The Chewys’ Family Trip to Bangkok Day One: Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 & Sukhumvit Soi 38 Street Food

P7280018

Hellooo chewys! I wanted to blog about our Bangkok trip earlier while it was still fresh in my mind but unfortunately, the bombing took place at Erawan Shrine shortly after we got back and I thought it wasn’t such an appropriate time to share our travelogue so I decided to delay it for a bit. As I had mentioned briefly in my previous posts, this trip’s agenda was to celebrate our 5th dating anniversary as well as my birthday! I never had a birthday trip before so I was rather excited even though I had been to BKK a few times. Hehehe 😛

P7280001

We booked an afternoon flight so that it wouldn’t be so rushed for us. With a little one around, be prepared to spend at least twice the amount of time than you normally would. We used to take about an hour at least before we could head out of the house but now we need to wake up extra early to start preparing! I’m also quite paranoid when it comes to packing because baby’s stuff are usually necessities. If I could say so myself, I think I almost brought the whole house to BKK. LOL XD

P7280011

Much love to Changi Recommends for lending us one of their overseas Wi-Fi router. The Changi Recommends booths are located in all 3 terminals and are open 24/7. It was very convenient for us as we only had to pick up the Wi-Fi device after checking in our luggages. That saves us on delivery charges! Upon your return, simply return the device by dropping it off at the Changi Recommends booth at your arrival terminal. Now that’s hassle-free! The last thing you would want is to fret over the collection and returning of your Wi-Fi device, so I’m really glad that Changi Airport Group established this subsidiary in 2012 to save travellers all the unnecessary trouble while providing affordable internet access to keep us connected during our trips.

P7280006

A shot with Little misschewy’s favorite durian before we wave goodbye to my in-laws!

P7280022

Our third family trip this year! We travelled to Phuket in January and Hong Kong in March 🙂

P7280028

A wefie before take off! I’m not sure if the monkey face by Little misschewy was intentional but I’m posting it up anyway!

P7280029

P7280035

I don’t know about you but I love plane food! Somehow, plane food makes me really happyyy! This was some fish spaghetti and it was quite good!

P7280042

But we couldn’t really eat in peace with an active toddler who refuses to stay in her seat.

P7280043

The hubs Tula-ed her and walked up and down the aisle a couple of times and she finally conked out. Zzz.. I think misterchewy looked sleepy too. Hey, nobody said parenthood would be easy 😉

P7280049

Sawadee ka~ Welcome to the Land of Smiles! 😀

P7280052

We were desperately trying to hire a cab using the Grab Taxi app but to no avail. I guess the airport is too huge and the drivers ended up waiting elsewhere even though I had typed out the exact location where we were standing. Some drivers called but there was a communication breakdown and we were like argh ok nevermind forget it. Wasted my overseas call money! Lol. In the end, we decided to try our luck and went downstairs. Ahlamak! Should have just come here earlier la! Just get a printout from the machine and there will be a taxi car plate number stated on it. Plenty of taxi drivers waiting there!

P8010888

A few hours without Internet connectivity made me feel uneasy so I switched on our Wi-Fi router as soon as we touched down. The hubs benefited from this as well since the router is able to connect up to 8 devices simultaneously. If it wasn’t for this router, I couldn’t have posted so many photos during our trip on my Instagram and Facebook page 😛

P8010856

Because of the traffic jam, it took us almost an hour to reach our choice of accommodation, Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11, which is one of the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) properties. Hotel accommodation in Bangkok is fairly affordable across the board. We went ahead with Aloft because we could earn Starpoints and the hotel rates were really attractive. Plus, the hotel is located quite near Nana BTS Station, which is a pretty centralized location.

P7300527

Aloft Hotel also provides complimentary tuk tuk service to and from Nana BTS station.

P8010890

Aloft hotel has this very cool and artsy fartsy vibe which I think most youngsters would appreciate. Lol.

P7280068

Our Aloft Room spans about 30 to 33 square meters – plenty of space for Little misschewy to roam around even with a playpen in the room. I love the layout of the room and also the idea of waking up to a nice view of the city upon waking up.

