Takumi Tokyo: Romantic First Year Wedding Anniversary Dinner

9th September

Hello all! This is misterchewy blogging about his birthday and first year wedding anniversary celebration with missuschewy on 9th September. The above was shot on an iPhone by Jenny Sun, the same photographer who took engagement and wedding shots for Jayesslee’s Sonia and her husband Andy. It’s such a coincidence the Jayesslee twins and I were born on 9 September, in the same year! 0909 is a nice date because it means 长长久久 which is why we tied the knot on my birthday last year 🙂

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 003

Rewind a few weeks earlier, we met up with the other foodies and caught Jiro Dreams of Sushi at VivoCity. The fantastic cinematograph totally whetted my appetite for some sushi and sashimi! Had been searching high and low for quality Japanese food for weeks. As a surprise, the wifey promptly made reservations at Takumi Tokyo Restaurant, located at the laid-back Keppel Bay. Come to think of it, she brought me here for an advanced mini birthday celebration at Prive two years ago!

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 009

Walking is our favorite mode of transportation when missuschewy isn’t wearing heels 😛 We were around town area and chose to take a leisurely stroll in after alighting at Harbourfront MRT Station. A stroll soon turned into brisk walking as we were famished!

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 017

I might not express it but I was excited and looking forward to the dinner. My wife certainly knows how to make me happy and excited. -gasps- Stop letting your mind wonder. A woman who knows the way to her man’s stomach will tie him down automatically. HAHA.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 018

I think it was missuschewy’s first time wearing such a long dress to go paktor with me. So pretty lor 😛

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 090

Our stomachs could not take it anymore and we finally continued making our way to the restaurant which is located on level 2. Turn left upon exiting the lift and you will find Takumi Tokyo after passing by TCC.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 083

Takumi Restaurant is said to be a fine-dining restaurant with interiors that create an ambience that complements the food and service for an authentic and unpretentious Japanese dining experience. It has a number of awards under its belt, such as Best Restaurant 2010, Singapore Tatler and Top 3 Japanese Restaurants, Singapore Press Holdings.

Gosh! We were so hungry when we reached the restaurant. Didn’t know whether to go for the set menu or select ala carte dishes. In the end, we decided to go for a bit of everything from the ala carte menu. Apparently, Takumi Tokyo specializes in robatayaki and teppanyaki.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 032

Shortly after placing our order, We were served Otoshi ($6), which we mistook as a complimentary appetizer.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 034

We were pleasantly surprised when we ate the Pan Seared Foie Gras with Plum Wine Jelly ($35). The radish was sweet while the foie gras was nicely crisp on the outside and melt-in-the-mouth.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 036

Like what missuschewy said on Instagram when she posted the picture: “Foie Gras so good I could have died and gone to heaven”. Yeah it was THAT good.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 040

The Australian Kurobuta Pork Yuzu Pepper Sauce 120g ($30) came thinly sliced and was quite flavorful but we would prefer it to be more tender.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 042

We wanted to order sashimi and Chirashi Sushi $38 but the restaurant manager advised us to go for either since both are highly similar, except that the latter comes with rice. There was quite a variety of raw fish and everything came in two slices, except for the prawn. Very value-for-money!

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 050-horz

We love sea urchin but the Hokkaido Scallops topped with Sea Urchin, Paprika Sauce ($28) didn’t wow us. The slightly sourish taste did not seem to fit in this dish.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 059

Although the Grilled Lamb Rack Marinated with Apple Miso Sauce $25 was a bit salty, it was very tasty and was more tender than the Australian kurobuta pork.

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 067

We felt so shiok from eating the chirashi sushi that we decided to order the Assorted Sushi ($35) halfway through eating! The menu states that this features 7 pieces and 1 roll but it seems like we got an extra piece. Shiok! 😀

First Year Wedding Anniversary_Misterchewy Birthday 071

The chef deep-fried the prawn head from our chirashi sushi for us. Very crispy!

