Japanese Cold Soba with Ribena Cordial Recipe!

My mum used to be very strict about what goes into our mouths when we were younger. She would either scrutinise food labels or rely on her own judgement based on maternal instincts to determine if a particular food or drink could be included in her approved food list for children. Ribena is made with 100% Blackcurrants from New Zealand and is rich in Vitamin C, with no artificial flavouring, sweetner nor colouring. My mum felt so reassured by the benefits of Ribena that she gave us Ribena to drink on a regular basis and it soon became something that we would look forward to after school every day, especially when the weather was scorching hot!

Every now and then, she would request for a cup or packet of Ribena and we have absolutely no qualms about giving it to her after her meals. This dish is fuss-free and very easy to execute, even for a noob cook like me. Basically, you only need to boil everything! How you want your noodles to taste depends on the sauce or dressing! I usually alternate between a savoury soba noodle dipping sauce and a fragrant roasted sesame dressing. This time, I wanted something light and refreshing! Ribena Cordial came into the picture and the result was fantabulous!

Ingredients:

Buckwheat soba noodles
Shimeji mushrooms
Honey tomatoes
Japanese cucumber
Frozen Edamame soybeans
Dried Seaweed strips
Large bowl of ice
Lemon
Ribena Cordial

1. Boil buckwheat soba noodles at medium high to high heat for about 10 minutes.

2. Have a large bowl of ice on standby and immediately transfer the boiled noodles over. This is to prevent the noodles from being slimy and sticky, and is also a great way to chill the noodles quickly. You may also pop the entire bowl of noodles and ice into the refrigerator.

3. Boil Shimeji mushrooms and Edamame soybeans at high heat for about 5 to 8 minutes.

4. Drain away the boiled water. Leave Shimeji mushrooms and Edamame soybeans to cool.

5. Combine chilled noodles, mushrooms, edamame, cucumbers and tomatoes in a bowl.

6. Squeeze half a lemon into the bowl.

7. Pour in two tablespoons of Ribena Cordial.

8. Stir noodles and ingredients well.

9. Garnish with dried Seaweed strips and serve!

This plate of Japanese cold soba noodles turned out exactly the way I wanted it to be! It tasted light, tangy and a little sweet, which is definitely a perfect refreshing meal on a hot day! Bonus? I was impressed by this embroidery machine. It is very high tech and Chanelle’s towels were all embroidered at lightning speed! I would say it took only about 10 minutes per towel!

Celevenus Aesthetic and Wellness Clinic

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and while I do consider myself rather lucky for being married to a man who firmly believes he snagged a beautiful wife, I think he needs to get his eyes checked. Hahaha jokes aside, I was never confident about my appearance. Even though I had lost some weight after my pregnancy, I still look plump because of my perpetually round face. This photo was taken during our Phuket trip in January 2015. This was my face at its roundest! :O

Apart from my round face, I really dislike how flat my nose was. My nose bridge is totally non-existent! The hubs used to tease me endlessly about my ‘cute’ nose and about how funny my side profile looked because I don’t have a nose bridge.

Many a time I found myself contemplating going under the knife to enhance my nose but I just didn’t have the guts to do so. I sounded my parents and misterchewy out by casually lamenting about my flat nose and how a nose job would solve my problem, only to have poor Michael Jackson dragged into the picture. Lol.

Like WHOA. Suddenly my nose is as sharp as misterchewy’s! No teasing from him anymore! I didn’t go for any plastic surgery but chose to undergo an aesthetic procedure that is extremely safe and non-invasive!

I visited Celevenus Wellness & Aesthetic Clinic sometime around end May last year. Celevenus is Singapore’s premier aesthetic clinic which offers an extensive range of the latest cosmetic technologies and professional treatments, targeting various parts of the body such as face, neck, eye, hair and scalp.

During my first visit, I had a thorough consultation with Dr Dylan Chau, one of the leaders in his field and also a Sculptra trainer for doctors. Needless to say, the first thing Dr Chau pointed out was my nose. He then went on to discuss about working on my other imperfections like round lower face contour, square jaw, and hollow tear troughs. Sounds like a plan!