P7280055

Our ultra-comfortable platform bed was topped with plush bedding.

P7280077

P7280072

P7280075

P7280076

P7280061

IMG_4639

The bathroom is also very spacious. There is a sliding door to separate the walk-in shower from the vanity sink.

P7280056

In case you are wondering, that’s a bottle sterilizer which we requested from the hotel.

P7280059

P7280065

The floor can be very slippery for toddlers so please request for a baby bath tub!

P7280066

P7280071

The view from our room.

P7280078

Hahaha failed wefie with the bubs because she just didn’t want to sit still on my lap even for 3 seconds.

IMG_4658

I actually planned to go to HERO Food & Gathering for dinner but misterchewy, being a fuddy duddy, was more keen to check out Sukhumvit Soi 38. I mean most guys should be quite thrilled to be eating in a restaurant full of Marvel superheroes right? So Sukhumvit Soi 38 it was. We took a cab and it was a huge mistake because the jam was horrendous. Should have taken the BTS instead.

P7280081

We found it strange that there were only a few stalls there. Little did we know that Sukhumvit Soi 38 was closing down and most stalls had relocated elsewhere.

P7280080

We walked all the way to the end and started with the wanton noodle stall. This was not bad but the slices of char siew were pretty good stuff.

P7280083

P7280087

The phad thai was so damn good that we had to resist ordering another plate in order to save space to try other food.

P7280093

We saw this stall selling sticks of meat and seafood. Basically, you pick out the sticks that you want and someone will barbecue the food for you. We tabao-ed some back for our supper.

P7280094

P7280096

P7280098

P7280092

Wanted to try more food but the little one was cranky already. Settled our dessert before heading back to our hotel.

P7280091

The mango sticky rice was amazing! Very sweet and juicy mangoes and the glutinous rice was wonderfully soft and chewy.

IMG_4649

That’s all for our first day in Bangkok! Keep a lookout for day two!

Pince & Pints Singapore Food Review

P9092054

Pince & Pints officially opened in July last year and refusing to jump onto the bandwagon like everyone else, here I am reviewing this lobster bar at Duxton Road more than a year later. LOL kidding. Truth is, we weren’t invited for any tasting (it’s ok la we can afford to pay hahaha) and this place doesn’t take in any reservations. We actually swung by Pince & Pints last year with two other friends but were told that the waiting time was estimated to be about 2 hours. Ridiculous or not? Anyway, Pince & Pints will be opening up a second level next month, which means more seats for everyone and shorter waiting time!

P9092053

The hubs had always wanted to visit Pince & Pints, and given that our agenda was to celebrate his birthday, I was obliged to make him happy. Hahaha. Of course, we are still bummed out by the fact that we didn’t manage to try Burger & Lobster when we went to London for our Europe honeymoon trip in 2013. It was depressing because we specially made a trip to Burger & Lobster three nights in a row. Sad story but let’s not go into it.

P9092056

After work, we wasted no time and chionged to Duxton Road. The place was relatively empty before 7pm and we were ushered to the second table nearest the entrance. There were only 4 items on the menu – namely Live Whole Lobster (Steamed or Grilled), Chili Lobster with Mantou and The Lobster Roll, all priced at $58++. When we visited, the new Truffle Lobster Roll ($68++) had not been launched yet which was a pity because WE LOVE TRUFFLES.

P9092070

My date for the night! 🙂

P9092067

When the servers offer you these aprons (or are they bibs?), do not turn them down! Eating the lobsters, especially if you order the chili lobster, can be a very messy affair 😉

P9092071

The hubs initially wanted to order the Live Whole Lobster but he changed his mind and chose the Chili Lobster with Mantou upon knowing that I wanted that too. More variety for the blog mah! LOL. Very noble ah, misterchewy 😛

P9092073

I wish they would come up with a black pepper lobster instead because I’m not the biggest fan of our Singapore style chili sauce. The hubs offered me half of his Chili lobster and surprisingly, the sauce wasn’t as crappy as what I had expected. Pince & Pint’s special chili sauce recipe uses ingredients like roma tomatoes, ginger, lemon grass, garlic and egg. The sauce was full-bodied and tasted a little spicy. Of course, this played an excellent supporting role to the star which was the freshly flown in lobster from North America. Firm, succulent and meaty best describe the lobster we had!

