The Chewys’ Family Trip to Hong Kong Day Two

DSCF6340

Little misschewy’s birthday coincided with the second day of our Hong Kong trip and we had planned an entire day of non-stop eating! Headed to Jordon first thing in the morning!

DSCF6370-001

I wasn’t too keen on breakfast at Australian Dairy Company because I read reviews that this place is quite overrated but the hubs mentioned it’s on his must-try list. Ok la must give and take in a relationship 😛

DSCF6343-001

We stared at the menu for a few minutes without knowing what to order. LOL. In the end we looked around and ordered whatever others were having.

DSCF6352-001

Macaroni with ham was mediocre.

DSCF6356

DSCF6360

DSCF6367

We also ordered the Steamed Egg Pudding and Steamed Milk Pudding which Chanelle loved.

DSCF6371

As we were going to have dim sum in less than a couple of hour’s time, we decided to walk to International Commerce Centre. It was a damn long walk and I think we took at least 20 to 30 minutes to get there. Really no joke because I was babywearing Chanelle and felt like my lower back was gonna break. Haha.

DSCF6378

DSCF6385

Chanelle needs her breakfast too so off to the nursing room we went!

DSCF6386-001

We were so impressed by the nursing rooms in Hong Kong. They have almost everything in there! Weighing scale, high chair, wet wipes, bottle warmer etc.

DSCF6388-001

Clean and comfortable nursing room.

DSCF6395-001

Tin Lung Heen is a two Michelin-star restaurant located on the 102nd level of The Ritz Carlton.

DSCF6399-001

The view. Too bad it was rather hazy that day!

DSCF6423

Soup dumpling with fish maw in superior stock (HK$112)

DSCF6425

DSCF6433

DSCF6437

Petit fours were served and I really liked the osmanthus jelly!

DSCF6428

It was a really wonderful dining experience at Tin Lung Heen and everyone should try the dim sum there when they visit Hong Kong!

DSCF6439

DSCF6448

After lunch, we went to a few shopping malls.

DSCF6457

Took a break by having desserts at the popular Hui Lau Shan but it was so so.

DSCF6458

I posted a photo on my FB page and a reader commented, “I just returned from HKG too. You gotta try the Kai Kee (at Tsim Sha Tsui) deep fried head of fish balls and deep fried cuttlefish balls. SUPER GOOD.” And so, we did just that. Problem was, we found TWO Kai Kee restaurants and none of them sold deep fried balls! It was kinda awkward and we randomly settled for toasted bun with condensed milk and iced milk tea.

DSCF6460

Shortly after that, we passed by Wah Kee Snacks just 200m down and I thought maybe this is the one! The reader probably got the name wrong and it should be Wah Kee instead of Kai Kee. Plus Wah Kee Snacks specialize in a wide assortment of deep fried balls!

DSCF6465

We tried the squid balls and prawn balls which were coated with some delicious spicy sauce which is their secret recipe. SO DAMN GOOD! We even went back after dinner to buy some back for supper! Hahaha.

DSCF6468

DSCF6471

But guess what? The reader said it’s not this. LOLOL. But nvm, we discovered a gem!

DSCF6476

Another Instagram follower suggested that we try the peking duck at Spring Deer Restaurant, also at Tsim Sha Tsui. The restaurant had a pretty old school feel. As we were still feeling quite full, we only ordered Peking Duck (HK$300) to share.

DSCF6483

The hubs looked around us and declared we should have a bottle of Tsingtao beer to go with our duck meat! >_< DSCF6486

Super shiok!

We bought a small sweet potato cake for Chanelle from the bakery below our hotel and we sang a birthday song for her. Hope she had an enjoyable time!

The Chewys’ Family Trip to Hong Kong Day One

IMG_1228

PHEW! I managed to get everything else out of the way so that I can focus on blogging about our second trip of 2015! Back in mid March, The Chewys flew to Hong Kong for a 5D4N stay which was planned as Chanelle’s first birthday trip! Come to think of it, it was also a way to reward misterchewy and I for surviving our first year of parenthood. LOL. Of course, parenthood is not without its ups and downs, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our family members, who have been very helpful and forthcoming. We truly appreciate it! Ok back to the story. I have been toying with the idea of a birthday trip for the little one for quite some time but was put off by the exorbitant prices probably because her birthday falls in the same week as the March school holidays. Yeah but in the end, we went ahead with the plan because we wanted some time to ourselves!

DSCF6224

We flew with Singapore Airlines and the airfare alone cost us about $1.2K. We did feel the pinch of course, with our home renovation underway and all. But it’s ok. Let’s enjoy first! Hahaha. Catching our flight early in the morning!