My first session took place about two weeks after my consultation with Dr Chau and I was nervous as I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, yet excited about the prospect of finally having a nose bridge. Dr Chau shared with me that PDO (polydioxanone) Thread Lifting is an effective facial augmenting and skin tightening procedure that has been very popular in Korea due to its safe, fast and effective results. When the PDO threads are inserted into the skin, they act as a structure in supporting, shaping and lifting the face. At the same time, the threads will also stimulate skin tissue to create new tissue fibroblasts and collagen, which produces a tightening effect from inside out. As these threads are biodegradable, they are gradually absorbed by the body, leaving nothing behind but only the integrated tissue structure under the skin due to collagen synthesis, and it will continue to hold for up to 24 months.

PDO Thread Lift can be applied to anywhere on the body, including the face, eye corners, cheeks, double chin, neck, forehead, laugh lines, forearm and abdomen. The PDO threads are so versatile that they can also be used to heighten the nose bridge, giving it a natural elevated look. The latest PDO threads can even used to enhance the nose tip! This is something that cannot be done with dermal filler injection. It can potentially last 2 years as compared to fillers which only last for 6 to 12 months. What I feel is most important is that the result is a more natural-looking, structured nose!

The husband was with me throughout the procedure and immediately after the PDO threads were inserted through my nose, he expressed his bewilderment with the instant results right before his very eyes. Looking at this photo, I’m amazed too!

Like I mentioned earlier, PDO threads are very versatile and they were also used to sharpen my lower face contour for that highly sought after ‘V-shaped’ face. Apart from my nose and lower face contour, Dr Chau injected Sculptra into my hollow tear troughs to create volume to those sunken areas. Hollow tear troughs worsen the appearance of my dark eye circles, making me look tired and older than I really am. Sculptra was also injected into my cheeks to give them more volume. Fuller cheeks make one look so much younger! Sculptra is a kind of liquid face lift which boosts the skin’s own collagen production for facial volume at desired areas, creating a more natural look as the results are gradual and improve with time.

I think I was quite garang to have so many procedures done all at once to my face because my face swelled up like a chipmunk’s that night! However, I didn’t regret my decision because I wanted to see the vast effects clearly. This selfie was taken about two weeks after my face had completely recovered and when there was no more swelling.

A few weeks later, I went back to Dr Chau for my square jaw reduction procedure. Even though PDO threads had been inserted to create a sharper lower face contour, Dr Chau suggested enhancing it by injecting Dysport (Botulinum toxin) to relax the jaw muscles, making them exercise less. To top it all off, Dr Chau even went a step further to inject dermal filler to my chin to make it more prominent, resulting in an even sharper V shaped face!

I didn’t know how different I look until I compared my Before and After photos. Many friends actually came up to me and complimented that I look really good now but so far, I haven’t been asked if I did anything to my face. I only shared about the above non-invasive aesthetic procedures with a group of friends when one of them asked which photo editing app do I use to enhance my features! Through my growing up years, I had made numerous trips to the Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park. There is always so much to see and do at these nature attractions that it really never gets old! When misterchewy and I started dating in mid 2010, I was a little surprised when he suggested a trip to the Singapore Zoo so that we could both relive our childhood memories together. Haha I guess that is what most newly dating couples like to do! Look, we even brought Sally and John along!

It was during our zoo trip that we discovered our common passion for photography. I also vividly remember that it started to pour midway and we ran to the nearest cafe to seek shelter. It was when we chatted endlessly and took random selfies while waiting for the rain to stop. This has got to be our unforgettable #MyMandai moment!

I’m glad our relationship took off from there and now that we are parents, it is only natural that we want Little misschewy to experience the same joy and excitement as we did visiting Mandai’s wildlife parks during our younger days. Since one of her first words is “bird”, we decided to take her to Jurong Bird Park where she could be charmed by a plethora of birds! She was 16 months old at that time and it has been a good six months since our last visit!

I bet she didn’t know that penguins are not like all the other birds; they can’t fly but they can swim. Just look at her face. She’s probably thinking, “You guys gotta be kidding me right? Are those birds or fishes?!” LOL. Marvelling at the penguins swimming gracefully could be Little misschewy’s #MyMandai moment!

