Bangkok for Kids: Art in Paradise Bangkok

P7310588

Heyhey chewys! We have come to the third and final post of our three-part series on things to do in Bangkok with kids! As I had mentioned earlier, there are many child-friendly attractions in Bangkok but since we were only there for a few days, we had to plan carefully to make the most of our trip! We went to Siam Ocean World on the second day of our trip, and Kidzoona & Molly Fantasy on the third, but realized that we didn’t get many family snaps which was a pity. So, on the fourth day of our trip, which also coincided with my birthday, we decided to head to Art in Paradise, the first 3D art museum in Bangkok! What better way to take interesting photos that will serve as wonderful memories many years down the road? 🙂

P7310590

Art in Paradise is located within Esplanade Shopping Mall, which is some walking distance from Thailand Cultural Centre MRT station. Silly me got it wrong and we walked all the way to Thailand Cultural Centre after we exited the station. Upon realizing that there’s no Art in Paradise there, we took a cab to Esplanade Shopping Mall. Please don’t get confused like I did! Admission for adult foreigners costs 400 baht and 200 baht for children above 100cm. All footwear are to be removed and deposited at the counter before entering the museum. There are over 150 paintings across various themes and we had so much fun posing for photos, Little misschewy included! Shall let our photos do the talking 😉

Bangkok for Kids: Bangkok Sea Life Siam Ocean World

IMG_4704

Helloooo daddies and mummies! Here’s our second of three-part series on things to do in Bangkok with kids! If you have missed our earlier post on Kidzoona and Molly Fantasy, click here to read it. You know how it’s kinda funny when misterchewy and I look back on our last trip to Bangkok in 2012.. We were trying to decide if we should visit Bangkok Sea Life Siam Ocean World while we were at Siam Paragon. After much deliberation, we both agreed to take our kid there the next time we visit Bangkok. Three years later.. HERE WE ARE! 😀

IMG_4710

Little misschewy had not been to the S.E.A Aquarium at Sentosa so we reckon this would be an eye-opening and engaging experience for her. Furthermore, she knows what a fish is so we thought it would be interesting to introduce different forms of marine life to her. The tickets are priced at 990 baht for adults and 790 baht for children 3-11 years old. We only needed to purchase a pair of adult tickets which worked out to be around SGD 80! We managed to save a bit by getting the Weekday Early Bird rate at 745 baht for adults, which is about SGD 60 for a pair. We saved $20! However, the small catch is that you have to enter before noon on a weekday! With proper planning, it wasn’t difficult at all.

P7290178

Indeed, from the moment we stepped into Siam Ocean World, Little misschewy was so enthralled by all the different types of fishes that we spent quite a fair bit of time before moving on to the next species.

P7290173

P7290208

P7290181

This Octopus is really ginormous!

P7290188

Lionfish! Reminds me of my scuba diving days. I wanna go diving again! 🙁

IMG_4713

We stepped onto a glass panel and watched various sharks swim underneath us. Pretty cool!

IMG_4721

This seems to be meant for kids and it’s sooo cute!

IMG_4727

Little misschewy was initially afraid and clung on to misterchewy tightly. But after awhile, she refused to leave! LOL.

IMG_4729

Heyyy fishie fishie!

P7290219

Now, that’s a different kind of ‘fish’! Hahaha.

P7290220

The otters were just lazing around!

P7290222

This is the part where visitors get to touch and feel marine life such as starfish and sea cucumber.

Going on board the Ocean Feeding Boat allows one to get up close and personal with sharks, stingrays and a great variety of fish. SEA LIFE staff will provide an insightful introduction while feeding the fish by hand. It costs 180 baht per person and this activity is available from 10.30am to 8pm.

As compared to our very own S.E.A Aquarium, I would say that Bangkok Sealife Siam Ocean World wins hands down in more ways than one. If you have a young toddler like us, a visit to Siam Ocean World is highly recommended! 😉

Bangkok for Kids: Kidzoona and Molly Fantasy

P7300507

When our friends knew about our plans to take Little misschewy along to Bangkok during my birthday week on the last week of July, many expressed their concern because Bangkok is popularly known as a shopping and eating paradise. Would having a young toddler in tow ruin our holiday plans? And more importantly, would Chanelle enjoy this trip or be bored to tears? Even though Chanelle is barely two years old, she sure knows how to play and have fun! With that, I planned our Bangkok itinerary with her interests in mind, in addition to ours. There are many things to do in Bangkok with kids but due to limited time, I shortlisted three main attractions in Bangkok for kids and families. I will first be introducing Kidzoona and Molly Fantasy in the first of my three-part series 🙂

