A couple of weeks before the Circle Line opened on 8 October, Derrick from sgfoodonfoot had this idea of ‘eating along the circle line’! It elicited a great response from most of us! Hehehe.. First time wearing a Julius Monkey top! I like to tease the husband that this must be my 聘金 (betrothal gift) because he presented me a big paperbag containing two tops and a set of pyjamas from Paul Frank two weeks before our solemnization, much to my amusement! Being the nice wife that I am, I ironed his clothes and styled his hair before setting off to meet our friends at Ghim Moh Food Centre! Oh actually we went for dim sum with the in-laws too 😛 But still, after much queuing and laying out all the delicious food, we got hungry hungry hungry! Many people treated us as food directory leh. “Excuse me, where did you buy the Putu Maryam?” “小妹, 你这个去哪里买?” I simply pointed at Derrick. LOL. Anyway my favorites were the Indian food from Heaven’s Indian Curry, assortment of roasted meat from Jiu Jiang Shao La and char kway teow from Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow. You can read Maureen’s post and also Ellena’s for a more comprehensive review.
After the yummy hawker spread, we hopped onto the circle line and our next stop was Holland Village! One of my favorite hangouts 😀 Excited to be present on the day of the opening! 😛
Look who’s excited too? Little Rey! Glad to have such a cutie with us that day! 😉
We headed straight for The Daily Scoop upon reaching Holland Village station! BB Chew and I agreed on sharing a double scoop portion so that we can try different flavors. We ended up eating only our own choice – Utterly Avocado for me and Salted Mr Brown for him! >_<
We wanted to relieve our childhood memories at Haw Par Villa! Visited this place quite a number of times when I was still very young. Didn’t quite like it because of the gruesome depictions of hell which was kinda horrifying for a little girl. *shudders* I think it should have been rated like NC-16 or M-18! Haha. However, everything seemed pretty mild when we walked the entire trail. Hehe 长大了!

It was a good way to spend the Saturday with a group of like-minded friends and foodies! 😀
It was quite sometime ago when Jacob from Cook.Snap.Eat.Love tweeted if anyone of us would be keen on a makan session at his place. I follow Jacob’s blog very closely and have always marvelled at his culinary skills! I was very sure that he wanted to whip up something in his kitchen and indeed, he had that plan in mind. Jacob grows his own microgreens as seen in the above photo and used some to garnish the soup we had for dinner! Interesting, isn’t it? 🙂
Since misterchewy and I were the earliest (we reached on the dot while the rest were late!) we sneaked into Jacob’s kitchen and caught him when he was cooking the duck confit. In fact, he started preparations the week before! Don’t ask me how he did it but he did it. Oops sorry a bit of a spoiler there! Jacob’s girlfriend, Chloe, made these pretty Ispahan dessert for us! 😀 😀 😀
Entrée – Cream of Mushroom Soup
First on the three course menu was Cream of Mushroom Soup. All of us oohed and ahhed over it, no kidding! What a superb starter it was! Jacob used a great variety of mushrooms but I can’t remember how many different types went in there. Portobello mushrooms, blue oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms and shitake were some! The texture of the soup was like that of puree – thick, creamy and chunky. I enjoyed every bit of it and it was a delight to not only be able to drink but ‘eat’ my soup at the same time!
Main Course – Duck Confit
Cooking duck confit is a major project and it’s seriously an uphill task that not just any Tom, Dick or Harry can handle. Jacob got worried when all of us became quiet but that’s because we were too engrossed in eating! The skin of the duck was crispy and the meat was quite fork tender. I would consider Jacob’s version of duck confit to be somewhat leaner than those that I have tried.
Dessert – Ispahan
Hardcore dessert and pastry lovers would know who Pierre Hermé is. The Ispahan is one of his signature creations, and it’s really delicate and exquisite. In shades of soft pink and red, complete with raspberries and a rose petal on top, this pastry is too dainty to be eaten. Crisp chewy macarons sandwiching a layer of raspberries on smooth rose buttercream, with a lychee in the center constitute the Ispahan. Chloe sure has potential! She was also thoughtful enough to make her Ispahan less sweet to suit Singaporean tastebuds.

