BB Chew Graduates From NTU + Paradise Dynasty Lunch! :D

268533_10150714780275724_720300723_19869222_2103691_n

My dearest boy has officially graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Degree in Chemical Engineering! Yes, he f*cking did it! Haha! I’m really very proud of him because he has been awarded Second Upper Class Honours! Yeah it’s not first class but second upper is second best ok? Hahaha! Anyway in case you’re wondering, I didn’t do as well as him but I got more than just a pass degree. Lol.

DSC_7810com

A few weeks before the NTU Convocation, the only NUS graduate joined Chewy Charles and his very awesome fydp group mates for a Graduation Photoshoot! The shoot was spread over two weekends and although it was a pain having to drag ourselves up in the wee hours of the morning, all of us really had a lot of fun getting dressed in our robes and strutting our stuff (ok kidding) everywhere we went! πŸ˜› We have Joel, a very good photographer in our group to help us with composing the shots, as well as the photoshopping thereafter! Hmm but it also means that he appeared in very few photos. Anyway, a big thank you to Joel! πŸ™‚ Here are some of my favorite shots taken at Botanical Gardens, Punggol Beach, KTM railway track, NTU and Raffles Place! Enjoy! πŸ˜€

Chewy Charles’ convocation fell on a Wednesday so I took leave from work to witness his 10 seconds of fame on stage! Wouldn’t miss it for the world!

_MG_3074

Honestly, it was really boring having to sit through the different schools of engineering before it finally came to the Chemical Engineering batch of graduates. I was trying my best to stay awake. I did a few test shots and finally decided to crop off the sea of motarboards sitting in front of me. Lol! Congrats Mr Chew! πŸ˜€

_MG_3089

_MG_3087

_MG_3122

So where does one go to after graduating? One goes to Paradise! Haha Paradise Dynasty I mean! πŸ˜› Chewy Granny must be really happy for her grandson and she insisted that this meal would be on her! How nice! πŸ™‚

_MG_3098
Pan Fried Pork Dumplings ($3.60 for 3)

All of us thought that these pork dumplings were pretty good. Some dimsum places serve pan fried dumplings that turn out all hard, especially at the sides. The ones at Paradise Dynasty were not the least bit oily and were nicely pan fried at the bottom.

_MG_3100
Chilled Jellyfish

The chilled jellyfish took me by surprise because it was very clean tasting and I half wondered if that was supposed to be the case.

_MG_3103
Sauteed French beans with minced pork

Hmmm I’m not a fan of french beans but Chewy Charles’ parents liked this.

_MG_3105
La Mian with sliced pork in signature pork broth soup ($9.80)

Ok I admit. I had a ramen craving and settled for La Mian. Do I have any other choice? Haha. I wanted something simple for my tastebuds and The la mian with sliced pork in signature pork broth soup was perfect for me. It’s not surprising as to why the soup was so yummy and addictive. We heard that the signature stock consists of ingredients like pork bone, pork ribs and whole chicken which is simmered over slow fire for several hours prior to serving!

_MG_3108

I really have to hand it to the chefs who did a great job kneading and pulling the la mian. Those thin and silky threads certainly made a noodle lover like me very contented! πŸ™‚ And let’s not forget the delicious and tender slices of pork that further enhanced the taste of this bowl of la mian.

_MG_3109
Shanghai Stir Fried Rice Cake

I wasn’t quite accustomed to the taste even though the rice cakes were sticky and had a very nice bite to it.

