cannot stand some stranger touching me, let alone give me a massage for 60 minutes. I tried getting misterchewy to massage my shoulders but obviously, he’s not trained to do good job (hehe.. sorry hubby!).

Application Shot_06

After years of innovative massage technology, OSIM’s latest massage chair, uMagic, is the perfect solution to ease the tight and tense muscles around our head and shoulders. OSIM uMagic offers massage movements similar to a masseur’s hands with finger pressure and grip to relieve aching neck and shoulders.

A32A6304

I put uMagic’s signature ‘Magic Moments’ program to the test and viola! If I’m not allowed to use the word SHIOK, I would say that it feels MAGICAL. Why magical? I was treated to a powerful, deep-tissue massage with life-like hand movements by OSIM uMagic! The patented hand-grip massage is the world’s first Magic Hands massage technology, designed to extract and relieve deep-seated muscle aches and tension especially around the neck and shoulders with its 7 levels of protrusion.

A32A6305

I also tried another uMagic’s signature program, ‘Shoulder Delight’, which is specially designed for quick relief of neck and shoulder ache by devoting 80% of uMagic’s unique hand-grip massage technique attending to the neck and shoulders and 20% for loosening tension and stiffness on the lower back. Unlike the conventional massage chairs that massages the bones of the shoulder blades without providing much relief, which is pretty much superficial, I could really feel the uMagic easing the tension of the muscles of my neck and shoulders. After 15 minutes on the uMagic, I walked away feeling liberated!

A32A6356

Besides the above mentioned signature programs, the OSIM uMagic also has an extensive suite of Lifestyle Massage Programs that are tailored to satisfy the diverse needs and well-being of the family. For instance, ‘Chill Out’ provides head-to-toe pampering to unwind and relax the body and mind, ‘Lumbar Care’ maintains a healthy back by loosening lower back tension, while ‘Sports Recovery’ promotes relaxation and recovery of muscles used in sports, and many more. As you can see, the types of massages provided are very diverse and there is something for everyone!

Application Shot_08

I was deeply impressed upon learning that users can even download new massage programs into the OSIM Massage Chair App on their devices and transfer them into the OSIM uMagic! This is certainly very value for money!

Beauty Shot_03 with Cropping Guide

One other thing which struck me was how elegant and sophisticated the OSIM uMagic is. Prior to this, I was under the impression that massage chairs were bulky, dull and boring; something which I would never want to have in my house. The uMagic exudes classiness and is incredibly sexy, with its streamlined design and polished chrome plated curvatures. Gotta love the quilted and modern weave inspired leatherette. I would say that the uMagic is certainly a beautiful piece of art! Apart from that, the foot massager can be fully retracted under the seat to provide more living space. When extended completely, it can be used as a calves-ankles-feet massager for a more holistic massage. Impressive!

A32A6343

If you are like me, who suffer from neck and back aches all the time, I urge you to experience OSIM’s Magic Hands massage technology at any OSIM outlet! Your muscles will thank me, or rather the OSIM uMagic after that 😉
The OSIM uMagic retails at a special introductory price of $4988 (UP $5288). It is available at all OSIM outlets, road shows and online at www.OSIM.com

The Chewys’ Hong Kong Trip Video!

During our recent trip to Hong Kong, we took some videos just for the fun of it and decided to compile the snippets together to depict our entire vacation! Both misterchewy and I don’t have any prior experience with video editing and stuff, so it took us quite a while to figure things out. Hehehe please bear with us because we know that this video is very amateurish but we reckon it’s a nice change to be able to document our trip in a different manner. Having said that, do look out for the photos that we will still be posting on this space soon!

Recently I was invited to try a website called ShopBack, which is a cashback website that gives you rebates for buying through them. When you buy through their website, they get commission from the brands, which they split with you as cash rebates! It’s pretty useful because they have websites like Expedia and Agoda, which means I can get cashback rebates for hotels or flights next time. Enjoy and happy hump day! 🙂

Chanelle’s First Lunar Birthday Celebration

A32A6216

Hello chewys! The hubs and I took leave from work on Monday because it was Little misschewy’s first lunar birthday! It didn’t feel very long ago when we celebrated her lunar 4th month by letting her lick a chicken drumstick, etc. You can read about it here and also compare how much she has grown! First things first, we helped Chanelle put on a pair of new shoes before letting her step on two giant ang ku kuehs. The Chinese believe that this ensures a smooth journey in life.