IMG_1236

Happy Chewys on the plane! Can you spot Little misschewy’s first tooth sprouting at the bottom? XD

IMG_1245

I think we booked our tickets in January, right after returning from our trip to Phuket, and hence we managed to secure the bassinet seats. The bassinet failed to serve us well because Chanelle only slept like 5 minutes in it and she was wide awake throughout the flight. The husband and I didn’t get to watch Penguins of Madagascar. Boohoo.

IMG_1253

It was an energy zapping 4-hour journey for us! Hahaha.

DSCF6229

After touching down at Hong Kong International Airport and collecting our luggages, we couldn’t be more relieved to meet our driver who was patiently waiting for us, holding up a placard with my name on it. He promptly took over our luggages and led us to our vehicle.

DSCF6231

Really lucky and grateful to have Blacklane sponsoring our airport transfer both ways! Blacklane provides professional ground transportation at the lowest rates in over 180 cities all over the world. The steps to booking your ride is extremely simple. Via Blacklane’s website or app, enter the following details: Pickup and Dropoff locations OR the number of hours you wish to book the a car and driver for and your desired pick up time. After which, you get to select the car class which best suits your needs and budget! We selected the Business Class vehicle which allows a maximum capacity of 3 passengers and 2 luggages.

DSCF6236

After booking, I received two emails. The first email was to acknowledge my booking and the second email was sent as soon as a suitable driver had been assigned to handle my ride request. When I switched on my mobile phone at the airport, I received email and SMS updates informing me that our car is on its way, and a second one as soon as our driver has arrived at the pickup location. It was a very pleasant feeling to be reassured a few times, knowing that you have got a reliable driver waiting to pick you up!

DSCF6234

Bottled water to keep us hydrated throughout the 30-minute ride.

DSCF6238

Loving the Mercedes E-Class!

DSCF6239

Gotta thank Hotel Jen Hong Kong for the complimentary two nights and special rates for the remaining two! We really love the convenient location of the hotel. Hong Kong University MTR station is a mere 3-minute walk from the hotel! We stayed at Kowloon the previous few times we visited Hong Kong separately. This was our first time staying at Hong Kong Island but it wasn’t a hassle at all when we wanted to get to Kowloon. Also, Hotel Jen provides complimentary shuttle service to certain areas at various timings throughout the day.

DSCF6243-001

We were thrilled to check into this lovely Club Harbour View room which offered us a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour. At 24sqm in size, our room was reasonably spacious for the 3 of us.

DSCF6244-001

Our room came with free WiFi, full sized Executive writing desk, cable television, movie channels, electronic safe, steam iron and ironing board, amongst many other amenities.

DSCF6245-001

We were impressed by the smart en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower! Also, the toiletries provided by Hotel Jen were adequate.

DSCF6249

As usual, Little misschewy had the honor of testing the comfy bed.

IMG_1262

Cheeky girl grabbed her pants and tried to escape after I changed her diaper. Haha.

DSCF6269

We were famished but it was too early for dinner. Afternoon tea at Mandarin Oriental’s Clipper Lounge it was!

DSCF6273

DSCF6276-001

Not wanting to ruin the dinner plans we had in mind, we ordered the Afternoon Tea for One (HK$278 + 10%) to share.

DSCF6290-001

Devon clotted cream and rose petal jam. Both were so goooood!

DSCF6298

The afternoon tea items were great but I found the service somewhat aloof. Well, I can still close one eye. Hahaha.

DSCF6299-001

DSCF6301

DSCF6321-001

Actually this trip was mainly an eat and eat and eat trip! I must warn my readers first. LOL. Within the next two hours, we settled our dinner at Tsui Wah Restaurant at Central (Wellington branch). They have quite a few branches all over Hong Kong.

DSCF6304-001

Iced Milk Tea.

DSCF6309-001

Hainanese Chicken Rice was surprisingly delicious!

DSCF6313

The best time to eat in a cramped cafe or restaurant is when the baby is asleep.

DSCF6314

DSCF6319-001

Pork cutlet burger which was tender and oily in a good way!

DSCF6325

When communicating with the reservation team via email, I told them we probably wouldn’t need the baby cot as Little misschewy co-sleeps with us. However we changed our mind after checking in. Having a baby cot is the best way to contain her so that she doesn’t fall off the bed if we are not looking. And the baby cot is so cute!

DSCF6328

“Let me out if not this bunny is gonna get hurt real bad!”

DSCF6329

Surprise birthday cake specially arranged by the hotel! Chanelle’s birthday wasn’t until the next day but it was a really nice and sweet gesture!

The Chewys’ Hong Kong Trip Video!