P9092076

I was trying to decide if I should opt for the steamed or grilled version of the Live Whole Lobster and went with the latter. Served with mesclun salad, sour cherry, balsamic dressing, shoestring fries and herbed butter sauce, this dish was truly a beauty waiting to be photographed from all angles. No I’m just kidding because more than half the kitchen staff would look amused. #truestory 😛

P9092078-tile

I absolutely love how the lobster was grilled to perfection! It was still chunky and juicy, plus the natural sweetness of the lobster really shined through. Paired with the herbed butter sauce, the taste of the grilled lobster was totally divine. My only gripe, however, was that my lobster had giu chwee (shrunk in size)! There was significantly lesser meat than what we had for the Chili lobster. Maybe the steamed lobster would have been a better choice!

P9092060

I rarely say this but service was attentive and top notch. Plates were changed, water was refilled, wet tissue packets were given out, all on a very prompt basis without us even having to ask!
Will we ever be back? Oh yes we will jio all our friends! Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

4th Wedding Anniversary Marina Mandarin Staycation Review

A32A6847

Happy 4th wedding anniversary to us! We celebrated the special occasion in advance by taking a day off work for a staycation at Marina Mandarin hotel last Friday. The husband and I didn’t have any concrete plans until I chanced upon Marina Mandarin’s flash deal on their Facebook page, promoting 50% off their usual room rates which was impossible to resist! Booked a room without having to think twice! 😛

A32A6848

We haphazardly threw in some clothes and other stuff into our mini luggage before leaving our house that morning. Reached Marina Mandarin around 1.30pm and there was already a queue at the check in counter. The check in procedure also took up quite a bit of our time.

A32A6825

We were given a room on the 16th floor which is pretty high! It was great because the room I booked promises a view of Marina Bay. Actually, Premier rooms are all located on higher floors of the hotel.

A32A6831

A32A6712

TADAH!! Our Premier Marina Bay View room was incredibly spacious and I appreciate it especially when Little misschewy is with us. She has more room to walk around and explore without bumping or knocking into hard surfaces. Of course, the bed looked way too comfy to her too 😉

A32A6714

Our well-appointed Premier room exudes contemporary elegance, with modern furnishings that feature a combination of glass and rich fabrics. I was so tempted to just put everything down and jump into bed.

A32A6716

From a blogger’s perspective, the executive desk and ergonomic chair provide a comfortable and organized area for you to work on your laptop or tablet. Hehe.

A32A6709

The marble-clad bathroom was super spacious, featuring a deep-soaking marble bathtub as well as a separate glass-enclosed shower.

Everything you need is within reach!

P9041855

A32A6719

Housekeeping finally sent the baby cot to our room and it’s a great way to ‘confine’ the little one so that we don’t have to chase her around. Haha.

A32A6722

P9051938

Time for milk!

A32A6749

A32A6842

We went round to explore the hotel and were intrigued by these bird cages that we saw.

A32A6833

A32A6835

A32A6836

A32A6843

A32A6839

There are a handful of dining options at Marina Mandarin, namely Aquamarine, Peach Blossoms, Atrium Lounge, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Cafe Mocha. I have been to Aquamarine with my colleagues and their buffet dinner is pretty good!

A32A6850

One of the things that we like about Marina Mandarin is that it is linked to Marina Square, making it extremely convenient for hotel guests.

IMG_5579

The little one fell asleep in the carrier while we were deciding what to have for lunch. We then went to Teppei Syokudo at Millenia Walk for our favorite kaisendon!

P9051947

And also hazelnut chocolate honey toast at Dazzling Cafe!

P9041884

Went back to our room to rest and freshen up before heading out again for dinner. Kiddy ride for Little misschewy to reward her for behaving well. Lol.