To my dear wife, thanks for putting in lots of effort to plan for my birthday and our anniversary. Can’t wait for part two updates! 😛 I really love the watch that you shipped over for me as birthday present and I will treasure it for a long long time. 🙂 在爱的幸福国度,你就是我唯一。我唯一爱的就是你。

Gardens by the Bay: Dining at Pollen & Strolling at Flower Dome

_MG_7225-001

Ever since Pollen at Gardens by the Bay was first featured on the Sunday edition of The Straits Times, I had been hinting widely to misterchewy that yours truly was dying to go there. The boy got my ‘hint’ and arranged to treat me to a pre-birthday lunch! Well, if he didn’t get my big hint, he’s gonna get a hard knock on his head. LOL just kidding~ 😛

Flower Dome 003

The hubby had everything well-planned and we took a cab to Gardens by the Bay after checking out of Wanderlust Hotel. He made reservations for lunch a few days in advance and we had a buggy to pick us up at the entrance. It sure was a long way in! Super excited while we were on the buggy! 😀

_MG_7321

I think with all the hype going on, Pollen probably doesn’t need any more introduction from this humble blog. Ok but anyways, for the benefit of those who don’t already know, Pollen is the sister restaurant to Michelin-starred British chef Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social in London. Pollen sets itself to be a fine dining concept in Singapore which serves mainly Mediterranean-inspired modern European cuisine in casual ambience surrounded by temperate olive trees, herbs and vegetation. Do you know that every morning, the chefs at Pollen pick fresh herbs and vegetables from their own herb garden as ingredients for the dishes? 😀

_MG_7221-001

Fine dining is just not my cup of tea. I prefer a casual and relaxed dining atmosphere. Being tensed doesn’t allow me to enjoy my food, and the hefty price tag that comes with it would not be justifiable, no matter how mind-blowing the food is. This is my personal opinion of course. What about Pollen then? I would say that dining in a picturesque setting is a totally different experience all together! It’s kinda like alfresco dining in a majestic glass dome surrounded by beautiful flowers and greenery in this case! Like Alice in Wonderland at a Mad Hatter Tea Party! I don’t think it’s something you can easily get elsewhere 😉

_MG_7191-001

Thanks to the hubby for doting on me! Hehehe! 😛

_MG_7198-001

Typical things that ‘tourists’ do. Just felt that I had to pose for a photo with Pollen’s menu. LOL.

_MG_7195-001

_MG_7200-001

Interestingly, the couple next to us was also celebrating the girl’s birthday! I’m not a stalker la but here’s her blog post! I was quite sure that she had to be at least a blogger, if not food blogger because her bf/husband remarked that he would have whatever she wasn’t planning to have. Hahaha! Guess what happened? All four of us had the Set Lunch ($55++). Both guys ordered exactly the same dishes and us ladies ate exactly the same too! Yup the starter, mains and desserts. Homaigawd.

_MG_7189-001

_MG_7203-001

_MG_7210-001

_MG_7216-001

I picked the Petunia Ocean Trout as my starter, which instantly reminded us of the citrus marinated salmon that we had at Pamplemousse. Served with oyster mayonnaise and pickled onion, this dish was faultless. I loved the presentation! Such a pretty flower 🙂

_MG_7208-001

_MG_7220-001

For someone who generally prefers strong flavors, misterchewy seemed quite happy with his Slow Cooked Eggs with Patata Bravas. The fried potato cubes and crispy slices of chorizo went quite well with the spicy tomato sauce. Plus biting into the egg was sheer delight, as can be seen from the hubby’s facial expressions.

_MG_7235-001

You should be able to estimate the size of the Roasted Pork Belly if you compare it against the size of the beans. Heh. Yeah set lunch mah, whaddaya expect? 😛 The pork belly was really good, very tender with a slightly chewy bite. And if I didn’t remember wrongly, the cut was actually quite lean.

_MG_7231-001

My John Dory was unexceptional, nothing to shout about. The seafood bisque veloute was way too salty but I finished it up nevertheless.

_MG_7255-001

Isn’t misterchewy’s dessert choice of Coconut Mousse, Rhubarb Broth, Goat Cheese Ice Cream prettaaaay? The sweet coconut mousse complemented the sourish rhubarb perfectly and the goat cheese ice cream though subtle, could be an acquired taste. We liked it very much! 🙂

_MG_7248-001

_MG_7252-001

My Beetroot Sorbet with Chocolate Mousse was served on a rock. Yes a ROCK! Haha. The waiter told us that a few customers actually asked if the rock is also part of the dessert and whether it can be eaten. Lololol. A rather refreshing mix of tart and sweet flavors in this one. The eating experience was a fun one though, trying to lick the rock clean. Heh.