During our recent trip to Hong Kong, we took some videos just for the fun of it and decided to compile the snippets together to depict our entire vacation! Both misterchewy and I don’t have any prior experience with video editing and stuff, so it took us quite a while to figure things out. Hehehe please bear with us because we know that this video is very amateurish but we reckon it’s a nice change to be able to document our trip in a different manner. Having said that, do look out for the photos that we will still be posting on this space soon!

Recently I was invited to try a website called ShopBack, which is a cashback website that gives you rebates for buying through them. When you buy through their website, they get commission from the brands, which they split with you as cash rebates! It’s pretty useful because they have websites like Expedia and Agoda, which means I can get cashback rebates for hotels or flights next time. Enjoy and happy hump day! 🙂

The Chewys’ First Family Trip to Phuket

IMG_9236

WHOOHOO! In mid January, The Chewys went for our first vacation of 2015 and it was also our very first family trip with Little misschewy! We have always wanted to bring Chanelle overseas, especially after our last trip to Taiwan without her. It was a huge mistake back then when we booked our air tickets during my third trimester, thinking that we needed to spend some couple time without the baby immediately after my confinement! Needless to say, we missed Chanelle terribly during the trip and swore to ourselves, never again. Fast forward a few months later, we felt that Chanelle is ready and is quite adaptable, and as parents, we are also pretty confident about bringing her overseas. However, we weren’t sure how she would fare for the first flight so we decided to be safe and chose Phuket as our holiday destination because of its close proximity and also, we wanted a relaxing time at one of the Phuket villas. 🙂

_MG_5354

And so, the day came. We were very excited and a little bit nervous. Had to take a photo at the Departure gate before bidding my in-laws goodbye!

IMG_9221

We flew with Singapore Airlines for obvious reasons. Didn’t manage to get bassinet seats for the flight to Phuket so the hubs and I took turns to let Chanelle sit on our laps with the infant seat belt securely fastened. A family wefie before take off! 🙂

IMG_9226

In no time, we were high high up in the sky! The curious girl peeped out of the window a few times. Chanelle was tired, yet she wasn’t exhausted enough to fall asleep on her own. She fussed and cried a little, but was soon entertained by a Caucasian couple sitting behind us.

IMG_9232

Slept as soon as the plane touched down!

IMG_9233

Our resort quoted us 1300 Thai Baht (THB) for a one way trip via a Toyoto Camry from the airport, which is about 50 SGD. I found it exorbitant for what is estimated to be a 30 minute car ride and didn’t proceed with the transport reservation. We couldn’t believe what we saw upon stepping out of the airport. Taxi meter! We asked for an estimate and were quoted 700 THB including 100 THB airport surcharge. Hurray!

_MG_5415

Little misschewy slept soundly throughout the entire journey and woke up promptly when we reached the resort of our choice – The Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa! I joined the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) programme late last year and decided to stay at one of the Starwood properties for this trip. Out of the 3 resorts currently available, we decided to stay at The Westin Siray Bay because the private beach appealed to us.

_MG_5586

We received a very warm welcome as soon as we got off the taxi. If my memory doesn’t fail me, we were each served a refreshing glass of orange juice topped with crushed ice as a welcome drink. Certainly needed one to cool off in the sweltering heat!

_MG_5583

Situated on the exclusive east coast of Phuket, The Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa, Phuket offers a rejuvenating tropical haven overlooking the magnificent Siray Bay with all you need to be at your best. This luxury five star resort boasts contemporary design and the renowned warm Thai culture, welcoming guests into this respite of tropical elegance. The resort is just minutes away from Phuket Town, cultural attractions, local markets, restaurants and shopping.

IMG_5587

The Westin Siray Bay Resort is quite big, hence a buggy is required to get around the resort, especially if you room is located a distance away from the reception or restaurants.

_MG_5414

Each of the 257 contemporary guestrooms, suites and pool villas offers ocean views of Siray Bay. We were really lucky that our room was upgraded to a Sala Pool Villa!

_MG_5456

_MG_5405 We were really ecstatic!

_MG_5393

_MG_5391

Our pool villa was definitely the epitome of comfort and coziness! The hubs and I couldn’t stop gasping at this and that, and behaved like little kids. LOL.

_MG_5385

Here’s a glimpse of our bathroom. _MG_5382

We didn’t use the tub at all because it was impossible with Chanelle around. Haha!

_MG_5408

The Westin is very generous with their bath amenities! They have almost everything!

_MG_5389

_MG_5410

The resort’s mini bar items are chargeable, except for bottled water with tags. They are pretty generous with the bottled water! We found at least 6 bottles in our room and they are stocked daily.