It was another awesome gathering with the bloggers. Fantastic food and lovely company I would say! 🙂 Oh did I mention that misterchewy and I had another dinner to celebrate my grandpa’s birthday right after this? Hehe 😛
Last year’s Mooncake Party at Daniel’s place was a very successful and memorable one. We clearly had a severe overdose on mooncakes, mooncakes and more mooncakes as each of us brought along a box, which resulted in 10 boxes of mooncakes! So this year, we agreed on one box per pair which is much more manageable. Fen and Yuan were kind enough to invite us over to their new home and while we were given a tour around the place, BB Chew told me that he couldn’t wait for our BTO to be ready so that we can have a cosy little space all to ourselves! 😀
Regent Hotel’s White Lotus Paste with Double Yolk and Melon Seeds
Phoebe and Chloe brought these traditional baked mooncakes from Regent Hotel which were packaged in a nice box with a detachable bird cage. The egg yolks were really huge and I reckon that this will make a great gift if you want to please your folks or in-laws! 😉
Mandarin Orchard’s Baked Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste
This year, Fen and Yuan had sampled a great variety of mooncakes from different places and introduced to us two mooncakes from Mandarin Orchard. I’m a fan of macadamia nuts for its delicious flavor and smooth crunchy texture. A plus point is that the white lotus paste is low in sugar. It’s a winner!
Mandarin Orchard’s Baked Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamón ibérico
The baked mooncake with mixed nuts and Jamón ibérico is Fen’s and Yuan’s favorite of all the mooncakes that they have reviewed this year. It was my first experience eating mooncakes with (Iberian) ham! Nice mix of savoury and sweet. Taste aside, the texture of the filling was akin to that of a muesli bar I suppose. If you would like to try something different, this is highly recommended.
Eater Palace (食珍)’s Teochew mooncake (Yam with Salted Egg Yolk and Yam with Pumpkin)
I think Daniel and Lay Sian are obsessed with yam mooncakes! Actually I also like 😛 This time, the mooncakes are from Eater Palace. I like the unique contrasting combination of flaky crust and smooth yam paste!
Jewels Artisan Chocolate’s Mini Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes
Chewy Charles and I settled for mini assorted snowskin mooncakes from Jewels Artisan Chocolates as he simply could not forget his beloved mooncake with salted caramel truffle 😛 My other personal favorites include the champagne ganache truffle and espresso truffle. The adventurous might want to try Jewels’ mini snowskin mooncake with korean black garlic which is rich in antioxidants!

A big thank you to Fen and Yuan for their warm hospitality! Happy Mooncake Festival to everyone! 😛

Last weekend, BB Chew and I met up with the gossipy foodies for lunch at 许俊盛 (隆记) Teo Chew Cuisine! This eatery has been around for more than 60 years and it has been changing its premises for a good five times already! We initially lost our way as we ended up along Joo Chiat Place instead of Joo Chiat Road and were famished by the time we found the place. It is never easy to decide on which cze char items to order when you are with a group of friends because most would go, “Anything anything”. In any case, we finally ordered after much prompting from the service staff 😛 The braised platter certainly was aromatic and further whetted my appetite. The watery Teochew style braising sauce is not overly spiced and you can be sure that the braised platter, consisting of pig intestines, pig skin and tau pok and tau kwa, was braised just right and had absorbed all the wonderful flavours of the gravy.
Pork Trotters (Tendon/Thigh) ($6)
We were expecting an entire pork trotter and were rather surprised by the presentation here. There were very little fatty parts in this one. All that we got were mostly very lean and tender pieces of meat. Definitely a must-order to go with a bowl of hot teochew muay!