P9041867

I had actually made reservations at Bread Street Kitchen but subsequently cancelled it after reading not so good reviews. In the end, we settled for Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant at Capitol Piazza! It wasn’t such a good idea because we were still full from our lunch and it’s tough to order Chinese dishes for sharing when there are only two people. We ordered half a roast duck with two bowls of plain rice.

P9041873

By the end of the dinner, I was bursting at the seams. Haha.

P9041880

Obviously the hubs is a bad influence because he suggested that we go for round two right after Little misschewy fell asleep.

P9041881

A32A6820

Admired the beautiful night view of Marina Bay from our balcony before we slept.

P9051930

The hotel gave us a complimentary chocolate cake to celebrate the special occasion but I forgot to take a photo of it. The little girl loved it and kept asking for more!

House of Seafood at The Punggol Settlement

P8100961

We went to House of Seafood at The Punggol Settlement for my birthday dinner with the fam. Reached there quite early and took some photos of Little misschewy while my parents were ordering food.

P8100959

Now that the cheeky girl knows how to walk, she just wouldn’t stand still for a shot! Lol.

The Black Pepper Crabs were da bomb though! I hate chili crab and will never ever order it. Haha. My parents like chili crab but since we were celebrating my birthday, black pepper it was!

The Benjamins Singapore Food Review

P8141074

If you have not heard of The Benjamins at Forum The Shopping Mall, then shame on you. Hahaha ok la just kidding. BUT seriously, if you are active on Instagram, it’s really quite impossible to not be bombarded with photos of these ridiculously colorful and over-the-top milkshakes that are currently available at The Benjamins, previously known as Benjamin Browns Bistro and Bakery. These milkshakes have taken social media by storm and during our visit last week, every table had at least one of these milkshakes.

P8141044-horz

The cafe is very small and seats no more than 30. Luckily I arrived early and managed to get a table while waiting for Mag. A crazy long queue started forming after 7.30pm and I could almost feel death stares in our direction as we were taking our own sweet time taking photos. LOL. #sorrynotsorry Everyone around us were also busying Instagramming the milkshakes lor!

P8141058

When I first took a quick glance at the menu, I realized the food at The Benjamins is quite expensive! Anyway, I went ahead to order the 200g Canadian Pork Chop ($25) because it was calling out to me. I must say that it didn’t disappoint as it was very succulent, just that it could be a little bit more tender!

P8141063

Mag had the 400g Duck Confit ($32) but wasn’t particularly impressed. She mentioned that at least the potato gratin was nice!

P8141051

We came here for THIS. Actually, we were planning to order one each since it’s so Instagram-worthy but the price is.. Ouch. Instead of vanilla, we opted for Old School Nutella Banana ($16) for the best of both worlds – it looks aesthetically pleasing and tastes yummy too! Vanilla would be too boring for our taste buds.

P8141065

HAHAHA did you notice that the cotton candy shrank and most of the iced gem biscuits rolled off the whipped cream?! I was also trying hard not to laugh out loud when a girl screamed because her ice cream cone fell out. LOLOLOL.

P8141068

We split the bill which came up to about $40++ per person. Cafe hoppers, please take note. Haha. If you just wanna find out what the milkshake hype is all about, then skip the mains and go for the shakes! 😉 Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

Dazzling Cafe Singapore Food Review

P8020935

Hello! The Chewys are back from our Bangkok trip and I met Pei Rong for my birthday dinner on Sunday evening. She suggested Dazzling Cafe at Capitol Piazza which was totally fine by me, except that I was a little hesitant because I dislike having to waste my precious time queuing. Dazzling Cafe doesn’t accept reservations so we agreed to meet at 5.30pm for dinner which is super early la!

P8020932

Indeed, there wasn’t any queue but we still had to wait for quite a bit before one of the service staff attended to us.

P8020912

We were whisked off to the second floor of the cafe which seats about 7 to 8 tables.