_MG_5411

_MG_5412

The mini fridge does not have a freezer compartment so I left my freezing panels for my cooler bag with the resort’s kitchen. The drinks inside the fridge are not complimentary.

IMG_9243

Sooo.. What did we have planned for our first day in Phuket? Nothing! Just wanted to take a dip in our very own private pool! Chanelle was like.. Mummy can you please hurry up I wanna play with water NAO. Hahaha! Just look at that face.

_MG_5546

DSCF3433

DSCF3439

Chanelle enjoyed the pool so much that we felt bad carrying her out of the water >_<

_MG_5418

We were invited to a cocktail reception at one of the restaurants at the resort, EEST, where we enjoyed free flow drinks and canapes! It was very nice of the hotel managers (I think) to mingle with guests and it made us feel right at home. We hung around for about 15 minutes before moving off to our dinner venue within the resort.

_MG_5443

Dinner was at Prego by the Beach. SPG members are entitled to 15% off! Here, you will find Italian cuisine served in a fun, lively and lighthearted atmosphere featuring an open kitchen and bar overlooking the beach.

_MG_5439

_MG_5435

_MG_5432

Honestly, I wouldn’t say that the food was fantastic. In fact, my risotto was way too salty. After dinner, we headed back to our pool villa via the buggy and called it a night!

_MG_5451

I can’t remember what time it was when I sneaked out in the morning to snap the sunrise. I was too sleepy to linger any longer and crawled back to the comfy bed.

IMG_9272

It was the hubs’ turn to take this photo while Chanelle and I were still sound asleep. When the little bub woke up, we went for a casual photoshoot within the compounds of the resort and had to skip breakfast. Will share photos in another post! 🙂

_MG_5459

Little misschewy was simply too exhausted after the photoshoot and fell asleep. Both misterchewy and I were feeling ravenous so we didn’t hesitate to call room service to deliver food to us!

IMG_9277

Phad Thai and Minced Basil Pork with rice! Sooooo yummy! The food was also surprisingly quite cheap but we didn’t order more stuff to share because we were planning to go to Patong! The resort provides shuttle bus service to Phuket Town and Patong Beach at a small fee of THB100 and THB200 per person per way.

IMG_5561

As soon as the little one woke up from her nap, we went around to take some photos by the pool before the shuttle bus came to pick us up. _MG_5464

On the shuttle bus! The journey took almost an hour because of the heavy traffic.

_MG_5480

We were dropped off at Jungceylon which is a shopping mall but we were not very keen to shop there even though it was air conditioned and a great respite from the heat. Didn’t know how to walk to Patong Beach so we took a taxi and paid another THB 200 for the short journey.

_MG_5484

_MG_5485

IMG_9290

You know what? It’s actually a pretty bad idea to go to Patong Beach with a baby in tow. Firstly, you cannot enjoy any of the sea sports activities and secondly, the weather is too hot, making it quite ridiculous for you to babywear your child. We had to cool off at the air conditioned food court nearby! Good thing there is free wifi there.

IMG_9286

_MG_5488

There was nothing for us to buy at Patong, save for a couple of souvenirs. Decided to have dinner around the area before returning to our resort.

IMG_9293

I don’t usually drink coconut but when I do, I make sure I take a selfie. LOLLLL.

IMG_9297

IMG_9312

Yeehah! Chanelle’s first tuk tuk ride! 🙂 _MG_5518

Kaab Gluay Restaurant is located further north of Patong beach, along 58/3 Phrabaramee Road. This is one of the places that we had shortlisted from our online research. If we had known that Kaab Gluay doesn’t have a proper high chair for babies, we definitely wouldn’t have come here. It was tough having to take turns to eat!

_MG_5509

_MG_5515

As I’m writing this, I can’t believe we travelled all the way there just to eat 3 dishes! 🙁

_MG_5498

Phad Thai with seafood.

_MG_5501

Green Curry with chicken.

_MG_5506

Tom Yum Soup with seafood.

Even though we only had three dishes to share, we were really full by the time we were done. Food was exemplary and well worth the visit! Highly recommended! On a side note, the tom yum was fiery hot and I developed a sore throat overnight for wiping the entire bowl clean! The hubs only had a few mouthfuls because he can’t take spicy food.

IMG_9316

_MG_5526

Our last night in Phuket! IMG_9329

The next morning, I told the hubs that we must let Chanelle have another round of fun in the pool before leaving the resort!

IMG_9327

_MG_5537

It was a quick one before we prepared ourselves for breakfast!

_MG_5567

_MG_5564

_MG_5563

The breakfast buffet spread was quite sumptuous! IMG_9342

Our check-out was smooth. This time, our journey to the airport cost us THB 1000 which is slightly more than what we paid for to travel from the airport to our resort, inclusive of airport surcharge. The rate was quoted by the resort so we had to go along with it.