Steamed Mullet (Seasonal price)
I was secretly hoping that we would be able to savour the steamed pomfret but it seemed like every other table sitting around us had ordered the steamed mullet. Thus, we just had to have the same thing. Haha. The fish was really fresh but I will have to be honest with this one. The steamed mullet has this slight muddy flavor and is in fact an acquired taste.
Teochew Style Prawns with Beancurd ($15)
I liked everything about this teochew style prawns with beancurd dish – from the big juicy prawns to the beancurd with a slightly firm deep fried texture and silken smooth inside. Also worthy of mention is the rich-tasting gravy that is oh-so-addictive!
Preserved Radish Omelette ($5)
Omelettes are one of my all time favorites to go with porridge. The preserved radish omelette was light, fluffy and fragrant! I think I can even eat it on its own 😛
Traditional Prawn Roll (Heh Chor) ($6)
The slices of traditional prawn roll are crisp on the outside and slightly moist on the inside. I would have preferred a crunchier filling.
Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal ($7)
Unlike the stir-fried kang kong with sambal that I have eaten at most places, these gave a good crunch with every bite. It was a pity that the sambal wasn’t really spicy at all.
I would personally recommend 许俊盛 (隆记) Teo Chew Cuisine if you happen to be around Joo Chiat area as this place serves a great variety of hearty and delicious teochew fare. It was nice catching up with the rest and keeping ourselves updated with all the recent happenings! 🙂

When the much talked about Antoinette opened sometime around late May this year, I’m pretty sure it got some of us excited. Well-known former executive pastry chef of Les Amis Group’s Canelé, Pang Kok Keong is the man behind Antoinette which is situated near Lavender mrt station. This post is long overdue actually. Heh heh 😛 The food bloggers planned a meetup since Elaine and Glenn were back, separately (lol), from New York and Perth, for a short stay! 🙂 I will let the photos do the talking ok? The mains were taken by me while misterchewy shot the desserts! I liked my eggs florentine and the desserts were generally nice 😀
I once stumbled upon an interesting question on Twitter: “What do you think of people who take photos of their food?” So what does the above photo tell you? 🙂
Heh heh. It just so happened that the both of us were craving breakfast food for dinner 😛
Classic Eggs Florentine ($14)
My classic eggs florentine was served with poached eggs on toasted brioche which seemed like a nice alternative to the usual english muffins. It kinda felt as if I was eating eggs with toasted bread though. So.. On second thought, I think I’d still prefer my eggs wth muffins 😛 I particularly liked the creamy hollandaise sauce which had a very mild sweet sourish lemony taste.
Antoinette’s Breakfast ($20)
Egg with grilled bacon, sausage, pain de mie toast, basket of viennoiseries and orange juice. Definitely something to fill you up!
Nordic ($16.50)
For the health freak in you, (oops Elaine, I’m not implying that you are one) there’s always smoked salmon with lots of green.
Gnocchi Carbonara ($16.50)
It has been a long time since I last had gnocchi and I liked it for its doughy chewy texture! Can’t remember who ordered this but it sure looks good!
Wild Mushroom Risotto ($20)
This is another dish which I would very much love to try if I ever pop by Antoinette again.
Mont Blanc ($8.50)
And now we have the desserts! Whoohoo! If you love chestnuts, you will love this. The strands of sweet nutty chestnut puree were simply irresistable!
Saint Honourl’ Amour ($8.50)
This is really pretty! Something for you to hold and admire for a long time before you finally decide to devour it 😛 A very sweet-smelling/tasting, girly dessert which I did enjoy.
Chocolicieux ($9.50)
When we were eyeing the desserts at the counter, I was like.. OMG! Magnum ice cream! (Except that it was a little more bling bling with that layer of shimmery gold) We just had to try this! Hahaha! It’s chocolate. Eh what did you expect?
Brittany ($8)
A dainty piece of cake. Nice to look at but it was kinda dry and just average, really.