_MG_7241

A birthday gift from Pollen! Very exquisite chocolate! I have never tasted anything like this before 😀

_MG_7258-001

Since misterchewy made reservations at Pollen, the entrance fee to Flower Dome was waived. This made our lunch at Pollen a rather good deal considering that we saved $12 per person on the admission fee 😛

_MG_7265-001

There is a lift within Pollen and we were shown up to the Flower Dome. Good thing we were there on a Monday because there wasn’t much of a crowd. But I made a wrong decision of not bringing my camera charger to charge my DSLR during the staycation 🙁 Camera was running on low battery thus some of the shots that you see later on were taken with the hubby’s Canon IXUS.

Flower Dome 011

Taking a stroll at Flower Dome is a very cool affair! Hahaha no pun intended. It is a very nice feeling to have the sun shining down on you but in a cool and moist climate. Almost feels like experiencing winter in a foreign country! 😀

Flower Dome 059

Our Chewy tofu oyako – John and Sally! Long time no see right? 😛 Ok shall let the photos do the talking!

The Chewys’ Sweet Date @ Fullhouse Singapore Theme Cafe!

Fullhouse Cafe

Wow! What can I say? Both misterchewy and I are equally excited about relating our very first theme restaurant dining experience at Fullhouse Singapore Lifestyle Store and Cafe! With its grand opening that occurred as recent as mid April, Fullhouse is Singapore’s latest theme restaurant that has attracted many locals and created quite a buzz at the same time! 😀

_MG_3868

There were a couple of occasions when we would skip down the streets of Orchard Road hand in hand and pass by this colorful restaurant but we never went in because we already have other plans.

_MG_3810

Just a couple of days ago, after watching The Avengers in 3D at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, it was time for dinner and we were thinking.. Should we? Yes we should! So dinner at Fullhouse it was! 🙂

_MG_3840

_MG_3800

When I first heard of the name “Fullhouse”, popular Korean drama starring Rain and Song Hye Kyo immediately came to mind! As you will see in the many pictures to come, Fullhouse is designed to look like a house! Duh, yes I know but this one’s totally awesome! Let me bring you on a mini tour. You’ll see! 😛

Daddy Thomas, Mummy Tracy, children Tiffani and Tony, as well as pet dog Toy make up the Fullhouse family! If you’re serious about this, you should grab one of these maps at the counter! 😉

_MG_3843

Tadah! We have the very cosy and spacious Living Room! I love the colorful family portraits that are hung up on the wall. Ok la, I love everything about this ‘living room’, in particular the warm feeling that it brings! 😀

_MG_3813

_MG_3816

Keen to see how the Master Bedroom looks like? I reckon it’s every girl’s dream come true! The bedroom is a walk in wardrobe, and so much more!

_MG_3817

Psst.. Most of the items in the bedroom are for sale! You can even try the clothes on in the fitting room 🙂

_MG_3815

Are you Goldilocks? If you’re not, then you better don’t be like the three naughty bears and anyhow sleep on people’s bed ah! LOL.

_MG_3824

Wheeeee! Now this, ladies and gentlemen, is the Balcony! I must say that this is very lovely! Well, the green ‘grass’ can only make me think of playing golf. LOL.

_MG_3842

Actually, there are Entertainment Room and Study Rooms which we did not manage to cover in this post because those rooms are meant for events and private dining. There was a birthday celebrating going on in one of the rooms so I suppose this place is pretty well sought after!

_MG_3799

Ok let’s get back to our dinner!

_MG_3781

We ordered an appetizer, the Salmon Salad ($16.90) to share. On the plate was three thick slices of smoked salmon with sliced fresh mango and salad. The salmon slices were very firm and fleshy and I really liked the intensive smoked taste. Hubby Chewy let me have two slices but two were never enough 😛 He doesn’t usually eat mangoes but he ate most of it anyway. It was more sweet than sourish so I guess that was the reason 🙂

_MG_3777

_MG_3796

I wanted something sweet, yet ummm healthy at the same time so I chose the Korean Jujube Tea ($3.90). It’s essentially sweetened tea syrup containing jujube fruits or red dates. There were some red dates peelings which I was able to chew on at the bottom of my glass. Quite a sweet and refreshing drink that I would recommend 🙂

_MG_3785

Fullhouse’s menu is quite extensive and I went “I want this.. No wait I think I want this..” before finally deciding on the Pan Sear Dory Fish ($16.90). It wasn’t such a bad choice except that the sight of siew pak choy (xiao bai cai) totally put me off. I love my greens but this is the only vegetable that I detest. However, I gamely finished the two fat pieces of siew pak choy because I don’t like to waste food. Apart from that, the fish was above my expectations. I would say that the lemongrass cream was fantastic and enhanced the taste and texture of the fish.