P7300496

There are a number of indoor playgrounds scattered all over Bangkok but I decided on Kidzoona based on two very important factors:

1. Kidzoona is highly accessible as it is located on the 5th floor of Gateway Ekamai Mall, right next to Ekkamai BTS Station. Kidzoona allows re-entry on the same day, so parents and children can take a break at any of the cafes or restaurants within the mall. A few other indoor playgrounds that I had researched on are located away from BTS stations which can be rather inconvenient.

2. Kidzoona’s play areas and play structures are age-appropriate for young toddlers like Chanelle. I feel that some other indoor playgrounds like Funarium and KidZania, on the other hand, target older children about 4 years and up.

P7300497

Kidzoona and Molly Fantasy are two concepts under the Aeon Fantasy group, a Japan-based company which specializes in the operation of entertainment facilities for children in shopping centres. Apart from Japan and Thailand, Aeon Fantasy has also found its way around other Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia, The Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. All I want to say is.. Please come to Singapore soon!!

P7300499

Upon stepping into Molly Fantasy, we were greeted by a barrage of coin-operated kiddie rides and arcade games. Little misschewy loves to go on kiddie rides these days, but ain’t nobody got time for that! Besides the kiddie rides and arcade games, Molly Fantasy houses a large play area, Kidzoona, which is what we were there for. First, we had to fill in a form and pay upfront before entering Kidzoona. Adults pay a flat rate of 90 baht but the rates for children differ based on their height and are pricier on weekends.

P7300483

The green lockers are for you to store your personal belongings and valuables while the white lockers are meant for footwear. We were unlucky that the green lockers were unavailable so we had to constantly keep an eye on our bags.

P7300476

There are educational toys and books for the little ones. Saw a baby boy hammering away at a wooden xylophone. Super cute! It’s a great place for young ones to get warmed up before proceeding to the giant ball pool.

P7300481

P7300475

Lounge area where tired parents can take turns to rest and recharge. There’s even a massage chair to sooth those aching feet!

P7300400

This inflatable giant ‘hamster wheel’ is so cool!

P7300480

P7300408

One of the reasons why I enjoy taking Chanelle to the indoor playground is because she likes watching other children play and it brings a smile to her face.

P7300410

P7300433

Hahaha. The look on Little misschewy is like, “Mummy, can I play now?” We have not been to many indoor playgrounds in Singapore but the ball pool at Kidzoona is hugeeeee and attracts children of all ages!

P7300473

P7300417

P7300413

P7300421

P7300428

P7300479

Inflatable bouncy castle!

P7300434

Chanelle tried to climb up but it proved to be too steep!

P7300440

Papa Chewy to the rescue!

P7300436

WHEEEE! Chanelle asked to go on the slide at least another three more times! Good workout for Papa Chewy! Hahaha.

P7300478

This section of Kidzoona is quite similar to KidZania, where children are free to experiment and take on various roles in the ‘working field’. It was adorable watching how kids served their parents who acted as customers or patrons.

P7300464

P7300465

P7300461

P7300444

Of course, we couldn’t resist a photo of Little misschewy in one of these cute outfits! Her first part-time job at a burger shop! HAHAHA.

P7300446

“Hello! Burgers for you?” I whatsapped this photo to Chanelle’s godma, and she replied that she will BUY ALL THE BURGERS from Chanelle! So sweet can! LOL.

P7300449

Ooh! Look who’s a sushi chef? Irrashaimase!

P7300458

P7300455

Mummy is going to post a photo of this sushi platter on Instagram while my personal sushi chef prepares some hot green tea for me!

P7300466

The hubs and I are glad that the local children we met at Kidzoona are either well-mannered, or their parents are quick to intervene before things turn ugly between kids. Chanelle happened to pick up a toy which was left behind by a little boy and he took it back right out of her hands but his father immediately handed it back to Chanelle before pulling his boy away. This lovely girl didn’t push Chanelle out of the fire truck when Chanelle climbed in. In fact, she shifted herself to make more space for Chanelle. Her kind gesture truly surprised me because I have come across selfish kids who refuse to share.

