Frolick: I know you want the licky licky

Frolick

You had a late lunch earlier in the day.
It’s almost 8pm now.
Don’t feel like eating dinner?
But mouth feels itchy?

Frolick collage

The answer to the above is… Yogurt! It is one of the world’s healthiest foods. Not only is yogurt a wonderful, quick, easy and nutritious snack that is readily available, researchers are finding evidence that milk and yogurt may actually add years to your life! Awesome, isn’t it? ๐Ÿ™‚

Frolick 1

The menu at Frolick is pretty easy to understand. Heh.. ๐Ÿ˜› Anyway I had an Original Frozen Yogurt Cup B + 1 topping ($5.10). I chose Oreo cookies among other toppings such as granola, strawberries, mango, kit-kat, etc.

Frolick 2

The yogurt tasted sour but I can still accept it because it’s not too sour for my liking. The crushed Oreo cookies went well with the yogurt. However, I do not agree with their slogan “We stay hard longer than ice cream”. Even though the yogurt was consumed there and then in the shop, it turned watery pretty fast!

Interestingly, they have a Flavor Roster and for those who are keen to try the flavored ones, Peach is on the menu at Tampines currently.

Tampopo: And what is it famous for?

DSC01720com

My first visit to Tampopo was a year ago, on Valentine’s Day.
I remembered my date raving about the black pork served here.
He didnt sound too convincing so I didnt order it.
But ever since then, I have heard a lot of comments about it so I’ve decided to go there while organizing a friend’s birthday celebration. Plus the birthday girl is a fan of Japanese food.
There were 5 of us that night and we decided to share a few dishes so that we could save some room in our stomachs for desserts! ๐Ÿ˜›

DSC01730com

The first thing we made sure we ordered was the Top Grade Loin Cutlet (A la Carte) ($25.80). We decided not to order the set because it was priced at $4 more for just a bowl of rice, soup and fruits. Ok let me claim that I did not manage to have a proper taste of the black pork. I merely had a small piece. I was busy taking photos of the other dishes that arrived and when my eyes went back to the black pork, there was nothing left. Imagine my horror. Those must have been hungry ghosts, i mean girls, that I had been hanging out with! So I cant really give a fair verdict based on that tiny piece of cutlet which I had ๐Ÿ™
But it must have been really good to be eaten up so quickly!

DSC01724com

DSC01722-tile

Same goes for the Black Pork Mini Shabu Shabu Set ($21.80). Everyone was snatching for a piece of it. The soup tasted quite nice. And i loved the mushroom. The one and only piece. There were lots of veggies though.

DSC01732com

We all love curry and the Ishiyaki Stone Grilled Beef Curry ($16.80) was like a godsend. It came with an egg yolk on top and we were contemplating if we should just eat it on its own or smear it all over. We mixed it into the rice in the end. It tasted really great! As mentioned, we love curry. ๐Ÿ˜›

DSC01733com

Since Tampopo is famous for their black pork, someone suggested that we should also order the Black Pork Fried Rice ($10.80). Yes and we were sure glad we did! There were generous bits of black pork and prawns. Now I think fried rice goes better with black pork than char siew. Haha.

DSC01737com

I think I’ll order a loin cutlet for my own consumption if I go there again in future!

Total bill came up to $88.40 after GST.

Nadaman: Mini Kaiseki.. Itadakimasu!

1

2

The Kaiseki menu at Nadaman was altered to suit the budgets of most students taking a particular module in my university.

3

Instead of a maybe 10 course menu, we were offered a Mini Kaiseki ($45) which features 7 courses and this is available only during lunch.

4

We were served two types of appetizers. The Egg Mousse is actually chawanmushi in disguise. It came in a diced shape and had a very rich flavor.

5

Upon my first mouthful of the second appetizer, Boiled Spinach and enoki mushroom with sesame sauce, I immediately thought about the peanut gravy used for satay beehoon! That was exactly how the sauce tasted like. The boiled spinach was slightly spicy and both went well together. On top of that, there were bonito flakes which are usually used as a form of natural flavoring for Japanese food.

6

Next on the list was the Clear soup with seaweed fishcake and vegetables. The soup served at the beginning of the kaiseki is supposed to be quite bland because we will be served another bowl towards the end. I love the seaweed fishcake because it of its texture. It does not taste like the rubbery kind of fishcake that we usually eat.

