With a Pinch of Salt: Step in and smile! :D

Towards the end of every month, Chewy Charles and I would get all excited when it comes to deciding where we should celebrate our mini milestones achievement. Originally, we had about three to four places in mind and after much consideration, we settled for this cutesy and colorful cafe! ๐Ÿ™‚

We were both very excited, so much so that we completely forgot about making reservations -__-”’ Having to travel to the east took up a fair bit of time and upon reaching With A Pinch Of Salt, we were dumbfounded that there was a private function going on. Luckily for us, we only had to wait for about ten minutes before the cafe was open for business.

We were first given a menu without photos, just words. It’s the exact same menu that is available on their website. After 3 minutes of browsing, one of the staff slipped us a folder full of photos of their dishes. Hahaha. Believe me, it made a huge difference in whetting our appetites. Nice.

It might not look like much but it was quite a big spread and we just couldn’t wait to tuck in! Nom! Nom! Nom! ๐Ÿ˜€

I really wanted to try the Porky Goes Banana but Chewy Charles didn’t quite take to the idea of eating chopped up bananas with bacon. We had the Cheesy Fries ($6.90) instead. Hoo boy, the plate of crispy golden fries with melted cheese was just huge. I grew up having KFC’s cheese fries. Well, in a way. Right here at With a Pinch of Salt, I love how the specks of chilli added a slightly spicy touch to the fries ๐Ÿ™‚

The boy simply loves his fried food and was very tempted by what In the Farm Yard ($14.90) had to offer. I reckon that the assortment of crispy chicken wings, chipolatas, nuggets, onion rings and wedges would be good for sharing among three people or more. Chewy Charles claimed that the wings were actually quite good.

Honestly, I had a very tough time deciding what to order. I just wanted to try everything on the menu. Haha! ๐Ÿ˜› I finally settled for Mdm Chicken Roulade ($10.90) considering that it is a somewhat healthier choice than fried food. The chicken thigh was rolled around and stuffed with shiitake mushrooms. Do you have any idea how much I love mushrooms? Shiitake, enoki and portobello are my favorites! The chicken was marinated with herbs and spices and drenched with delicious mushroom sauce. On the overall, Mdm Chicken Roulade was quite tender and juicy, but it was also a little dry and tough on the outside. However, I didn’t regret my choice! ๐Ÿ™‚

We shared the Creme Caramel ($2.90) which was dirt cheap. Haha. It was actually quite small and did not look like much but it was totally awesome! One of the best I have ever had! This was further confirmed by Chewy Charles’ trademark “WOW!” after his first mouthful. The custard base was quite rich. Although we were quite full, finishing this up was no mean feat.

I guess With a Pinch of Salt wants its patrons to take this cafe with a pinch of salt. Psst.. We like to color coordinate! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Orange Lantern: Worth a visit, that’s pho sure!

IMG_4744com

The thought of trying out Vietnamese cuisine has never once crossed my mind. In fact, I wasn’t even interested because I would usually stick to what I’m familiar with. I guess I couldn’t resist it after reading about all the good eats that Harris from *The Simplest Aphrodisiac has been blogging about during his trip to Vietnam. Coincidentally, my cousin texted me and asked me if I knew places around Singapore which serve a good bowl of pho. That was when I told Chewy Charles that we should ummmm.. go and eat something different, for a change! And we went to The Orange Lantern ๐Ÿ˜€

I have a thing for the Rice Paper Roll with Chicken ($6.50) because of its thin and crunchy texture. Under the layer of rice paper is a layer of cabbage and under the layer of cabbage are chunks of chicken, bean sprouts and rice noodles. The pungent taste of bean sprouts might be a little too overwhelming for some, so dip it into the accompanying sauce!

The Shrimp Paste On Sugarcane ($7.50) sounded interesting enough and we almost ordered another plate after wiping everything clean. The sugarcane certainly sweetened the plump, hot and mashy shrimp paste. You can even chew on the sugarcane stick for a sweeter surprise! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Frankly speaking, I don’t think I would be able to forgive myself if I came and left without trying the pho. We both had the Special Chicken Noodle Soup ($11.90). I reckon it looks exactly like an ordinary bowl of chicken kway teow soup. However, the fact that the noodle was smoother and silkier was definitely impossible to miss. The chicken broth was sweet tasting and it was on the overall, a very light and healthy dish!

The food over at The Orange Lantern is pretty affordable so it’s good if you can gather a group of friends and sample many different Vietnamese dishes! ๐Ÿ™‚