P7300472

It was a joy watching the two girls smile and interact with each other and they occasionally waved at misterchewy and I!

P7300469

P7300491

We spent close to 2 hours in Kidzoona and paid another 40 baht for Little misschewy to go on this carousel ride before leaving Gateway Ekamai Mall. Besides keeping the little ones happy, it’s also a fantastic way to expend their energy so that parents can have a peaceful meal when their kids conk out after a few hours at the indoor playground 😉

Introduction to Sparkanauts Plus Trial Passes Giveaway!

Sponsored Review

P7120202

Earlier last month, we started Little misschewy on lessons at Sparkanauts. It was never our intention to send her to such classes as we believe that all children develop at their own pace; it doesn’t matter if they start walking at 10 months or are still crawling at 15 months. When they are ready to walk, they WILL walk. Little misschewy started to take her first few independent steps when she was around 15 months but most of the time, she had a strong preference to crawl. Honestly, it was kinda amusing to see a toddler crawl on all fours but we didn’t have an issue with that. We soon realized that the problem lies with Chanelle not being confident enough to walk without any forms of support and therefore, she chose not to walk but would crawl instead. I’m very thankful that Mama Liz introduced us to Steven from Sparkanauts as misterchewy and I were clueless about how we could instill confidence in Little misschewy and get her to walk independently without resorting to having to crawling.

P7120204

Sparkanauts aims to give each child an intellectual, physical and social edge in life and learning through specially design programmes that combine fun activities and research-backed teaching methods. Children learn best through play and this is exactly what Sparkanauts promote – holistic development through play. Steven proposed that Little misschewy attend the Cadet class which is targetted at toddlers between 12 months to 18 months of age. Every activity that we went through in class is designed to stimulate our child’s brains, while refining their physical abilities to move ahead. After attending a handful of sessions at Sparkanauts, I like how structured and well-organized the classes are. Chanelle is always fully engaged during the sessions which are 75 minutes long, inclusive of a 10-minute sharing session at the end of the class.

P7120206

Kids like routine and it’s comforting to see that Chanelle is able to adapt well to the classes conducted and led by Teacher Rachel, assisted by Teacher Beatrice. Each week, we start off with a boisterous welcome song and a round of flash cards to get warmed up.

P7120208

P7120212

Chanelle is being introduced a different theme each week. So far, she had been exposed to Meal Time, Shower, My Neighborhood, Swimming and Playground. Kids get to learn about things that are related to a particular theme. In the case of “Shower” for instance, Chanelle had been presented with flash cards with words and pictures of bath tub, shampoo, diaper, towel, powder, etc.

P7120213

There is never a dull moment at Sparkanauts!

P7120218

P7120224

P7120230

Circuit

During the circuit trainings, Chanelle got to walk up and down the ramps, climb up and down small steps, balance on the beam and crawl through tunnels. It is definitely a great and fun way to sharpen her balance and locomotor skills!

P7120253-horz

Fine motor skills are also being worked on during each class.

Trapeze

Chanelle’s favorite activity at Sparkanauts! Trapeze time!

P7120267

P7120271

P7120274

Interesting use of puppets to teach Chanelle how to jump left, right, up and down.

P7120278

Gym Ball

P7120289

For this relay activity, Chanelle had to pick up a piece of plastic fruit or vegetable one at a time, and walk to the other end to deposit it into another container.

P7120292

P7120296

This activity targets various areas of development such as hand-eye coordination, walking and balancing with a toy in one hand, bending down and getting up.

P7120300

The items in the Mystery Box differs each week.

P7120302

P7120303

During this particular session, Chanelle was tasked to pinch some plasticine and place the pieces on each tooth. Afterwards, she had to brush them off using a toothbrush. We didn’t manage to complete this activity as Chanelle was uncomfortable with the texture of plasticine and kept avoiding it when we waved the ball of plasticine in front of her. Teacher Rachel noticed that Chanelle is only comfortable with handling smooth surfaces but when it came to sticky or rough surfaces, she would cringe and turn away. Therefore, we had to expose her to more textures!

P7120317

Our term with Sparkanauts has not ended yet but misterchewy and I have started to see great improvements in Chanelle especially with regards to her physical development. If you are keen to experience what Sparkanauts has to offer, do take part in our giveaway contest! Sparkanauts is offering FREE trial sessions worth $58 each to two readers of missuschewy’s blog!