P8020923

Us and our mains! We wanted to order the SG50 promo set which includes 2 drinks, one choice of main (only two choices), one dessert toast, and then top up another main dish but turns out that this promo is only valid today onwards!

P8020917

My Mentaiko Spaghetti in Cream Sauce ($18.90) was marvelous! The spaghetti was al dente, and the white wine cream sauce wasn’t too rich or creamy. Topped with generous amounts of cod roe, my choice of main proved to be excellent.

P8020922

Pei Rong had the Spicy Seafood Tomyam Tomato Spaghetti ($22.90) which is a Singapore’s exclusive dish. She ‘donated’ her mussels to me and I think the taste of tomato kind of covered up the taste of tomyam quite a bit.

P8020914

And it’s time for DESSERTS! Whoohoo!!

P8020925

Keep seeing this Matcha with Azuki Beans Honey Toast ($19.90) being posted on Instagram so we know we just had to order this! Don’t you agree that it’s so pretty? Taste wise, it is quite good, and the matcha ice cream is seriously da bomb! We requested the toast to be crispy when being asked but felt that it still wasn’t crispy enough.

P8020927

Thanks Pei Rong for the birthday treat! See you really soon for yours! 😀

Our First Visit to Skinny Pizza!

P6260161

TGIF!! Decided to roll out yet another super short post today! I guess nobody’s interested in reading about what we had at Skinny Pizza but who cares? Hahaha. Yeah this pizza chain has been around for quite a while now and there are a total of 4 outlets in Singapore. We visited the one at Raffles City Shopping Centre after our trip to Cool De Sac, an indoor playground at Suntec City.

P6260162

We met up with Bee for dinner and after much consideration, decided on having pizza instead of ramen. Haha. So first up, we had a trio of starters to share amongst ourselves – Truffle fries, Sweet potato nibblets and Pork Sausage. Chanelle loved the truffle fries!

P6260157

The English Breakfast ($24) had just about everything. Smoked bacon, sunny side-up egg, roasted Roma tomatoes and mixed mushrooms on a roasted Neapolitan-style tomato sauce. Garnished with rocket, basil and Parmesan, this pizza was lip smackingly delicious!

P6260159

I love love love anything truffle so we also ordered the Wild Truffled Mushroom ($29)! It was so damn good and the mushrooms were so juicy! Honestly, I think I wouldn’t have any problem with polishing off the entire pizza on my own because the pizza is so… SKINNY! It didn’t really feel that substantial. Hehehe. *Glutton mode on*

P6260166

Will definitely visit Skinny Pizza again when the pizza craving hits! 😉 The service was also quite good!

The Line at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore

P5300044

Back in end May, my family and I celebrated my brother’s birthday by having buffet dinner at The Line at Shangri-La Hotel. Although we don’t really fancy buffets, we have always wanted to try the food at The Line because it’s so widely raved about. Ask anyone where’s the best hotel buffet in Singapore, and most people are inclined to reply The Line! Whenever I go for buffets (which is quite seldom), I head straight for the seafood section to check out the oysters because those are my favorites! Apart from oysters, there are mussels, prawns, king crab legs and the like. Eat until shiok!

P5300040

Another favorite station of mine, Japanese sashimi and sushi!

P5300036

Really fresh and good quality sashimi! Yums!

P5300048

Digging into my all time favorite oysters!

P5300041

The Line has a wide variety of cooked food but I was too busy eating to take many photos 😛

So that’s how we celebrated my bro’s birthday this year!

Concetto by Saveur

P6130328

Hello chewys! Been busy lately and didn’t have time to update this space! Boohoo I have so many backlogs and stuff I wanna share, so here’s a short post on Mag’s birthday celebration at Concetto by Saveur. For those who don’t already know, Mag is Chanelle’s Godma! Haha. Of course Chanelle had to be present!

P6130326

The Godma was late from her facial appointment and we were famished, plus we had to rush off for a movie after that so we ordered some food while she was making her way down. The Concetto Pasta ($4.90) was very appetite whetting and supposed to be shared between misterchewy and I but I was so tempted to polish this off on my own! LOL.