A32A6249

A32A6251

A32A6255

This is not just for first lunar birthday. In fact, my family has this tradition of eating mee swa with hard boiled egg on the day of our lunar birthday every year.

A32A6263

Candid moment caught on camera by misterchewy. Hehe.

A32A6266

A32A6221

And now, for the fun part! Apparently, Zhua Zhou (æŠ“ć‘š) is one of the most important traditional customs on a child’s first lunar birthday in China, which supposedly helps to predict his/her future, depending on the item picked. Here are the items we laid out: Ruler, Chicken drumstick, Seal, Book, Dollar note, Calculator and Stethoscope.

A32A6224

Chanelle went straight for the dollar note and she couldn’t quite make up her mind as she picked up other items as well.

A32A6232

She finally settled for the calculator!

A32A6282

According to Chinese traditions, baby’s maternal grandmother is supposed to give the child a pair of shoes. So here’s a very lovely pair of Melissa shoes from my mum to Chanelle.

Check out the short video that we made for Chanelle’s first lunar birthday celebration! Enjoy! 😀

Win a 5D4N Japan Trip for 2 with Ayataka Green Tea!

Advertorial

A32A6175

Konnichiwa~! Want to win a 5D4N trip for two to Japan? Read on!

I am a huge fan of Japanese green tea and ever since I was given the opportunity to sample Heaven and Earth Ayataka Japanese Green Tea back in the middle of 2013, I am truly a convert and have never looked back!

Before my experience with Ayataka, I was mainly drinking Japanese green tea in the form of powder (matcha) or tea bags. I was intrigued by Ayataka not only because it comes in cans and bottles, but also due to the amazing fact that Ayataka Japanese Green Tea is brewed using carefully selected tea leaves, contains no preservatives, and is both sugar free and calorie free!

A32A6197

Besides that, Ayataka is not your ordinary ready-to-drink green tea. Do you know that Ayataka contains matcha powder and a unique blend of natural ingredients which creates distinct cloudiness just like authentic Japanese teapot-brewed tea! The cloudiness can be seen just by gently swirling the bottle before drinking and you can enjoy the experience of drinking traditional green tea anywhere and everywhere!

Just to share, in a taste test conducted in Kyoto, Japan, with 100 maiko (apprentice geisha) and geiko (geisha), Ayataka emerged amongst other leading Japanese green tea brands in Singapore as the closest to authentic Japanese teapot brewed tea, as well as the best tasting Japanese green tea!

A32A6152

I reckon that Ayataka Japanese Green Tea goes extremely well with just about any type of food! However, I’m more inclined to pair it with my favorite Japanese cuisine and I personally find that Ayataka Japanese Green Tea tastes best when it is chilled!

10430430_459432684220004_6698076157109776965_n

One important thing! Sample Store is not to be mistaken for monthly subscription beauty boxes as it is an entirely different concept altogether! Members of Sample Store are allowed to redeem whatever product they would like to try, instead of receiving products that they are not keen in.

Sample Store review and rate

Another highlight of Sample Store is its review and rating system which helps members decide if they should purchase a particular product. Honestly, I have never come across such a com-prehensive rating review which gives so much information that will aid in consumer’s decision making. Also, 1 point will be awarded for every review submitted. These points are required in order for you to redeem the free sample products!

Absolutely FREE!

Isn’t the process fuss-free? Simply register for free, add your desired items to your cart and receive it at your doorstep! The registration process is very simple and it took me only a couple of minutes to type in all the necessary details. Click the link on your email to verify and you are good to go! You can even log in via your Facebook account with just one click! How convenient is that?

Sample Store baby category

Mummies like me will be pleased to know that there is a new Baby & Kids category on Sample Store. Apart from kids related products, you can even find trial music and maths classes for your kids! However, as it is a relatively new category, samples are limited but not to worry, there will be more in the near future! There is also a short survey that you can fill in after registering where you can indicate the brands and products that you are interested in. I would definitely like to sample various diaper brands as well as baby food!

If you have a particular product in mind that you would like to sample, simply key in your search in the search box, or filter your search by checking off the types of products (e.g. face mask) that you are keen in! I’m definitely keen on the eye masks! Was quite thrilled to receive a travel-sized Darlie Expert White toothpaste which I’m gonna bring along for my trip! Occasionally, there will be regular-sized products available for sampling, so keep your eyes peeled!