_MG_3775

_MG_3793

Hubby Chewy also has a sweet tooth just like me, which is why we fell for each other. Because we are incredibly sweet! LOL kidding! Ok la which is why he ordered the Honeydew Milkshake ($7.90). He liked it a lot but honestly, I think it’s like a more atas version of a bubble tea.

_MG_3791

The husband had the Wasabi Fish and Wedges ($16.90). He claimed that the deep fried fish fillet was pretty tasteless and the wasabi dip salvaged things a little, although it did not provide much of a kick.

_MG_3805

While we were sipping our drinks, I took a closer look at the menu.

_MG_3806

There’s a comic section on the last few pages. Really cool stuff! I guess it’s a way for to keep diners entertained while waiting for their food to be served.

_MG_3827

_MG_3849

_MG_3858

This vintage Aston Martin Mini Cooper Classic is parked at the Car Porch and no visit to Fullhouse is complete without having your photos taken with this colorful baby! 🙂

_MG_3859

_MG_3867

_MG_3855

Hubby Chewy and I would certainly recommend Fullhouse Lifestyle Store and Cafe to all dating, courting and married couples! Of course, it’s also great for girly meetups! Enjoy your sweet date and take lotsa photos! <3

Spending Our First Valentine’s Day as Mr & Mrs Chew!

_MG_1123

And so, the sweet boy and I spent our second Valentine’s Day together. Last year as boyfriend and girlfriend, and this is our first year spending Valentine’s Day together as hubby and wifey. He gave me a nice surprise on the day before Valentine’s Day too! Don’t we girls love surprises, especially during special occasions like this! 😀 Hubby Chewy picked me up from work and I made use of the opportunity to get him carry home the remaining two bottles of wine (I lugged one back last week) from the hamper prize that I won. He pointed at my heels, “Do you wanna go home first to change into something more comfortable then we head out for dinner?” I was like, “Ok! These things are too heavy anyway.” When we got out of the lift, I made a casual remark that I wanna wash my feet before we head out. Ok this might sound pointless to some but it’s a habit of mine that I have to wash my feet when I return home. Hubby said, “Ok then I wait for you outside.” I proceeded to unlock the door and that was when I saw the bouquet of bears, card and chocolates on the table. At first, I thought my dad wanted to play the old romantic and surprise my mum. My second thought was that my mum wanted to play a prank on me! I inched forward and squinted at the card.

_MG_1131

The card was addressed to me and signed off by Hubby Chewy. Yours truly screamed, “OH MY GAWD!” upon realizing that the boy was sneaky enough to plan and execute this surprise while I was at work. Hurhur. I bet Hubby Chewy was grinning and thinking, “Gotcha!” Anyway I think my response was really epic. What kinda response was that?! >_<

_MG_1129

I think the chocolates impressed me the most! I mean if it was just the bouquet and the card, it would have looked less remarkable. Seriously! 😛

Vday 004

Wanted to display this (read: NOT show off) in office but it’s really too huge and will probably take up an entire shelf space! D:

_MG_1145

I’m very touched by Hubby Chewy’s effort. Chanel 2.55 next year okay, hubby? 😀

_MG_1178

Call me kiasu but I was the one who made reservations at Da Paolo Ristorane about a month ago. I decided to be initiative about it since misterchewy has been pretty bogged down by work. And I really didn’t want to put things till the very last minute. All the Da Paolo restaurants offer different set menus and we decided to go ahead with the one at Chip Bee Gardens. Checked with misterchewy and he was alright with settling for Da Paolo’s Valentine’s Day Set Menu at $128 per person, which includes a glass of Prosecco.

_MG_1181

Yours truly went the extra mile by applying red hot lipstick and wearing falsies just for the special date. Hehe! 😛

_MG_1159-tile

_MG_1179

_MG_1164

_MG_1167

Our starter of Atlantic Scallops, Carrot and Tangerine Sauce, Passion Fruit, Celery turned out to be a true delight. The thick, creamy sauce was really brilliant!