Father’s Day 2015

IMG_4010

Here’s sharing how we celebrated Father’s Day this year! 16 months on, I must say that misterchewy has been performing quite well as a hands-on father and he has more or less achieved all his KPIs. Hahaha. Chanelle is as attached to her dad as she is to me, or maybe she favors me a little more but I think she’s still quite fair when it comes to expressing her affection for the both of us. If she feeds me some of her snacks, she will feed her dad too. And when she kisses me on the mouth, she makes sure that misterchewy doesn’t get left out.

IMG_4009

I’m really happy to see both father and daughter sharing a strong relationship. Little misschewy is always calling out, “Papa! Papa!” even when the hubs isn’t home from work yet. It’s such a joy watching her eyes light up when misterchewy appears at the door step.

P6200007-001

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, we were invited for a staycation at Hotel Kai and we left Chanelle with my parents. I planned the entire day’s programme which was a pretty simple and chillax one. First, we went to Manzoku for lunch!

P6200011-001

P6200005

Must Instagram before eating! Haha.

P6200015

The Chirashi ($25++) comes with miso soup and two slices of watermelon. I guess Manzoku should be quite well known by now for its thickly sliced sashimi, which nobody should be complaining about! Every mouthful was so satisfying!

P6200104

We returned to our hotel room to relax because we were feeling lazy lol. About one to two weeks ago, I made dinner reservations at Cook and Brew at The Westin because I’m a SPG member and I wanted to take the opportunity to earn double Starpoints (got ulterior motive lol). Also, Cook and Brew is located on the 33rd floor, so the view of Marina Bay had to be good!

P6200106

P6200103

P6200105

A32A6677

Kicking off our Father’s Day dinner celebration off with a pint of Erdinger each!

A32A6688

Sweet Potato Fries ($6)

A32A6695

Black Cod ($34)

P6200120

A32A6699

The Chicken Farm ($27)

P6200114

All in all, the food was very much overpriced and taste was mediocre. Would probably recommend Cook and Brew as a place to chill out with friends over some bar bites and a glass of beer or two.

A32A6703

The view was lovely though and we managed to catch a glimpse of the NDP rehearsal sans the fireworks.

P6200135

We decided to do desserts elsewhere and headed to Snowy Village, which is relatively near the hotel we stayed. I had always wanted to check this place out because the dessert shop is housed inside a metal container! How cool is that?

P6200134

P6200127

Having tried only the Injeolmi Bingsu at Bing Go Jung, I wanted to introduce misterchewy to this supposedly fantastic Korean dessrert but the Injeolmi Bingsu at Snowy Village was kinda crappy and left me feeling disappointed.

P6200130

The presentation of the bingsu was adorable though!

P6200125

Pouring in condensed milk to make the bingsu sweeter.

P6200132

P6210013

The next day was Father’s Day and we celebrated the occasion with both families at a seafood restaurant at The Grandstand. Stay connected with us on Facebook.com/missuschewy and Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

The Chewys’ Tips for Flying with Family

_MG_6557

You may have noticed that we’re a family that likes to travel. We’re lucky to have visited such amazing places like Taiwan and Hong Kong and hope to visit many more soon. After we did our first overseas family photoshoot in Phuket earlier this year, we learned a lot about how to make traveling and flying with the family much easier.

_MG_5073

For us, half the fun of traveling comes with the amazing luxury hotels we get to stay at. Sometimes, we even enjoy our hotel staycations as much as our actual vacations. When planning for a trip to London, it’s hard to beat a family-owned hotel like the Athenaeum. We found this gem on British Airways’ flights to London page where the hotel got five stars from the airline. And by booking our rooms and our flight together, we’re able to stay in the kind of place we’ve always wanted. With an award-winning tea room, spa and hair salon all in the middle of Piccadilly, it was just what we were looking for in London. Also, booking rooms in advance when traveling with family is one of the big tips we picked up. You can get the family settled and comfortable the moment you arrive instead of scrambling to find yourselves a place to stay!