7

The raw fish served was the Chef’s selection of Tuna and Yellowtail. There were two pieces of each. Everyone oohed and ahhed as they bit into the succulent slices. I think I’d have liked the raw fish even better if they were slightly more chilled.

8

The simmered dish consists of Simmered pumpkin, eggplant, yam and green bean with minced chicken meat sauce. Our sensei who was with us at that time told us that all these are autumn foods in Japan. All of us liked the simmered dish a lot. On the overall, it was tastefully simple for our tastebuds.

9

What’s a Japanese blue fish? We thought to ourselves when we were looking at the menu earlier on. It is actually a type of tuna. We learned that more and more restaurants in Japan are dropping bluefish from their menus as environmentally certified fishing and seafood products become popular in the country.

10

The Grilled Japanese blue fish with teriyaki sauce has a meaty texture easily mistaken for that of a cod fish’s and it has a smooth buttery flavor. It warranted a thumbs up from everyone.

11

The Japanese seem to enjoy adding flavor to plain, boring white rice. The Steamed rice mixed with dried shrimp was very fragrant and it was served with pickles and soya bean paste soup.

DSC01704com

Dessert at last! Now now, you must be wondering what’s a Red bean, black sugar panna cotta doing in a Japanese restaurant!

13

Yeah it’s an Italian dessert but nobody really cares when you can have gooey black sugar trickling down your throat! We all wish we could have more!

14

According to Nadaman, traditional cuisine such as kaiseki is described as ‘the art of transforming the blessings of nature into food’. And boy, we sure are blessed.

The Mini Kaiseki is $45.

The King Louis Grill & Bar: Food fit for a king?

1

I visit Vivocity on a regular basis since it’s a short bus journey from school. The King Louis Grill & Bar first opened last December if I’m not wrong. I have always wanted to check the place out after seeing photos that my friend uploaded. It’s one of those restaurants with interesting deco and features.

page-1

I didnt have lunch that day so I was famished and kinda pleaded with my friend to go for a slightly early dinner. Thus we went in at 5pm and we had the place to ourselves. We took quite a while to decide what to have because they have so many things to choose from!

DSC01519com

I’m a cheese lover so I finally settled for the Crispy Cheesy Chicken with Shitake Mushroom & Salsa ($16.90). The curly fries are good! In fact, I had to tell myself to get started on the chicken instead. The chicken wasnt exactly very crispy, it was more like chicken chop. And it wasnt very cheesy as well. The portion is huge and I didnt manage to finish the fries.

DSC01521com

My friend had the Grilled Ribeye Steak with Lamb Chops ($24.90). He claimed that it is value for money since there was steak and lamb chops. Haha. These were served in rosemary herbs and mint sauce. I did not toy with the idea of trying even one bite since I knew that finishing my own share was quite impossible.

DSC01524com

All I can say is that I’m not particularly fond of Western food (except for fish and chips) so I doubt I’ll be visiting The King Louis Grill & Bar again.

Total bill was exactly $50 after GST.

IKEA Restaurant & Cafe: Swedish Meatballs and more!

DSC01380com

What first comes to your mind when someone mentions IKEA Restaurant & Cafe? For me, it is definitely Swedish meatballs!

DSC01381com

My tennis partner and I had a craving for Swedish meatballs ($6.50 for 10). Hey, what’s new? Ok they tasted as awesome as before when we were there about half a year ago.

DSC01384com

We tried something new too! The Cold Water Prawns ($4.20) caught her attention. Apparently they are caught from Greenland’s deep waters (I wonder how true is this) and served chilled with lemon and dill. Actually, the prawns are quite pale in color and does not look like much. However, we were in for a surprise when we both took a bite! The prawns were surprisingly tasty! We had a difficult time polishing off the entire bowl because there were just too many of them.

DSC01385com

The Chicken Wings ($3 for 2) here can be branded as Ikea chicken wings! They definitely taste different from the normal chicken wings. But I can do without them because I’m only here for the meatballs ๐Ÿ˜›

DSC01386com

DSC01387com

See you again, swedish meatballs! We shall meet in about half a year’s time when I restring my racket over at Queensway, or maybe less if I have a craving for you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Total bill (inclusive of drinks) was about $20.