Le Royale ($8)
Misterchewy and I liked this! Smooth, moist layers and a crunchy praline base. Might be a little too sweet for some people.
Assortment of macarons
Sesame, Pitaschio, Brittany , $5 for 3
Chloe, Charlotte $5.60 for 2
I tried half of a sesame macaron and another half.. Oh shucks I cant remember which.. Nevermind. All the other macarons didn’t interest me much except for the sesame one. Haha I think macarons are perfect only during tea time (or high tea if you insist). It’s too sweet to eat more than two macarons in one sitting without pairing them with tea.
These were all the desserts we conquered that night! Not sure about the rest but I almost went crazy. Sugar high perhaps!
This was taken BEFORE desserts. Not high on sugar yet. LOL.
We had another one of our monthly makan sessions on a beautiful Saturday and a total of 9 hungry souls turned up! Derrick from sgfoodonfoot suggested that we try out the newly opened Penang Place Restaurant at Connexis, along Fusionopolis Way. It was previously located at International Business Park. Penang Place Restaurant’s current location is just two bus stops from Buona Vista mrt station! There’s also a shuttle bus service. Very convenient right? Say yes!
Reopened on 4 July 2011, this authentic Penang buffet features over 30 Penang favorites prepared by 6 Penang chefs. Expect the best here!
Hehehe misterchewy and missuschewy looking all smiley but actually, we were deprived of sleep! >_< We reached NUS at about 9.30am so that we could take photos with my good friend whose convocation was held that very same day. If we were to meet her after the ceremony, we would be late for lunch 🙁 Yeah but anyway, the food was worth the sacrifice 😛
Nasi Lemak with prawns, stingray, beef rendang and vegetables
Hmm I really enjoyed every mouthful of the nasi lemak. It was sheer pleasure eating the rice which was very fragrant. And how often do you get to eat nasi lemak with prawns and stingray? Now you can!
Penang Prawn Noodle
Slightly sweet and spicy with a hint of sambal belachan, the prawn noodle broth definitely packed a punch!
Penang Laksa
If you have not tried penang laksa, please be informed that it’s nothing like the usual laksa. It is spicy and sourish which really whets the appetite!
Penang Char Kway Teow and Rojak
Char Kway Teow without lard? Before you shake your head in disapproval, you gotta believe me that it tasted as good as one prepared with lard! Maybe even better! Loved the kway teow that was thin and had a springy QQ texture! A bonus was that the overall dish was less oily. As for the rojak, it was a mixture of crunchy juicy cut fruits. I still prefer my rojak with cuttlefish.
Some light bites – spring roll, lor bak, etc.
Penang Bubur Cha Cha
After all that food, it’s time for a nice sweet bowl of bubur cha cha!
Red Bean Soup
I would go for a hot bowl of red bean soup anytime!
Fried Cempedak Fritters
Ooh these are really best eaten piping hot. Jackfruit coated in batter and deep fried till it was crispy and golden brown. The sweetness lingers in your mouth and is very addictive!
DIY Chendol
Yup DIY Chendol! It sure was fun making our own bowls of chendol but mine turned out disastrous and it wasn’t sweet enough for my liking. (The one above was the best looking but wasn’t made by us.) So sad I just have to try harder but my stomach can only contain this much 🙁 Hehe.
Here’s a happy group photo after our stomachs were filled 🙂 The neon green lights had been switched off because the place was closed in preparation for dinner.
We made our way to Wessex Estate after lunch as part of a photowalk since all of us had our cameras with us. We were walking past some houses and spotted a car tyre hanging from a branch of a huge tree. At that point, I was thinking, “Hey, nice swing! Uhhhh.. Stable one or not?” And then Chewy Charles wanted to do levitation shots because he had read about it in mypaper我报.
After doing leviation and jump shots, I can’t remember who suggested planking on the car tyre swing. It was ridiculously funny. Kai got stuck but at least he could get out without us having to call Civil Defence.