IMG_9329

Also, when you are traveling with children it’s important to take things slow and accept that you may not always be able to hit everything that you have on your schedule. That’s just one of the many pieces of sage advice we found on The Guardian’s 50 top tips for traveling with kids. That’s one of the reasons why finding a great hotel is so important for a great holiday. If the weather turns bad or a child gets sick, at least you can still try your best to relax and enjoy the rest of your vacation from a comfortable room!

photo 2
There’s so much to do and prepare and passports are only the beginning! It is also very important to know your terminal and the airport well before you show up for your flight. Some airports, like Heathrow, are so big and busy you could easily miss your flight trying to find the right gate. You should make yourself familiar with the layout ahead of time, especially if you’re also keeping track of little ones. It could take you almost an hour just to get from one terminal to another, so plan accordingly.

It’s also very helpful to try your best to pack light and pack smart. We like to prioritize items we may need for the kids like games, snacks and books for our carryon bags while putting bigger things like clothing and shoes in our actual luggage.

IMG_9221

Our flight to Phuket was very lucky as Chanelle was well behaved, but we know we won’t always be so fortunate. We were unable to get bassinet seats for that flight, but you can bet we won’t be going without them for our next one. Bassinet seats are one of the Telegraph’s top ten secrets to stress free travel and clip into the rear of the airplane’s bulkhead seats. This helps to save your lap and the backs of your fellow travelers hours of potential kicks and screams. It also gives us a little extra legroom, which is always nice.

BA_in_Flight_uschewy

We already can’t wait to go on our next vacation as a family and are glad that we were able to have the chance to give Little misschewy a trial run on her first overseas flight. It’s safe to say we’re excited to go even further for our next Chewy adventure!

Happy Willow Indoor Playground

P6050182

Hello chewys! I thought I’d share our experience after our recent trip to Happy Willow, an indoor playground at One KM Mall! There is also another Happy Willow at One North la but this is more convenient for us and the one at One KM is relatively newer since it was opened in December last year. I actually purchased a Groupon deal at about $8 quite some time ago and later found out that we didn’t save much because the admission fee for kids below 2 years of age is only $10 -_- Anyway it was expiring in one week so misterchewy and I took half day leave on a Friday. The voucher was valid on weekends too but we figured it might be crowded. The hubs and I went on a lunch date in Orchard to satisfy my chirashi craving before picking Little misschewy up from home. This is the very first photo of Chanelle that I caught on camera at Happy Willow! As you can see, her happy expression is priceless 🙂 Best $8 spent! Haha!

P6050185

I took into consideration that she would be crawling around for quite a bit so I dressed her in a casual Nike romper gifted by her Godma, Mag. Love the bright orange color and see how well it goes with the plastic balls from the ball pit? LOL.

P6050190-001

When the hubs carried her into the ball pit, she was a bit hesitant initially but was quick to break into a huge smile. Chanelle was so excited!

P6050191-001

P6050192-001

Yeah she chuckled until her saliva came out. HAHAHA. -_-

P6050194

P6050282

At the Toddler’s Turf, there is quite a bit of space for kids between the ages of 9 months to less than 3 years old to roam about. Great for little tots like Chanelle who was still learning how to walk!

P6050283

Vroom! Vroom!

P6050316

P6050203

I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BALL~~

P6050212

Mini rock wall!

P6050287

The Kids’ Den is recommended for children 2 years old and above but we went ahead anyway! I personally think it’s alright as long as kids are under close supervision by their parents.

P6050214

Don’t know what this is called but Chanelle was happily ‘galloping’ away!

P6050217

P6050224

P6050249

P6050227

Basically, Little misschewy was being carried around by misterchewy because there were some steps to climb before they could get to the top of the slide!

P6050229

P6050254

P6050261

P6050256

I see two kiddos in this photo. Hahaha.

P6050263

P6050264

Plenty of stuff to keep Little misschewy entertained!

P6050274

There is this mini trampoline area but of course, Chanelle is too young to know that she’s supposed to hop around in there.

P6050276

P6050278

There are also some puzzles and games.

P6050280

P6050288

We decided that Chanelle had enough of crawling around and brought her back to the Toddler’s Turf, but a different section this time.

P6050290

P6050294

My cousins bought a cooking set for Chanelle’s first birthday. I think she’s ready!

P6050302

P6050304

P6050289

Private rooms are also available to hold your parties. Happy Willow also offers a range of party items and services such as photography, balloon sculpting, souvenir pack, photo booth, etc.