IMG_9350

Chanelle fell asleep while she was latching, even before the plane took off! #achievementunlocked

IMG_9352

Our light sleeper woke up when food was being served. Didn’t have a choice but to place her in the bassinet so that we could eat in peace!

IMG_9357

Papa and mummy are so glad that you enjoyed your first overseas trip, darling!

_MG_5603

Hope you guys had a good time reading about our holiday experience with a baby in tow! Happy Chinese New Year and HUAT AH! Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

{ Taiwan Travelogue Part Two } Taipei Day 4: Mr J French Italian Restaurant, Addiction Aquatic Development, Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice

IMG_2554

We have finally come to the end of our Taiwan travelogue! On our last full day in Taipei, we decided to chiong finish all the places that we wanted to visit (actually not many.. LOL) and our first stop was Jay Chou’s Mr J French Italian Restaurant (Mr J 義法廚房)!

_MG_2558

We actually came here the night before, after returning from our day trip to Shifen. BUT it was pouring like crazy, the taxi driver dropped us off at the wrong location, my slippers broke, we were totally drenched and to make matters worse, when we finally arrived.. Kitchen closed like 10 minutes before! ARGH. Talk about ultimate suayness! At least we succeeded in the end cuz we are Jay Chou fans! 😀

_MG_2559

The theme of the restaurant revolves around Jay Chou’s award-winning directorial debut movie “Secret” (不能說的秘密) which was shot in a school setting and hence, the restaurant is aptly located within Taipei Medical University. I love this movie so much that I watched it at least a few times and I can never get sick of it. It’s such a clever movie but that’s not surprising given that Jay Chou is really talented.

_MG_2562

In the movie, this old piano in the old school building is actually a time machine which brought Ye Xianglun (played by Jay Chou) and Lu Xiaoyu (played by Gwei Lun-mei) together even though the latter was living in the past.

_MG_2563

Please refrain from playing the piano to avoid being transported 20 years back.

IMG_2572

IMG_2573

IMG_2594

As compared to what we had at Jay Chou’s Fujiwara Tofu Shop, the food here is so much better!

_MG_2577

My Mentaiko Pasta had a very rich umami taste. I enjoyed every bit of it!

IMG_2592

_MG_2602

The hubs’ Mushroom Risotto was also quite good!

_MG_2606

_MG_2591

IMG_2607

_MG_2620

_MG_2616

Can’t believe we finished checking out all of Jay Chou’s restaurants already! We asked one of the service staff and she said that the other restaurant had ceased operations.

IMG_2690

Our stomachs 70% filled, we left for Addiction Aquatic Development which is like an unconventional and modern fish market. I know that this might not best describe it, but I thought the concept is kinda like Singapore’s PasarBella except that you find mostly fresh seafood here.

Melt-in-the-mouth goodness! The husband’s favourite.

IMG_2681

IMG_2693

IMG_2695

IMG_2712

We decided to go for Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice (金峰魯肉飯) even though we weren’t exactly feeling hungry because quite a number of people favors this over Formosa Chang. Wanted to compare!

IMG_2709

IMG_2697

IMG_2701

Honestly, Jin Feng’s braised pork rice tasted as good as Formosa Chang’s one la. I couldn’t really tell the difference.

IMG_2704

IMG_5538

We departed Taipei the very next day. The hubs bought this Hello Kitty Chang Kai Shek edition mobile phone strap to add to my collection of ONE. LOL. I have this floating market one which we bought at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Hehe.

IMG_5528

Took this selfie on our way to the airport while eating Ah Chung Mee Sua on the bus! Looking forward to our next holiday, hopefully with Chanelle this time! 🙂 Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 😀

{ Taiwan Travelogue Part Two } Taipei Day 3: Releasing Sky Lantern in Shifen

_MG_2492

I would advise you against travelling to Taipei in May. It rained without fail every single day of our trip! The hubs wanted to have breakfast at Yong He Dou Jiang Da Wang (永和豆漿大王) so we took the metro and alighted at Da’an Station. Had to walk quite a fair bit but thank goodness we had an umbrella with us and misterchewy’s navigating skills are good if not I would have whacked him with the umbrella 😛

_MG_2490

Eating dou jiang (豆浆) and you tiao (油条) in Taipei has never once crossed my mind but I just went along with misterchewy’s suggestion.

IMG_2473

IMG_2475

IMG_2477

IMG_2478

_MG_2485

_MG_2480

Obviously, we over ordered! I was already quite full when I was done with just the dou jiang and you tiao lor. Haha!