This is what I call, a case of over-planking! Chewy Charles managed to squirm and squeeze his way through the tyre. Amazingly, he could maintain a nice horizontal position perpendicular to the ground. Hahaha but after a while, he began to tip headwards! Thank goodness he could balance himself pretty well and avoided falling flat on his face 😛
It’s the KTM railway track! It will be gone before you know it.. *sniff sniff* 🙁
It was really funny that Yan Cai was so eager to plank on the track but he jumped up very quickly because it was extremely hot! He tried to stay there for a few seconds because we all wanted to take a photo of him.
Maureen to Kai: “Dear Dear! Let’s take a kissing shot!”
and then points at us: “Later your turn!”
Haha it’s ok because we are also exhibitionists. LOL!
Lob Ster’s caption on fb totally made me LOL! — Zhi Hao: “啊! 狗仔!!! 别拍了! 别拍了!!!”
Hahaha! But I think we looked more amused than shocked or outraged here!
I really wanna kowtow to Lob Ster, Celes and Maureen! The track was sizzling hot but these three brave ladies plonked themselves (or rather planked) onto the track without hesitation! Too bad I was wearing a dress; I would love to plank together with them! Yeah right.
LOL it was really funny when the guys started planking on the track too when the girls started egging them on. And all three yelled “Sio ah! Sio ah!” Chewy Charles was spared because he successfully planked on the tyre. But I’d still say, well done guys! Really look like three lifeless bodies. Hahaha!

Yes. I am officially engaged 🙂 It’s not that I didn’t see this marriage proposal coming. Yeah how can I be so sure? It’s because we work backwards. Last Sept/Oct, after seeking approval from our parents, we balloted for a BTO flat 3 months into dating and was very lucky to get a nice queue number! Location is ideal and we will be staying around the 20th floor (bye to smelly garbage trucks)! Everything went very smoothly and we decided that we will tie the knot in Sept this year. Subsequently, we found a photographer for our engagement shoot and also booked a venue for our solemnization ceremony in Feb. So, apart from the wedding cake and invitation cards, we were only left with one thing — the marriage proposal! Two crucial questions: 1) WHEN is he going to propose? and 2) HOW is he going to propose?
On 25th June 2011, Chewy Charles went down on one knee and proposed to me at Once Upon A Milkshake (Maxwell outlet). Even till now, I’m extremely overwhelmed by this whole episode. The tremendous effort that he put into preparing this surprise really touched my heart. There are just some things that money cannot buy. I’m simply amazed by how willing and determined Chewy Charles was in the making of the video and of course it would not have been possible without the help of his university buddies from his fydp group. 🙂
So how did I end up at OUAM if it was meant to be a surprise? Chewy Charles roped in our fellow food blogger friends and so, a couple of days before, Maureen texted me that the rest would be going for a tasting and asked if I wanted to go. She even asked me to ask Chewy Charles to join in. I remembered him telling me that he had to collect his transcript at NTU two weeks ago. Boys and girls, open your eyes and look. This is how a fake tasting session would look like. Hahaha!
After ordering our milkshakes, Maureen took a Macbook from the OUAM staff and told us to watch the ‘media kit’ which came in the form of a video clip. Now i’m wondering how could I not have sensed anything amiss when most of them were standing behind me.
Watching the video intently.. That’s Derrick filming me! Sneaky! Haha.
I have to say that I was very surprised and also mildly amused when I saw Chewy Charles in the video 🙂
And then god knows what happened. I CRIED! It was embarrassing I tell you. Those weren’t tears of joy. I was actually crying uncontrollably. Tears kept streaming down my face. If I were alone, I swear I could have wailed out loud. That was how touched I was. Anyway, nobody offered me tissue! So sad leh. 🙁 Lol!
Haha ok after relating so much about how I felt.. Here’s the proposal video! :))
Well, I don’t know what’s with this expression. I think this was how I looked like when my heart ached for the silly boy upon thinking how much he must have gone through in the process of making this video. I once cried when he accidentally cut his thumb. I’m crazy right.