PS Cafe: P.S. I ___ You

PS Cafe 1

Never in my life had I dreamed that one day, someone would actually take me to PS Cafe. Yes! THE PS Cafe. I am kinda like a mountain tortoise, not having heard about PS Cafe only until my uni days (I’m graduating soon!).

PS Cafe 2

PS Cafe 3

And the common words associated with PS Cafe are “atas”, “expensive leh” and “wah.. that place..” All the more I was intrigued and thought that it is indeed a place that only the upper middle class can afford to go to.

PS Cafe 4

PS Cafe 5

So, when a friend offered to take me there for lunch, I readily agreed! I didnt expect PS Cafe to look like this but I kinda liked it because it resembles a greenhouse! ๐Ÿ™‚ We were there at 3pm and skimmed through the menu quickly because last orders’ at 4pm.

PS Cafe 7

PS Cafe 8

Portobello mushrooms are one of my favorite types of mushroom and so I settled for the Portobello Stack ($22).

PS Cafe 9

The poached eggs were a good complement for the saltiness of the bacon. Other than the portobello mushroom, I thoroughly enjoyed the creamy smoked cheddar potato gratin which was soft and chewy.

PS Cafe 6

My friend had the PS. Brunch Burger ($29). It certainly is no ordinary burger, judging by the looks of it. My, it sure was huge! Sandwiched between two toasted sesame buns were the homemade grilled wagyu & US chuck patty topped with camambert cheese, wilted spinach, crispy bacon, tomato, caramelized onion, herby mayo & fried egg. The fries that came with the burger were very thick too!

PS Cafe 10

Although my friend couldnt finish his toasted sesame buns, we proceeded with the Double Chocolate Blackout Cake ($14.90). I’m not sure if they were trying to clear stock but the serving was very big. The both of us have a sweet tooth so we dug into the more chocolate-ty part of the cake with glee. Eating the cake together with the vanilla ice cream was sheer heaven. We didnt finish the cake because we felt guilty eating it. Too sinful!

PS Cafe 11

I believe that I will be back to try the other dishes that PS Cafe has to offer. ๐Ÿ™‚
As for my opening statement, it is actually quite affordable and not overly priced.

Total bill (inclusive of drinks) was about $98 after GST.

Rakuichi: My very first Kaiseki in Singapore

Rakuichi 1

Thought I should share my experience at Rakuichi now since the Rakuichi Course Special ($68) which my friend and I both had is only till March 2010. You need to have a minimum of two orders before they will serve you this. Although they call it the “Course Special”, in reality it is known as Kaiseki – a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. The food is served in a certain order beginning with appetizer and ends with dessert.

Rakuichi 3

Appetizer (individual portion) was served on a rectangular plate consisting of four items – river shrimp, salmon roe, semi-grilled salmon and tamago.

Rakuichi 6

Rakuichi 5

Next came the Sashimi (sharing portion) – thick slices of assorted raw fish. Extreme freshness and quality guaranteed!

Rakuichi 7

The Grilled scallop and mushroom served in foil (individual portion) was also very fresh and juicy. The dish by itself looked interesting enough.

Rakuichi 8

Wagyu Beef served on hot plate (sharing portion) was a wee bit disappointing after having tried wagyu in Hokkaido! I half expected it to also melt in my mouth but sadly, it failed to produce the same results with the wagyu I had previously ๐Ÿ™ Well, I guess it’s foolishness on my part.

Rakuichi 9

After having oily fare, Steamed Tenaga prawn with egg custard (individual portion) was served. Steamed egg custard never looked so good with that huge a prawn lying on top of it! But we were tricked. We were actually given a cross section of a prawn each. Haha! Nevertheless, I still love this very much. I’m an egg custard fan!

Rakuichi 10

Rakuichi 11

And now comes the rice part, Grilled spicy tuna cut roll & Raw tuna sushi (sharing portion). I learned that rice is served towards the end of a kaiseki but in the past, it was served at the beginning. The reason for such a change is so that people can have room for the other dishes. And how right it is to implement this change!

Rakuichi 12

We were already filled to the brim when the last dish (before dessert) arrived! The Snapper soup served in claypot (sharing portion) didnt leave much of a lasting impression probably because we were really too full. Didnt manage to finish up the entire thing.