P6130342

P6130335

The hubs’ Fruitti De Mare ($15.90) was essentially freshly made fettuccine with spicy pink arrabbiata sauce, served with mussels, prawn, squid and crab meat. It probably doesn’t look like much but trust me, it was SO DARN DELICIOUS.

P6130344

P6130339

Touted as one of the Chef’s Recommendations, I thought that the Duck Panzerotti ($14.90) was disappointing and fell short of my expectations. I think they could have been more generous with the shredded Saveur duck leg confit in those half-moon shaped pasta.

P6130337

Mag had the Pollo Allo ($14.90) which was made up of pan-seared boneless chicken, stuffed with mushroom duxelle, served with potato puree shimeiji mushroom and cognac cream sauce. There is an option to top up $3 for truffle mash. I’m glad she enjoyed her dish!

Power Our Dads’ Smiles with Oral B Power Toothbrush this Father’s Day!

Advertorial

P5310087

Yoohoo! Father’s Day is just around the corner! I’m so excited to share what I’m giving my father this year that I can hardly contain my excitement! But first things first, how many of you are actually getting a gift for your fathers? Do you know that 12% of children in Singapore would get their mum a present but not their dad because dads are harder to shop for? I admit that thinking of what to get for my dad as his Father’s Day present is getting more challenging each year because I’m running out of gift ideas! It’s always the same few things – shirt, tie, belt or wallet! This year, I thought long and hard. Ever since I was in secondary school, I have had female friends and colleagues telling me that my dad is very youthful and suave for his age. Of course, I’m secretly happy to hear such compliments about my old man and it has also helped me decide what to get him for Father’s Day! My dad is a typical man who loves gadgets so why not give him the perfect gadget to power his smile? Certainly, he’s gonna look more charming than ever! Hehe.

P5310146-001

Since young, my dad had been emphasizing to my brother and I, the importance of brushing and flossing our teeth. When it comes to oral health and hygiene, the one brand which I can trust is Oral-B because it is the worldwide leader in the brushing market. Part of the Procter & Gamble Company, the Oral-B brand includes manual and power toothbrushes for children and adults, oral irrigators and also interdental products, such as dental floss. In fact, Oral-B manual toothbrushes are used by more dentists than any other brand in the U.S. and many international markets.

P5310097

As our fathers age, there is an even greater need for them to take care of their oral health and hygiene as the natural aging process takes a toll on their teeth. As children, we should educate them on the need to make the switch to power toothbrushes! I’m sure most of our fathers are quite stubborn resistant to change as they are very comfortable with manual toothbrushes which they have been using all their lives.

P5310125

P5300032

Lately, my dad has been complaining that his gums bleed even though he had tried a few different types of manual brushes but none seem to work for him. It was also because of this which prompted me to get my dad a set of Oral B Power Toothbrush – Professional Care 3000 (D20 3 Mode), in addition to the good reviews that I had read online!

P5310110

Here’s taking a quick glance at the unique and outstanding features of the Oral B Power Toothbrush – Professional Care 3000:
– 3D Technology: Oscillating / Rotating + Pulsating
– 8,800 Oscillations Per Minute
– 40,000 Pulsations Per Minute
– Visual Pressure Sensor help reduce brushing force
– 3 Brushing Modes – Daily Clean, Sensitive, Polish

With up to 48,800 unique oscillating / Rotating + Pulsating movements per minute compared to merely 600 for regular manual brushing, it is no surprise that the Oral B Power Brush cleans FIVE times better along the gum lines compared to manual brushes! That’s very impressive considering the fact that people usually neglect brushing along the gum lines which is extremely important too.

Also, the Oral B Professional Care 3000 allows you to set a timer so that you can be sure that brushing takes place for at least 2 minutes. By incorporating 3D-technology which is supported by numerous internal and external studies both clinical and laboratory, the 2 motions – oscillation and pulsation provide a thorough cleanse tooth-by-tooth. The Oral B Professional Care 3000 also features a pressure sensor that helps reduce unnecessary brushing force that is exerted on your teeth and gums!