Still tearing.. Kai was keeping a lookout for Chewy Charles and his surprise party of 9. When the video was coming to an end, he gave a thumbs up sign and they marched over.
The first thing that Chewy Charles asked me was, “Aiyo! Why you cry until like that?!”
Each one of our 9 friends who formed the surprise party came in holding a heart on stick, forming the words, “PLS MARRY ME”. Chewy Charles contributed to the last letter.
Chewy Charles recited a great deal and I really cannot remember his exact words. I don’t even think I managed to digest what he had said! I was asking myself if this was all just a dream.
After Chewy Charles popped the question, I whispered, “Uhhhh what should I say?” Hahaha fail. It was his idea to pick out ‘Y’, ‘E’ and ‘S’.
This is one of the extremely rare photos of Chewy Charles smilingly so happily! Haha horrible la, there were still tears in my eyes! But anyway, both of us look really happy huh? 😀

Happily engaged and looking forward to our solemnization 😛

We sincerely want to thank our food blogger and twitter friends (Maureen, Kai, Rey, Derrick, Yan Cai, Jia Yi, Rae, Joyce, Lisa and Ellena). The ‘tasting session’ would not have been possible without them 😉 And thanks for all the amazing photos!
Chewy Charles decided to contact this particular group of my jc girl friends (Alicia, Esther, Nicolez and Joyce) because he figured that if there were any form of leakage, it would seem not as suspicious because he had not met them in person and were not friends with them on facebook. Thanks to these wonderful girl friends who acted as part of the surprise team and took time off to witness this proposal.
And of course, not forgetting this very important and supportive group of NTU friends (Kai Yang – not in picture, Sin Yee, Kelvin, Hong Ming, Cheng Wei and Joel) who without any complaints (I hope! Haha), helped Chewy Charles in directing, filming and editing the video. They braved the sun and the rain and their efforts are appreciated.

To have and to hold 🙂
We would also like to thank all our family members and friends for their well wishes and support 🙂 Lastly, we are finally blogging on our own domain! We had been toying with this idea for quite some time already and we think that this is a good time to do so. Fellow bloggers who have previously added Foodoshoot to your blog roll, please spend two minutes of your time to change it to missuschewy ok? 😉 We will be going by this name from now on! Hope everyone enjoyed this special post! The full set of photos can be found here. 🙂
It’s really amazing how social media brings people together. The food bloggers and tweeps had a rather impromptu dinner gathering at Rock & Ash recently. It all started from a casual remark on Twitter and everyone decided to join in the fun! 😀 There’s this dinner promotion going on daily from 6pm to 9pm. Order any meal to receive a free drink, soup and dessert, all for $14.90++!
There is a wide range of coffee and beverages available but the Homemade Honey Beetroot caught our attention. It tasted pretty raw upon the first sip but after some getting used to, this drink was quite refreshing with an acceptable level of sweetness. I liked the Cream of Mushroom Soup for it was thick and flavourful.
Out of the 14 burgers on the menu, I picked the Minty Yogurt Lamb Burger. Unlike most of the beef burgers that my dinner counterparts had, my lamb patty really wasn’t that salty. I liked how chunky it was but could taste neither the mint nor the yogurt. Anyway, eating burgers can be a messy affair. I had mine cut up into quarters. Hehe.
Here are some of the mains that the others had. Roast Lamb
Grilled Fish with Wasabi Sauce
Aglio Olio
Lastly, desserts to end our dinner! We had a variety of cakes. Tiramisu, chocolate, cheesecake and something else which I cant remember 😛 I liked the cheesecake one best!
Yay it’s another one of our monthly foodie outings again! This is roughly one third of the total strength (there were a total of 3 tables) that night!