P6050201

For a mere $10 on weekdays for unlimited play for children under 2 years old, we reckon it’s really reasonable and affordable. There’s a little cafe within Happy Willow so kids and adults can take a pit stop, or if you prefer to venture outside for your meals, Happy Willow allows re-entry. Little misschewy sure had a great time at Happy Willow and we will be back really soon! 😉

My Breastfeeding Journey

BF5

Little misschewy turns 15 months old today and this marks a significant milestone in my breastfeeding journey. As I begin typing this post, I’m overwhelmed with a multitude of emotions. I have always wanted to blog about the difficulties that I had faced, especially during the initial stages of my breastfeeding journey and how I managed to overcome them but I didn’t know where to begin because there’s just too much that I wish to share. This journey is not a smooth sailing one and is fraught with heartaches but I’m rejoicing the fact that somehow, I have managed to come this far. To begin with, I wasn’t properly educated about breastfeeding as I didn’t come from a pro-breastfeeding family. Even before I gave birth, my mum briefly mentioned on a few occasions that there’s no point in breastfeeding for more than a month and told me to introduce formula milk. I clearly remembered those words, “Breastfeed one month enough already. After that can give formula milk.” When I told my mum about my plans to get a Medela breast pump at the Baby Fair, she replied, “Aiya how you know you will have milk? If no milk then you waste money buying breast pump for what.” With that, I didn’t bother to read up and find out more about breastfeeding. It was a HUGE mistake. A mistake so huge that my breastfeeding journey got off to an extremely rocky start.

BF6

I still remember vividly, on the very same night a few hours after I delivered at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, the nurse handed Little misschewy to me when I was resting in my ward and taught me how to position baby to ensure a proper latch on. It was probably around midnight and the room was dimly lit and quiet. Once Little misschewy started suckling, the nurse left the room and it was just the two of us. That magical moment brought tears to my eyes. The very act of nursing my baby was such an amazing experience and I knew that this would be the start of a strong bond between the two of us. Unfortunately, my milk supply had not kicked in and I was immensely pressurized by my parents and relatives to give formula milk to Little misschewy because she was crying when they visited me in the day. I was very sad and broke down after they left. The hubs consoled me and told me not to give myself too much stress over breastfeeding and to just try my best. He would respect my decision whatever it was. As I wasn’t armed with sufficient knowledge about breastfeeding, I wasn’t aware that I had to keep nursing or keep pumping to stimulate milk supply. In other words, Chanelle was being given only formula milk for the first five days until my milk supply finally came. I will never forget that night when my boobs turned ROCK HARD. I was clenching my teeth in pain while massaging my boobs with a warm towel. I thought I was going to die! Also, I could only resort to pumping using the Medela Mini Electric that misterchewy’s teacher very kindly loaned me as the few nursing sessions in the hospital left me with very sore and chaffed nipples that made it impossible to continue nursing.

BF2

I reckon the mini electric pump isn’t good enough for some serious hardcore milk-expressing. It didn’t do a good job at emptying my boobs completely, and coupled with the fact that I was pumping only every 4 hours instead of 2 or 3, I suffered from my very first case of Mastitis during my confinement. It was in the wee hours of the night when I developed a fever that made me feel weak all over and I was shivering like crazy. My fever broke by the time I woke up the next morning but I wasn’t so fortunate the next few times I had Mastitis. A total of 4 times in less than 2 months in fact! The symptoms of Mastitis are unmistakable – immense pain in the breast (always the right side for me), accompanied by swelling, warmth and redness. You might also have fever and chills. Little misschewy was unable to clear the blocked ducts in my right breast and I had to rely on antibiotics administered by my family GP. Each time, I suffered from Mastitis, my milk supply suffered miserably as well. My mum and mil advised me to stop breastfeeding because they didn’t want to see me in so much pain. I was very tempted to give up too but the hubs encouraged me to persevere. At that point, I was really angry at him because I felt that all the pain that I went through meant nothing to him but at the same time, a part of me wanted to give myself another chance at breastfeeding. As I look back today, I’m really glad that I didn’t give up.