_MG_3116
Xiao Long Bao Sampling Basket ($13.80)

They missed out on our Xiao Long Bao order and it came to our realization only when we were waiting for our dessert. My favorite color is blue and this sampling basket doesn’t look quite complete without a blue XLB. Hahaha. As we only orderd one basket to share, I helped myself to the Foie Gras XLB and it was amazing that I could really taste the foie gras together with the minced pork! All along, I thought that these colorful XLBs were pretty gimmicky. Now, I’m dying for a revisit to try out the other flavors! πŸ˜›

_MG_3121
Pan Fried Pumpkin Cakes ($3.20 for 3)

I think it was my first time having pan fried pumpkin cakes and I’m glad to declare that I loved it! It kinda resembles our chinese nian gao but it’s definitely less sweet. Chewy texture, I like! πŸ˜‰

Raindrops Cafe: Relieving Our Memories 365 Days Later.. :)

<3 @ raindrops

We wanted to find the perfect place to celebrate our One Year Anniversary but we couldn’t decide exactly where. And then, it hit us. “Why don’t we go back to Raindrops Cafe?” After all, misterchewy and missuschewy had a lovely and memorable dinner there on the day we got together as a couple πŸ™‚

2011 at cineleisure

Firstly, allow me to digress from the topic of food. The food review will come in the later part of this post πŸ˜› Right after we got together on 26th July 2010, we took a photo before our movie started at Cineleisure. And one year later, here we are at the very same spot, dressed in the same clothes and doing the exact same pose πŸ™‚

2010 vs 2011

Here’s a bigger photo for comparison! What say you? πŸ˜›

Raindrops Cafe @ Scape

Raindrops Cafe, located at *Scape, is pretty much still the same except that they have removed a couple of tables so that the place is not as cramped as before. The thing about Raindrops that attracted me right from the start is its glass walls because it gives me the feeling of being enclosed in a little capsule. Hehehe πŸ™‚

DSC04250

This photo was taken back then when they were still using these cute polka dotted napkins! <3

DSC04255

Hahaha that was then! Omg I don’t know what to say! >_<

missuschewy @ raindrops

Who would have thought that one year later, we would be back here relieving our memories? Even though it’s been only a year, we learned many valuable lessons from each other πŸ™‚

DSC04253

Haha Chewy Charles with his long floppy hair which I couldn’t tahan πŸ˜€

misterchewy @ raindrops

He will always be the silly cute boy in my eyes! πŸ˜›

_MG_2929
Beer Battered Mushrooms ($8)

Ok enough of camwhoring. Here comes the food! These button mushrooms, coated with beer batter and deep fried to a shade of golden brown, were surprisingly juicy. I have always thought that nothing beats portobello mushrooms. A pity it was only juicy, and that was it. On the whole, this starter was just bland. We were joking that these mushrooms cost about a dollar each.

_MG_2938
Mushroom Carbonara ($16)

After an unexciting starter, I was glad that my Mushroom Carbonara turned out alright. The penne was cooked al dente and tossed in light cream sauce that wasn’t at all watery, much to my delight. However, I couldn’t determine if it was the maplewood smoked bacon or the cream sauce that made this dish salty. The saltiness was bearable but I had to gulp down some water after I was done with my pasta.

_MG_2946
Fish & Chips ($15)

Again, beer was used as in an ingredient for the batter for frying the pacific cream dory. The fish was crisp, light and tasted decent. However, it was not enough to fill my man’s stomach. We decided to skip desserts at Raindrops and proceeded elsewhere πŸ˜‰

The Surprise Proposal @ Once Upon A Milkshake

_MG_1976eded

Yes. I am officially engaged πŸ™‚ It’s not that I didn’t see this marriage proposal coming. Yeah how can I be so sure? It’s because we work backwards. Last Sept/Oct, after seeking approval from our parents, we balloted for a BTO flat 3 months into dating and was very lucky to get a nice queue number! Location is ideal and we will be staying around the 20th floor (bye to smelly garbage trucks)! Everything went very smoothly and we decided that we will tie the knot in Sept this year. Subsequently, we found a photographer for our engagement shoot and also booked a venue for our solemnization ceremony in Feb. So, apart from the wedding cake and invitation cards, we were only left with one thing — the marriage proposal!
Two crucial questions: 1) WHEN is he going to propose? and 2) HOW is he going to propose?