From left: Rae, Yan Cai, Alvin, Lobster, Meng Ching, Angela and us! They are a very lovely and chatty bunch of people! 🙂

It was Maureen’s idea to go to JB Ah Meng for Cze Char dinner and initially, I thought that we were going to Johor Bahru! Turned out to be in Geylang…but still! Geylang leh! How exciting right?! Nice experience to be sitting and having dinner along the alley of Geylang. Kinda reminds me of my trip to Kuala Lumpur with one of my best uni friends during my undergraduate days!
First up, we had the Deep Fried Fish Skin ($13 – medium) as our appetizer. Haha at least I think it’s like an appetizer la. On its own, the fried fish skin was crispy but a little hard. It was a pity that the sweet chili sauce was not able to further enhance its taste.
We were all wondering what this was as it did not look like a typical cze char dish. Looked yummy and tasted yummy too! The gravy in the Stewed Chicken with Liang Fen ($15 – large) was quite savory and we could not resist slurping up a few mouthfuls of it. Loved the chicken which was quite tender. Oops the liang fen cannot be seen here. It’s transparent and has a jelly-like texture.
The Fried Fish Head ($18 – medium) was salty and spicy enough for my liking while others might want some plain rice to go along with this.
We were quite amused by the presentation of the J.B. San Lou Meehoon ($10 – large). It was like…yeah….just a huge plate of fried beehoon. Veggies were all hidden underneath. Even though this looked boring, the beehoon turned out to be pretty tasty and everyone went for more helpings 🙂
I was happy to see the Vegetable with Golden Mushroom ($12 – medium) as I love mushrooms and tofu! Mushrooms were juicy, while the tofu was slightly fried to crisp perfection on the outside.
I was probably frowning in disapproval when the Brinjal Potato with Chilli ($15 – large) was served because I simply don’t like green capsicum. The first thing I picked up was the sliced brinjal and it tasted so good! The batter in which it was coated in obviously made it very fragrant and delicious.
Chewy Charles and I thought that the Deep Fried Fermented Bean with Belly Pork ($12 – large) had a pretty weird taste, probably due to the fermented bean. But after a couple of slices, we got used to its taste. Good old fried pork that could have done better if it weren’t so tough.
My family and I usually go to No Signboard Seafood Restaurant for our fix of white pepper crabs so I was thrilled to know that JB Ah Meng has White Pepper Crabs ($24 – 3 pcs) too! In fact, I prefer white to black pepper crabs 😀 The ones here were not bad! I might get my parents to try one day. The crabs were very well-infused with the fiery white pepper. Finger lickin’ goooooood! 😉
I first picked out a slightly charred chip from the Lotus Root Chips with Sugar Peas ($15 – large) dish which was kinda bitter but it turned out to be an exceptional chip. The sliced lotus chips resembled unsalted potato chips! Most of the foodies from our table liked this 🙂
Whoohoo! Here comes the Salted Egg Prawn Ball ($24 – large)! I could feel the excitement around our table as everyone hurriedly snapped photos of this dish before tucking in. The funny thing was, we had to fish out the salted egg coated balls that contained prawns because there were some that were plain flour! Yeah Rae ate her first piece and commented that she didn’t taste any prawn. Haha! Chewy Charles said that it tasted like mooncake which I thought was pretty interesting!