_MG_2495

We made a trip to Long Shan Temple to give thanks for the smooth delivery of our baby. My parents visited this temple last year and prayed for the safety of both mother and child 🙂

Our highlight of the day was releasing sky lantern (天灯) at Shifen (十分)! As with Jiufen, we had to take a train to Ruifang in order to reach Shifen. We didn’t get to board the express train this time so the journey was excruciatingly long because the train stopped at every single station! By the time we reached Shifen, I low batt liao. Old already. HAHA.

IMG_2501

The name Shifen came about because there used to be 10 families living in the town. It has this rustic old charm just like Jiufen.

IMG_5490

If you had watched the romantic flick “You Are The Apple of My Eye” (那些年,我們一起追的女孩), you would know that Ko Ching-teng (played by Ko Chen-tung) and Shen Chia-yi (played by Michelle Chen) released a sky lantern in Shifen in one of the scenes. The hubs and I loved the movie and naturally, we were excited to be able to do the same right here in Shifen, along the railway track! 🙂

IMG_2502

Apparently, the act of releasing sky lanterns had been made even more popular by the movie and of course, it’s not surprising that others would want to capitalize on this as a source of income.

IMG_2504

There were so many shops selling souvenirs and sky lanterns of various colors! We randomly said ok to one of the sellers who approached us because we were too lazy to compare prices. By and large, the prices should be similar.

IMG_2505

We paid NT$200 for a particular multi-colored sky lantern, meaning all four sides are of a different color and each color represents a different aspect of life. There are various color combinations available for you to choose from. We chose Health (red), Wealth (yellow), Education/Work (blue) and Love (orange). Simply unleash your creativity and write/draw your wishes on the paper lantern. Once you are done, the shop assistants will help to light up your lantern so that you can release it into the sky and your wishes will be carried to heaven.

IMG_2517

We were given a calligraphy brush to write with which can get pretty messy if you are not careful. Some of what I wrote was contributed by misterchewy! HAHAHA.

IMG_2526

IMG_2527

IMG_2532

It was pouring intermittently and once it slowed down to a slight drizzle, the both of us rushed out and told the guys that we wanted to release our sky lantern NOW!

IMG_2534

IMG_2541

IMG_2545

IMG_2546

It was fascinating to be able to see our lantern drift off into the sky.

IMG_2548

I know that our prayers will be heard and our wishes will come true! 🙂

{ Taiwan Travelogue Part Two } Taipei Day 2: Jiufen & Jay Chou Fujiwara Tofu Shop

IMG_2361

Day 2 in Taipei saw us waking up early in the morning because we had planned to go to Jiufen (九份)! As mentioned in my previous post, we stayed at iTaipei Service Apartment which is located right above Taipei Main Station. It was really convenient for us.

IMG_2357

IMG_2358

Queuing to buy train tickets to Ruifang.

IMG_5448

The express train journey took about an hour. It was raining when we reached Ruifang. 🙁 Waited for the public bus to take us up to Jiufen.

IMG_2374

I had been to Jiufen at least 3 or 4 times and honestly, I don’t find this place interesting. Plus it always rains in Jiufen! 🙁 It was misterchewy’s idea to visit Jiufen again.

IMG_0923

IMG_2372

Stopped by Zhang Ji Traditional Fish Balls (張記傳統魚丸) for lunch.

IMG_2364

Braised pork rice! These were quite good, although not exactly fantastic. The rice could definitely use more sweet soy sauce.

IMG_2368

Their mixed balls soup was pretty awesome! My favourite was the cuttlefish ball.

IMG_2363

We were so hungry that we ordered another bowl of braised pork rice and mixed balls soup to share 😛

IMG_2373

_MG_2377

IMG_0916

_MG_2383

_MG_2387

Feeling kinda full already but we stopped by Lai Ah Po Yu Yuan (赖阿婆芋圆) for handmade taro balls. Heh.. I think I still prefer Blackball because it’s sweeter 😛

_MG_2389

IMG_0921

I was initially quite worried about going to Jiufen because I was quite sure that there wasn’t any nursing rooms there. Thankfully, misterchewy did some searching online and told me that we could take a 10 minute bus ride to Jinguashi Gold Ecological Park. Taiwan is really baby-friendly! This kinda place can also find nursing room. Really not bad!

IMG_0925

IMG_0940

The hubs bought this Agnes B bijoux bangle for me at Q Square shopping mall on our way back to our hotel! 😀

_MG_2456

AHHHHHH! I can hardly contain my excitement! We had dinner at Jay Chou’s Fujiwara Tofu Shop!! It was really a dream come true for us Jay Chou fans! 😀 😀 😀

_MG_2455

This photo was taken during closing time. There were only about 5 tables of customers that night. The location wasn’t that easy to find, imo.