BF3

I learned that establishing milk supply is all about “demand and supply”. However, my supply was pretty pathetic after all the mastitis cases and I was very demoralized. After my confinement nanny left, I decided to give nursing another go and I’m really blessed with a baby who can still remember how to latch on after a whole month of being bottle fed! I have read about nipple confusion which typically occurs when young babies are being given the bottle. I tried to nurse her whenever I can, while supplementing with formula milk as my mil would always suggest that Chanelle was probably still hungry whenever she started crying. I also got very irritated with my mum when she kept asking me to feed Little misschewy with formula milk instead of nursing her. It was an emotional roller coaster ride for me for the first two to three months. I broke down many times whenever Little misschewy wailed at the top of her lungs and I blamed myself for my low supply. I tried all sorts of milk boosters in the form of supplements like Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle, and also ate salmon sashimi and drank hot milo. There was an increase in my pump output but it wasn’t significant enough for me to stop supplementing Chanelle’s diet with formula milk. I went back to work after taking 12 weeks of maternity leave as promised to my boss even though my milk supply wasn’t established. It was indeed very tough for me because I had to juggle my work while making sure I had time to pump. I would also plan my pump schedule around my meetings. Or was it the other way round? Haha. I was so obsessed with my pumping routine that 2 o’clock sharp meant 2 o’clock sharp. There was no stopping me even if it meant having to go for earlier lunch without my colleagues. It was all about discipline and my baby will always be my first priority.

BF4

I really want to thank a mummy acquaintance who added me to a breastfeeding support group on Facebook. I’m guessing that she is probably another strong advocate of breastfeeding and I’m grateful to her because I have learned so much from the group. Whenever I had any doubts or questions, fellow mummies were ever ready to dish out advice and relate their personal experiences. If it wasn’t for this group, I don’t think I would be sane enough to keep setting myself new breastfeeding targets, from one month to 6 months, to 12 months and now I’m still breastfeeding at 15 months and counting! The mummies literally cry over spilled milk together and pat one another on the back when we break a new record in our pump output. When I became more experienced, I started to share my success stories when I managed to transport frozen breast milk back from our Taiwan trip, when I finally found the courage to nurse in public when Little misschewy was 9 months old, and when my hard work and sheer determination paid off which allowed me to go on the total breastfeeding route (meaning I didn’t have to supplement formula milk), albeit only for a few months. My mantra is “Got milk better than no milk“. Right now I’m paying it forward by adding my pregnant friends to this group because I want them to be well-prepared for successful breastfeeding.

Be firm if you really want to breastfeed for as long as possible. There will surely be obstacles in the initial stage but once you overcome them, things will become easier. My mum also stopped trying to dissuade me from breastfeeding. I guess she got tired asking me the same old question, “When are you going to stop breastfeeding?” every weekend when she sees me. LOL. The hubs is still as supportive as ever. When Little misschewy cries at night, he’s also the first to hand her to me, “Quick! Quick! She wants to latch!” before rolling over and snoring away. Currently, I pump once a day on average and continue latching Little misschewy to sleep. When friends and colleagues learn that I’m still breastfeeding, they often give me this look of disbelief, “Wah! Until now still got milk meh?” The answer is YES if you keep pumping or latching. Some people suggest that Little misschewy be given formula milk as her last feed before she turns in so that she can sleep through the night. I know it sounds crazy but I’m more than happy when she wakes up crying in the middle of the night, shouting “NEN NEN!” wanting to latch because she’s hungry or because she had a bad dream. I love hugging her close to me and tucking her fine hair behind her left ear. I love it when she giggles uncontrollably when I stroke her cheeks as I nurse her. I’m very amused when she cries as though it’s the end of the world after I declare, “Nen nen no more!” while keeping a straight face. My current goal is to breastfeed Little misschewy until she self-weans. A year ago, I collected some of my milk in a breastmilk storage bag and sent it to a breast milk keepsake creator in the United Kingdom. I decided on a pair of hand prints made using my milk for a charm bead inscribed with Little misschewy’s name, which is Pandora compatible and a pendant with a pair of foot prints as a gift for Little misschewy in future when she is old enough to understand and appreciate what I have done for her.

Happy 15 months, Chanelle. You taught me that a mother’s love knows no bounds.

The Chewys’ Family Trip to Hong Kong Day 4

DSCF6630

The Chewys went for an outdoor photoshoot early in the morning on the 4th day of our Hong Kong trip. Will be sharing some of the photos in another post!

DSCF6727

After the shoot, we were kinda tired and headed back to Hotel Jen to freshen up. We took a short break in our room before going for lunch at Café Malacca, courtesy of the hotel. Café Malacca has been named a Bib Gourmand restaurant in the MICHELIN Guide 2014 & 2015. The wide variety of dishes offered are from Malaysia and Singapore; just what we needed after days of feasting on Hong Kong cuisine!