On 25th June 2011, Chewy Charles went down on one knee and proposed to me at Once Upon A Milkshake (Maxwell outlet). Even till now, I’m extremely overwhelmed by this whole episode. The tremendous effort that he put into preparing this surprise really touched my heart. There are just some things that money cannot buy. I’m simply amazed by how willing and determined Chewy Charles was in the making of the video and of course it would not have been possible without the help of his university buddies from his fydp group. πŸ™‚

So how did I end up at OUAM if it was meant to be a surprise? Chewy Charles roped in our fellow food blogger friends and so, a couple of days before, Maureen texted me that the rest would be going for a tasting and asked if I wanted to go. She even asked me to ask Chewy Charles to join in. I remembered him telling me that he had to collect his transcript at NTU two weeks ago. Boys and girls, open your eyes and look. This is how a fake tasting session would look like. Hahaha!

After ordering our milkshakes, Maureen took a Macbook from the OUAM staff and told us to watch the ‘media kit’ which came in the form of a video clip. Now i’m wondering how could I not have sensed anything amiss when most of them were standing behind me.

Watching the video intently.. That’s Derrick filming me! Sneaky! Haha.

I have to say that I was very surprised and also mildly amused when I saw Chewy Charles in the video πŸ™‚

And then god knows what happened. I CRIED! It was embarrassing I tell you. Those weren’t tears of joy. I was actually crying uncontrollably. Tears kept streaming down my face. If I were alone, I swear I could have wailed out loud. That was how touched I was. Anyway, nobody offered me tissue! So sad leh. πŸ™ Lol!

Haha ok after relating so much about how I felt.. Here’s the proposal video! :))

Well, I don’t know what’s with this expression. I think this was how I looked like when my heart ached for the silly boy upon thinking how much he must have gone through in the process of making this video. I once cried when he accidentally cut his thumb. I’m crazy right.

IMG_2649

Still tearing.. Kai was keeping a lookout for Chewy Charles and his surprise party of 9. When the video was coming to an end, he gave a thumbs up sign and they marched over.

The first thing that Chewy Charles asked me was, “Aiyo! Why you cry until like that?!”

Each one of our 9 friends who formed the surprise party came in holding a heart on stick, forming the words, “PLS MARRY ME”. Chewy Charles contributed to the last letter.

Chewy Charles recited a great deal and I really cannot remember his exact words. I don’t even think I managed to digest what he had said! I was asking myself if this was all just a dream.

After Chewy Charles popped the question, I whispered, “Uhhhh what should I say?” Hahaha fail. It was his idea to pick out ‘Y’, ‘E’ and ‘S’.

This is one of the extremely rare photos of Chewy Charles smilingly so happily! Haha horrible la, there were still tears in my eyes! But anyway, both of us look really happy huh? πŸ˜€

We sincerely want to thank our food blogger and twitter friends (Maureen, Kai, Rey, Derrick, Yan Cai, Jia Yi, Rae, Joyce, Lisa and Ellena). The ‘tasting session’ would not have been possible without them πŸ˜‰ And thanks for all the amazing photos!

IMG_2776

Chewy Charles decided to contact this particular group of my jc girl friends (Alicia, Esther, Nicolez and Joyce) because he figured that if there were any form of leakage, it would seem not as suspicious because he had not met them in person and were not friends with them on facebook. Thanks to these wonderful girl friends who acted as part of the surprise team and took time off to witness this proposal.

_DSC0254

And of course, not forgetting this very important and supportive group of NTU friends (Kai Yang – not in picture, Sin Yee, Kelvin, Hong Ming, Cheng Wei and Joel) who without any complaints (I hope! Haha), helped Chewy Charles in directing, filming and editing the video. They braved the sun and the rain and their efforts are appreciated.

Island Escapade: We love the sun, sand & sea!

DSC00378com

Hello I’m back! I went on a short getaway to Redang over the weekend. This photo was taken as our ferry was approaching the island. It was definitely very comforting to see cloudy blue skies and crystal clear waters! πŸ™‚

We love taking self-shots! Clockwise from top left: At the MRT station, on the coach, at Shahbandar jetty, on the ferry! πŸ™‚

DSC00356com

The bus journey took about 8 hours and it was around 7am when we reached Shahbandar jetty. Super early la!