_MG_2457

If you don’t already know, this restaurant is named after the tofu shop owned by the characters played by Jay Chou and Anthony Wong (as his dad) in the popular movie, Initial D.

_MG_2434

We randomly chose a place to sit but apparently we hit jackpot! Sat right next to the iconic Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86)! There was a mini one too! How cute 🙂 I suppose nobody sat there because it was near the entrance. Haha.

_MG_2444

I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time we were there 😛

_MG_2448

_MG_2408

We bought an unopened bottle of Ramune soda (also known as marble soda) and brought it back to Singapore as a souvenir.

_MG_2400

I might update this space again if I manage to find the receipt. Honestly, the food is mediocre but we didn’t regret at all! 🙂

_MG_2412

_MG_2425

_MG_2438

_MG_2461

InitialD

_MG_2462

HAHAHA. I swear it wasn’t my idea! 😛

_MG_2471

It was an extremely memorable night for misterchewy and I. I know it sounds kinda funny but it was as though we could feel Jay Chou’s presence. LOL! We visited another of Jay’s restaurant two days later which will be featured soon! Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

{ Taiwan Travelogue Part Two } Taipei Day 1: Ah Chung Mee Sua, Formosa Chang, iTaipei Service Apartment Review

IMG_2272

Hot on the heels of Part One of our Taiwan travelogue featuring our short stay in Cingjing, Part Two will be spilt into 4 mini posts because we spent 4 nights in Taipei. Hehe. As I had mentioned in my previous posts, misterchewy and I really enjoyed our two-night stay at Dreamtown Minsu (嵐山小鎮) because our room was comfortable and the people were very hospitable. My heartfelt gratitude to 二姐 who thought of an ingenious way to transport my frozen breast milk from Cingjing to Taipei. Will be sharing tips another time! 😉

IMG_2281

Upon reaching Taipei, we left our luggage with the hotel concierge and immediately headed to Xi Men Ding for Ah Chung Mee Sua (阿宗麵線)! It’s a must eat each time we go to Taipei and this trip alone, we patronized Ah Chung thrice!

IMG_2279

Salivating at the thought of a delicious piping hot bowl of mee sua with braised large pork intestines, topped with some garlic, chilli and vinegar! YUMS!

10301605_726245517426666_4176977768808731823_n

Look at that! The pork intestines were damn chewy! Ah Chung Mee Sua is legendary. I used to think that it’s overrated but not anymore. Totally missing this now!

IMG_2278

_MG_2285

And then we decided to have Hot Star Large Fried Chicken. Aiya since we were already at Taipei, then just eat all the way.

_MG_2288

Just fyi, the fried chicken cutlet are not cut up like what you typically see in Singapore. The entire slab was bigger than our faces. The ones that we had in Singapore were usually dry and a little tough but Hot Star’s fried chicken was superbly crispy and succulent.

IMG_0882

It started to rain and we decided to go back to our hotel to rest and for me to express my milk. Got a shock when we saw this. We were rudely reminded of the crazy human traffic back home! Muahahaha. After our short break, we took the metro to Wufenpu to do some shopping.

IMG_0896

_MG_2332

It wasn’t our first time visiting Wufenpu and each time, I would leave almost empty handed because I don’t fancy lacy dresses. I see plenty of that at Wufenpu! Guys clothing are so much nicer!

_MG_2333

_MG_2328

IMG_2354

If you intend to do some shopping at Wufenpu, do cross over to Formosa Chang (鬍鬚張) for a taste of really fabulous braised pork rice (滷肉飯) that you will never be able to get in Singapore! Food is damn cheap and good!

IMG_2355

IMG_2341

IMG_2343

IMG_0897

This bowl of braised pork rice (NT$33) may look simple but its taste is far more complex. Stewed in sweet soy sauce, every mouthful was so fragrant and the shreds of fatty pork melted in the mouth. It’s a pretty small bowl so we ordered another large one to share.

IMG_2337

You have to order the pork trotter (NT$80) to go with your braised pork rice. Loved it for its gelatinous texture! I think I almost polished off the entire plate because misterchewy is not a fan of pork trotters.

IMG_2347

IMG_2340

IMG_2353

_MG_2293

Spent four nights at the very awesome iTaipei Service Apartment. Our room was lofty and spacious, clean, and the location of iTaipei is good! It is situated at Taipei main station, above Q Square shopping mall. Talk about convenience!