Looking back, the Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park certainly played a special and significant role in my life. I’m proud to say that I’m one of the many Singaporeans who grew up with these nature attractions and it was nostalgic recollecting #MyMandai moments. In January 2015, it was announced that the Mandai area will be rejuvenated into a nature precinct. There are also plans to add more nature attractions in the Mandai area which is really an exciting piece of news for us!

iSnap The Selfie Place

Why do we take photos? This is a question that I ask myself time and again, and the answer is always the same. I shoot just about anything under the sun but taking photos of my husband and daughter is something that I find so much joy in doing. Of course, I would want to be in the frame too and my fondest memory is when misterchewy and I lugged a tripod around during our three-week long honeymoon in Europe just so that we could capture precious moments for safekeeping. Things became different after Little misschewy came along. It was too much of a hassle, so we chucked the tripod in the store room and resorted mostly to taking selfies with our mobile phones. However, sometimes I feel that even with all the photo editing apps available, the photos taken with our mobile phones just don’t cut it.

Imagine our excitement when we found out about this really cool place called iSnap The Selfie Place! iSnap is the first photography company in Singapore that offers professionally equipped personal studio rooms for taking photos without the need of a photographer. It kinda reminded me of the neoprint booths during my secondary school days except that iSnap is so much more sophisticated of course!

After lunch on Sunday, we headed down to Bugis Village where iSnap is located. Wah seriously I feel so old. I can’t remember when was the last time I shopped for clothes at Bugis Village! It’s conveniently located just across Bugis MRT Station and Bugis Junction shopping mall so I still remember how to go there. Hahaha. iSnap is not difficult to find too. It’s right above Bee Cheng Hiang store, which is near the bus stop.

iSnap has 6 individual studio rooms with a total of 24 themes. Before we went into each room, we had a preview of the backdrops using one of these computers. Basically, the six rooms are Aries, Aquarius, Capricon, Leo, Pisces and Virgo. The variety of backdrops are very fun and colorful, which is definitely suitable for people of all ages!

Our first stop was Aries room which comes with a physical swing and a green backdrop. Doesn’t this look like a professional studio for photoshoot? The difference is that you are now your own photographer and you ~~call~~ take the shots. How? Very simple! Just hold the camera remote in your hand and adjust your pose by checking the huge screen in front of you. Satisfied? Simply press the remote and your shot will be captured! The good thing is that there is no limit to the number of photos taken so you can just fire away and be trigger-happy, which was exactly what happened for us because misterchewy was amused by all the candid and unglam shots of me. LOL.

There are costumes and props but let’s not get too excited first ya! Anyway, we also didn’t want to frighten Little misschewy so we had to make her feel at home by allowing her to roam around and play with the soft toys. I’m sure iSnap has child-friendly vibes because in less than 5 minutes, Little misschewy was smiling and pointing at the swing, going “Kiki! Kiki!” Yes, she likes Hello Kitty too!

Does this even look like a SELFIE to you? I whatsapped this photo to my mum and she instantly replied, “Photoshoot again? Where?” Hahaha. Usually for photoshoot sessions, the photographer will give you instructions on how to pose but at iSnap, we are allowed to unleash our own creativity! The hubs and I are the more conservative type, so for most of the shots, we just stand there and smile. HAHA.

Let your imagination run wild with over 500 costumes and props! Not only do they have costumes for adults, the children costumes are crazy adorable!

Most of the costumes are quite big for Little misschewy but customers are more than welcome to bring their own costumes and props to the studio!

Love the range of couple wear! It’s not everyday that you get to dress like a Korean and call your hubby OPPA!!

Room Virgo! The hubs’ horoscope! Haha. Oh in case you are wondering.. The milk bottle is not a prop! The little one was asking for her milk so we had no choice but to let her drink while we continue taking our selfies.

Little misschewy was taking quite long to finish her milk so I told her to hold up her bottle and say, “CHEERS!” just so that we could capture a smiling shot of her.

Haiyo.. Little misschewy’s attention span is too short. The little pumpkin was more interested in walking around the studio room! But it’s ok! The hubs and I had fun posing in our silly animal costumes!

Moving on to Room Leo! We decided to go au naturel and by that I meant no costumes la! This is one of my favorite backdrops! It looks like some scene straight out from a fairytale.

Holding a bunch of balloons so that we can go UP.. UP.. and AWAY!

I have a confession to make. I think I have been taking my parents for granted all this while and I didn’t know how much they have actually sacrificed for me until I became a new mother myself last year.