DSCF6633

We browsed through the menu and in no time, decided on the dishes we wanted to try because we were kinda craving for them! We had some Otak Otak which was spicy and delicious enough to whet our appetite for the other dishes to come!

DSCF6634

These sticks of Satay smelled so good! We had the chicken and mutton ones which were tender on the inside and tasted mildly sweet.

DSCF6639

I like my Hokkien Mee to be slightly wet with gravy. What about you? The stock was well-flavored which was nicely soaked up by the slim noodles. It would be great if the hokkien noodles had some charred bits for that wok hei flavor!

DSCF6642

We were starting to feel a little full but the delicious tangy taste of the Assam Laksa kept us going! The gravy was a little on the watery side but was flavorful nevertheless. We also found generous chunks of fish in it!

DSCF6679

After a heavy lunch, we made our way to Wong Tai Sin Temple. Dedicated to the Great Immortal Wong, Wong Tai Sin Temple is a popular major tourist attraction in Hong Kong.

DSCF6659

Whenever we travel abroad, we try our best to visit the temples there to pay our respects and to offer our prayers.

DSCF6662

DSCF6678

The weather was scorching hot and Chanelle started to protest because she was wrapped up in the carrier 🙁

DSCF6654

We didn’t have any other plans after our visit to Wong Tai Sin Temple, so we decided to travel to Prince Edward area for dim sum.

DSCF6692

One Dim Sum is a One Michelin Star dim sum eatery which is affordable and opens till late.

We were very impressed by the food offered during evening cocktail hour! We were not that hungry but we couldn’t stop eating. LOL! Loved the smoked salmon, potato salad and curry fish balls!

DSCF6697

Best of all.. Free flow beer! Whoohoo!

DSCF6698

DSCF6705

I stayed in our room with Chanelle while the hubs went to hunt for my Cookies & Cream Vitasoy and also bought back some dinner since we were going to stay up till late to pack our luggages. Confirm will be hungry! Hahaha.

DSCF6716

DSCF6720

Yay! Mak’s Noodles for dinner! It converts to about SGD$7 which is pretty expensive for such a small bowl. Popularly known as best wanton noodles in Hong Kong, we found that it didn’t live up to the hype. The soup was quite tasty though!

DSCF6724

Swaddled Little misschewy like a newborn after her shower the next morning. Hahaha.

DSCF6729

For the past few days, we had been heading out for breakfast so we decided to try the breakfast at Hotel Jen on our last day in Hong Kong. The breakfast spread at the Club Lounge certainly looked very appetizing!

The Chewys’ Family Trip to Hong Kong Day Three

DSCF6521

As opposed to Australian Dairy Company which had been featured in my previous post, I was quite keen to try Capital Cafe at Wan Chai! This place also seems very popular and has garnered more positive reviews online.

DSCF6520

We arrived pretty early and got a table almost immediately.

DSCF6515

DSCF6517

DSCF6510

Scrambled eggs with black truffle! It was a pretty generous amount of black truffle shavings and the scrambled eggs were very creamy! It’s seriously damn good la.

DSCF6511

We also ordered the Condensed Milk Bun which was very sweet but we like!

DSCF6536

Next up we went for dim sum at two Michelin star Sun Tung Lok at Miramar Shopping Centre. We were not that hungry so we only ordered a few dishes to share.

DSCF6533

DSCF6541

DSCF6544

DSCF6555

Spent some time shopping at Harbour City! Seriously all the super atas brands are there!

DSCF6560

DSCF6552

At Toys R Us!

DSCF6562

Afternoon tea at Intercontinental Hong Kong! They don’t accept reservations but we managed to get a table. Be there extra early if you want a table that gives you unobstructed view of the harbour! It’s really lovely! This is the Afternoon Tea Set for Two that we had. About SGD$130 to $140. We don’t usually spend money like this back in Singapore but since we are travelling, must enjoy right!

DSCF6624

We wanted to try Star Cafe and thanks to the help we found online, all we had to do was to look out for this neon signboard that says Dadol Hotel.

DSCF6622

Walk straight ahead and take the stairs down.

DSCF6621

DSCF6613

DSCF6619

I tried the Tomato noodles with pork chop. The tomato gravy was a bit watered down but the taste was still quite robust. This proved to be quite a comforting bowl nevertheless! Highly recommended!
