3 years ago when we first met, misterchewy declared that Marutama Ramen, or “basketball ramen” as he affectionally calls it, is his favorite ramen place in Singapore. But he wanted to try the pork cheek ramen at Santouka because I was pretty sure that Santouka would win Marutama hands down (even though I have not tried the latter back then). And recently, after the Cadbury event, I felt game enough to move out of my comfort zone and give Marutama a try so we headed down to The Central at Clarke Quay! 🙂
As we were waiting in line, I kept asking misterchewy, “Last time you said very nice one. You sure or not? You sure ah?” All of a sudden, he didn’t look as confident as he was 3 years back and said that Santouka is better. LOL. I think he didn’t want to ‘tio meh’ if I found the ramen disappointing. Hahaha.
The menu is very simple, with only about 4 or 5 ramen choices. But since it was my first time here, I was poring over the menu because a wrong choice would mean a first and last visit at Marutama. Simply put, it could either make my day or break misterchewy’s neck. Lololol. Anyway, I was kinda shocked to find out that Marutama serves chicken broth instead of tonkotsu broth! I was already thinking to myself, “Huh! Chicken broth nice meh?!”
The husband surprised me with his choice of Nama Karashi Ramen ($12) because the soup base is spicy. He doesn’t usually go for spicy options. Yup don’t be deceived by what you see in the photo. I tried a sip and while it is not chokingly spicy, it has quite a heavy garlicy taste which I find a little overwhelming for me. There is only one slice of charsiew which I find is thick and substantial. Not too tough and with a little bit of fat.
Fantastic Hakata style ramen which is thin and springy, just the way I like my ramen to be! Perfect! 😀 Noodles can be refilled at $2 but remember to leave some soup for that.
As misterchewy’s ramen doesn’t come with an egg, he ordered the Tamago Egg ($1.50) which is really damn good I tell you. One of the best I have eaten so far. It’s awesome possum compared to my hard boiled egg in the background. Pathetic~
When I took my first sip of Shoyu Ramen ($14), I almost didn’t believe it could be so tasty. I exclaimed, “Wow! I really like this!” Very flavorsome and it’s lighter plus less oily than that of a tonkotsu broth. I was happily slurping the soup away, while telling myself that I will definitely be back for the same thing soon 🙂 I thought I might have heard misterchewy heave a sigh of relief.