IMG_7337

The earliest ferry would only set off at 9am, so we sat around and chatted since none of the shops were open that early. Here’s a group shot! It’s my first time travelling with such a big group. All of them are Chewy Charles’ friends from NTU πŸ™‚

I’m really not kidding about the sleepy part! Chewy Charles immediately plonked himself onto the hammock the moment he caught sight of it.

Time to bid goodbye to Redang! We had breakfast at the resort and departed via ferry at 6.30am.

image002

Now, this is bad. I’m beginning to miss the sun, sand and sea! I have my eye of Nikoi Island! I first got to know about this place when I picked up a dive magazine at a local bookstore. Nikoi is a 15-hectare island located about 8km off the east coast of Bintan Island in Indonesia.

image003

What’s so special about Nikoi? It’s one of the most stunning islands! Just look at this photo! I could lie there all day long sipping Tiger beer! πŸ˜›

image004

Being a scuba diver has taught me a lot about being more sensitive to our environment. Conservation and consideration of environmental issues have been a priority in the formulation of the overall development strategy for Nikoi. I’m won over already!

Rock & Ash: $14.90 Dinner Special

215990_10150174511317129_678037128_6692453_815527_n

It’s really amazing how social media brings people together. The food bloggers and tweeps had a rather impromptu dinner gathering at Rock & Ash recently. It all started from a casual remark on Twitter and everyone decided to join in the fun! πŸ˜€ There’s this dinner promotion going on daily from 6pm to 9pm. Order any meal to receive a free drink, soup and dessert, all for $14.90++!

IMG_9784com

There is a wide range of coffee and beverages available but the Homemade Honey Beetroot caught our attention. It tasted pretty raw upon the first sip but after some getting used to, this drink was quite refreshing with an acceptable level of sweetness. I liked the Cream of Mushroom Soup for it was thick and flavourful.

IMG_9796com

Out of the 14 burgers on the menu, I picked the Minty Yogurt Lamb Burger. Unlike most of the beef burgers that my dinner counterparts had, my lamb patty really wasn’t that salty. I liked how chunky it was but could taste neither the mint nor the yogurt. Anyway, eating burgers can be a messy affair. I had mine cut up into quarters. Hehe.

Itacho Sushi: A Happy Sushi Affair :)

Itacho

Hello everyone! Hope you had a great weekend! Today’s post is on Itacho Sushi πŸ™‚ Actually this is long overdue, thus I’ve decided to just make do with a pictorial instead of discarding this altogether because we love the sushi there! Prices were slightly above mid-range though. Bill totalled up to about $80.

Anyway, the boy went for his very first job interview earlier this January and after a gruelling 6-hour of 3 rounds of interview, he got the offer on the spot! πŸ˜€ So even before graduating/commencing work/receiving his first pay, dinner at Itacho was on him! πŸ™‚

About 3 million people visit the Taj Mahal every year. This blog was viewed about 30,000 times in 2010. If it were the Taj Mahal, it would take about 5 days for that many people to see it.

In 2010, there were 78 new posts, not bad for the first year!

The busiest day of the year was November 10th with 388 views. The most popular post that day was Strictly Pancakes: First Dedicated Pancake Cafe in Singapore.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were hungrygowhere.com, thesimplestaphrodisiac.blogspot.com, myfoodsirens.wordpress.com, facebook.com, and thefoodchapter.blogspot.com.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for chef daniel’s kitchen, ah yat dim sum, foodoshoot, kaiseki singapore, and goodwood park durian buffet.

Our last meal for 2010 :)

IMG_7365com

Heyy, how’s everyone? It’s less than 2 hours to a brand new year! What did you have as your last meal for 2010? I’m sure it had some significance! For us, we had something simple. Soba! To be exact, we had Toshikoshi Soba, otherwise known as “Year End Soba” in Japan. It symbolizes longevity, prosperity and health πŸ™‚ Besides this simple dish, we had some sides to go along with.

Daniel’s mum was kind enough to prepare longjing tea and jasmine tea for all of us. She also made delicious wantons! Very good idea to have something savory in the middle of our mooncake-feasting session.