{ Taiwan Travelogue Part One } Cing Jing Day 2: Green Green Grassland & Carton King Restaurant

IMG_2052

Imagine waking up to this sight. The view is beautiful and the air feels fresher in Cingjing. If you have read my previous post, you would know that the weather wasn’t too kind on the day we arrived Cingjing. It rained the entire day! The weather on day 2 of our trip was good! In fact, it was hot and sunny. You don’t really need a jacket or sweater in the day if it’s not raining in Cingjing. Can just walk around in t-shirt and shorts 🙂

IMG_2059

Enjoying the view while having breakfast prepared by one of the minsu auntie.

IMG_2064

Very simple breakfast but so homely and delicious, which warmed the cockles of my heart.

IMG_0833

Before setting off for our first destination of the day, 二姐 invited us to take a look at her new pets! She bought these cute little chicks from the market that morning and named them Bao Bao and Bei Bei. She even lifted up their cage and allowed them to strut around. Too cute!

IMG_2070

When 二姐 knew that we wanted to go to Green Green Grassland, she offered to give us a ride! It sure saved us a lot of time waiting for the public bus. Really damn hot with the sun shining down on us! Regretted wearing long sleeves with jacket somemore. We quickly proceeded to purchase the entrance tickets which cost about NT$200 per person.

IMG_2071

The hubs and I were pretty amused by the name Green Green Grassland because it’s the direct translation of 青青草原! Anyway, Green Green Grassland is the largest attraction in Cingjing so you might wanna set aside a few hours just for this. There were definitely more people than sheep when we first went in! Before trekking down, we could see people following the sheep everywhere they went, just to take a decent photo. LOL.

IMG_2078

IMG_2085

IMG_2087

The sheep were roaming about freely and nom-ing on grass. You can purchase food for the sheep too if you wanna draw their attention to you 😛

IMG_2091

IMG_2094

IMG_2093

IMG_2097

IMG_2099

This photo quite funny! Looks as though misterchewy is out to steal some sheep!

IMG_2104

IMG_2105

IMG_2122

This hand appeared from nowhere and offered us food for the sheep! Ok la we bumped into a very friendly Singaporean auntie so we asked her to help us take photo too 😛

IMG_2124

IMG_2125

Time for sheep show! Spot the odd one out!

IMG_0845

IMG_2127

OMG the weather was freaking HOT. All of us were shielding ourselves with our umbrellas but were told to keep them before the show started in order not to block anyone’s view of the stage. Took off my jacket and folded up my sleeves but the heat was still unbearable!

IMG_0851

_MG_2133

The sheep show was quite similar to the one I saw in Australia. Basically sheep shearing and stuff. Quite entertaining though!

IMG_2138

IMG_2140

IMG_2141

Awwww this pony looks so cute but a little sad, don’t you think?

_MG_2146

_MG_2150

I decided to try sheep milk ice cream!

_MG_2154

The taste is really.. unforgettable!

IMG_2155

IMG_2159

_MG_2161

IMG_5413

IMG_2184

There was a whole line of stalls selling food, food and more food.

_MG_2175

It was really fun to be able to walk alongside so many sheep! To be honest, I was a little scared though. There were some teenagers (both guys and girls) screaming their heads off when the sheep charged towards them. LOL!

_MG_2182

_MG_2169

_MG_2172

IMG_2206

All that walking around made us super hungry and we took the bus to Carton King Restaurant! Almost everything is made using corrugated cardboard, which I guess is the only interesting thing about this restaurant. Haha! But then again, it’s really amazing the amount of things that one can do with cardboard alone.

IMG_2187

IMG_2209

IMG_2208

IMG_2186

IMG_2190

Drinks are interestingly packaged in a carton, and you can ask the staff to flatten it for you to bring home and subsequently use as a coinbox!

_MG_2198

_MG_2204

Both of us ordered the Steamboat Set (NT$380)! Mine was Japanese style fish soup base which was very sweet tasting and yummy!

_MG_2205

The hubs went for the Hokkaido concentrated milk soup base and it tasted a little like carbonara! I can’t imagine drinking so much of the soup! Like so fattening lor. But the hubby liked it.

_MG_2202

We were very satisfied with our lunch at Carton King Restaurant. Wanted to order some snacks initially but we were too full when we were done with our steamboat.

_MG_2216

_MG_2220

IMG_2223

IMG_2225

IMG_0864

It was a real pity that Small Swiss Garden is closed for maintenance till around mid June. We didn’t have anywhere else to go and decided to take photos at the free photobooth inside 7-Eleven. Haha!

_MG_2213

We went on a night tour to see fireflies and stars but didn’t capture it on camera. It was quite an eye-opening experience for us and we had a good time getting close to nature! This marks the end of part one of our Taiwan travelogue! Next up, we will be featuring our sightseeing and eating adventures in Taipei.