Rakuichi 13

Rakuichi 14

Dessert was just fresh fruits but it was beautifully decorated on top a bowl of crushed ice. There was some vanilla ice cream in the strawberries as well.

Heaven’s Loft: Heaven begins with desserts

DSC00854com

I readily agreed to my friend’s suggestion of having dinner at Heaven’s Loft since I had not been there before and the name piqued my curiosity.

DSC00828com

So up up up we went to Heaven…’s Loft. Yeah it is located on the top most level of Orchard Central. Surprise surprise.

DSC00844com

All along I have been eating the usual kind of pasta and spaghetti, so when I saw the words “angel hair” I was naturally curious. Yes I’m a very curious being.

DSC00838com

The Seafood Angel Hair ($24.90) was made up of tempura prawns, mussels and scallops in marinara sauce. Normally I’d prefer cream based pasta because I do not really fancy sourish food. But this is good. The consistency of the sauce is just right, not too watery and not too dry. The ingredients are also very fresh. One thing which disappointed me the most was the tempura prawns. They looked like small prawn fritters to me ๐Ÿ™

DSC00841com

My friend had the Salmon with Sundried Tomato ($23.90). Not sure how it tasted like but it sure looked normal to me. I think it’s a total rip-off for a small piece of salmon.

DSC00825com

You cant get away without desserts over here! They have a separate dessert menu and serve a wide range of desserts!

DSC00848com

We shared the Pear Temptation ($14.90) which is pear and almond cream wrapped in crispy puff pastry served warm with Ben & Jerry’s strawberry ice cream. Ooh! One bite and we went to heaven!

DSC00849com

DSC00853com

The puff pastry had a texture which was similar to that of a strudel. It wasnt sweet enough on its own so this is where the ice cream comes in. ๐Ÿ™‚

My next visit to Heaven’s Loft would definitely be to try more of their desserts!

Total bill for 2 was about $80 (inclusive of drinks) after GST.

Tatsu Sushi: Is it worth the (over)price?

DSC00091com

I can never get sick of Japanese food but the birthday girl is an even more ardent fan than anyone else I can think of. We decided to check out Tatsu Sushi because it looked like a place that serves authentic Japanese food. In the meantime, you might wanna ask yourself what exactly is authentic Japanese food. ๐Ÿ˜‰

DSC00080com

We looked through the menu from the first page to the last quite a few times and couldn’t decide what to get! I don’t remember seeing any pictures and so we randomly chose a few dishes.

DSC00046com

Otoshi ($2) is served even if you do not order it, but it is not free. It is a starter also referred to as “tsukidashi”. Otoshi varies depending on the restaurant and season. Common food tends to be served, but you never know what you will get. Our otoshi came in the form of mashed potato with strips of crabmeat and bits of flying fish roe. It was slightly sweet and I liked it.

DSC00048com

I don’t remember why we ordered the Unagi Kabayaki ($20) but it probably was just random. ๐Ÿ˜› The sweet soy sauce base had the right amount of sweetness and the unagi was grilled in such a way that its firmness was retained.

DSC00050com

While the seaweed was wrapped within the rice for the Tempura Maki ($15), the Kani Maki ($15) had seaweed on its exterior. Personally, I preferred the latter because it was crunchier. ๐Ÿ™‚

DSC00054com

DSC00062com

The Uramaki ($15) served here is slightly bigger in size. For those who prefer to eat it whole in one mouthful, you really gotta have a big mouth ๐Ÿ˜› One thing I like about the sushi here is that the rice is not scattered so when you eat it, it really feels like you are eating something substantial.

DSC00055com

Sushi Jyou ($35) features a variety of raw fish on individual slabs of rice and we each had to quickly ‘chope’ the ones that we wanted ๐Ÿ˜› The slices of fish were thick and fresh. But I feel that it is slightly overpriced.

DSC00061com

The waitress recommended the Aji Fried ($28) and asked if we wanted to try it. Basically it’s Japanese horse mackeral that is deep fried. Anything that’s deep fried tastes the same to me. We really shouldn’t have ordered this. Two of my friends liked it though.

Tatsu Sushi certainly serves quality sushi but given that kinda price, I think I would try out some other Japanese restaurants in future.