At the end of the dinner, all of us forked out $20 each which is very reasonable for all the food that we ate! I think that most of us turned up because we were also lured by the durian feast plan! You can read more about it on Ellena’s blog 🙂 Yay! We can’t wait for the next outing! Ohh, but wait.. Stay tuned for our impromptu dinner post! 😛
Last month, our friends Maureen and Ellena organized a $10 Hawker Trail at Old Airport Road Food Centre. Were we excited? Of course we were! By each contributing a mere $10, we could sample the BEST of Old Airport Road Food Centre! Our makan kakis for the day were Derrick, Lobster and Rae! Just look at the amount of food on our table! We almost wiped everything clean! 😀
Lao Fu Zi Char Kway Teow #01-12
Opening Hours: 11am – 11.30pm
We were simply drawn by how good this plate of Char Kway Teow ($3 – $5) smelled! Upon tasting, I found that it was a little on the sweeter side. A pity that we left it to cool for too long because we were waiting for all the other dishes to arrive. Thus, the noodles and kway teow were clumped together. So remember, eat your char kway teow while it’s still hot! 😉
Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee #01-116
Opening Hours: Mon to Wed and Fri to Sun 7am – 3pm (closed on Thursdays)
The queue for Lor Mee ($3 – $6) from this stall is crazily long. I say, be patient my friend and you shall be rewarded. Rewarded with a yummy bowl of Lor Mee, that is! The consistency of the gravy is just nice, not too watery and not too thick. The noodles have a very nice chewy bite to it. We all liked the fish flakes that had been fried till its skin was a nice shade of golden brown.
Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle #01-98
Opening Hours: Tue to Fri 9am – 8pm, Sat and Sun 9am – 9pm (closed on Mondays)
My family and I always patronize this stall when the Big Prawn Noodle ($4 onwards) craving hits us! We never fail to order extra ingredients like pork ribs. The prawn broth was very sweet tasting, which makes me want to slurp everything up but while some people might find that it is not rich enough, I thought that it surpasses the standard of most places.
Xin Mei Porridge #01-91
Opening Hours: 7am – 2.30pm
There’s nothing like a simple bowl of Peanut & Cuttlefish Porridge ($2.50 onwards)! Very smooth and savory, this is my favorite among all the food that ate that day 🙂 Other varieties such as sliced fish and lean pork with century egg are also available. Every bowl of porridge comes with a freshly fried youtiao.
Western Barbeque #01-53
Opening Hours: Noon onwards (closed on Mondays)
While Chewy Charles liked the unique garlic sauce, I found it a little sweet to go with the juicy and tender Chicken Chop ($5). But if you want to try the sauce, remember to request for it when you place your order!
Blanco Court Kway Chap #01-136
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 4.30pm (closed on Mondays)
If you enjoy eating pork innards, the Kway Chap ($3.30 per serving) here is worthy of mention. Kway was silky smooth (so smooth that you are better off eating it with a spoon) and the braising of the chap was fantastic.
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun #01-155
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm
Freshy handmade Chee Cheong Fun ($2) from this stall was thin and soft. Their assorted ingredients include char siew, prawns and mushroom.
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun #01-155
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm
The same stall selling chee cheong fun also sells items like Fried Wanton and Hae Zou ($4 onwards).
Tan Beng Otah Delight #01-74
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm
Every mouthful of this fragrant Nasi Lemak ($1.80) left us wanting more. The Otah ($1.50) was also spicy enough. Other than fish, there are other choices like prawn, sotong and crab meat.
Toa Payoh Rojak #01-108
Opening Hours: 12pm – 8pm
As this stall that sells Rojak ($3 – $5) is very popular, the queue really speaks for itself. The Penang prawn paste based rojak sauce was rich and sticky. Loved the oh-so-crispy youtiao and taopok!
Wang Wang Curry Puff #01-126
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm
We were really full towards the end but still managed a few extra mouthfuls of food here and there 😛 My favorite Curry Puff ($1.20) was the one with sardine filling in it. Actually, the curry chicken and potato one was not too bad as well for it was oozing with thick gravy!
Chi Shuang Shuang #01-51
Opening Hours: Noon onwards
I was really tickled by the name of this stall. It means eat until song song or eat until very shiok ah! Apart from the usual Goreng Pisang (fried banana), there’s also Fried Jackfruit and Fried Durian ($1.60 onwards)! Yes eat song song! Needless to say, a durian lover like me couldn’t get enough of the fried durian 😉

Thanks to Maureen and Ellena for organizing this event. Everyone went home bloated and happy. It was definitely a huge success! 😀