_MG_1175

_MG_1170

We had a middle course of Spinach Carnaroli Risotto with King Prawns in Brandy Sauce. I loveeeee risotto and it had been ages since I last ate it. Hubby Chewy and I both agreed that the risotto was firm to the bite but the creaminess was kind of overwhelming towards the end.

_MG_1191

I chose the Grouper Fillet with Asparagus & Herbed Potatoes in Hollandaise sauce as my main course. Felt that the fish was a tad dry.

_MG_1193

The husband was quite satisfied with his Braised Lamb Shoulder, which he marvelled to be very tender.

_MG_1201

_MG_1204

_MG_1205

Strawberry Tiramisu with White Chocolate! This was the best out of all the courses, no kidding! 😛 Light, creamy, luscious and heavenly.

_MG_1196

_MG_1198

_MG_1209

“What?! You want me to finish this piece of strawberry?!”

_MG_1215

“I don’t like strawberry.. Can I not eat it pleeeeease?”

_MG_1212

“Boohoohoo.. I really don’t wanna eat it.. I don’t like..”

_MG_1216

Ok I forced misterchewy to finish up the strawberry that was lying on his plate! *evil laughter*

_MG_1217

_MG_1218

_MG_1223

Thank you for the nice dinner treat, Hubby Chewy! 😀 If you ask me, I think it’s ok to be a little more extravagant on special occasions. Yes I agree that Valentine’s Day is very commercialized but I’m not bothered by this fact 😛

_MG_1253

_MG_1229

_MG_1230

_MG_1232

_MG_1234

The boy left a message on my Facebook wall:

Romance Your Valentine at KU DÉ TA

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting

Want to impress that special date on Valentine’s Day? Make the lady feel on top of the world by taking her 57 storeys high up Marina Bay Sands. Dining in KU DÉ TA Restaurant is an upbeat affair where the view, food, wine and music are best enjoyed with good company. There is nothing more romantic than dining under the stars as you clink your wine glasses and whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ears while enjoying the panoramic view of the city’s skyline..

misterchewy & missuschewy

Hubby Chewy and I had the honour of sampling KU DÉ TA’s Valentine’s Set Menu ($148++ per person, minimum 2 to dine). This menu is available from 10 – 19 February 2012 during lunch and dinner and during dinner time on 14th February, all ladies will receive a stalk of rose. We were seated at the alfresco dining area, which was regrettably cold but the wait staff promptly offered me a black shawl to wrap myself with. The shawl is now sitting in my office 🙂

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 016

Our dinner started off with a soup and this is by no means an ordinary hot soup. The Momotaro & Shinremei Gazpacho was served cold, in a shot glass, which I mistook for a sweet drink. Give it a good stir, and you will agree that this tomato-based soup with avocado and rice vinegar is actually quite rejuvenating!

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 018_

Without a doubt, the Mizuna & Kurobuta Pork Warm Salad is our favorite starter. We were impressed by how the kurobuta pork was so perfectly done! Tender and juicy on the inside, crusty on the outside.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 022

You need not be worried about being put off by the raw taste of oysters as the Tempura Style Sydney Rock Oysters have been lightly battered and goes well with the wasabi aioli, which thankfully was not very potent.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 024

Next came the Langoustine & Jackfruit Tartar with Marinated Ikura & Curried Bread which I must say, was quite unusual in terms of its presentation . In terms of taste, it’s like lobster or prawn with mango salad with a twist. I enjoyed every bit of this dish.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 026

I believe that the Amberjack Ceviche had been marinated in lemon or lime before being topped with roasted garlic, capsicum and red onion. I liked the citrusy marination and firm texture of the fish.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 027

The Grilled Asparagus Spears probably looks ordinary but with the egg yolk, cured salmon, limon cress this dish was savoury and creamy, which was absolutely heavenly!

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 036

Although the Seared Hokkaido Scallops were drizzled in chorizo oil and mint, it tasted pretty unexceptional. At least the scallops were firm and succulent.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 039_

Hubby Chewy and I relished every bite of the Roast Black Cod Loin which had been marinated with thai basil, lemongrass and turmeric. Something light, yet substantial.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 030

I’m quite sure that the Slow Cooked Duck Leg is misterchewy’s favorite for the night. Prior to our visit, the chef had received feedback about the duck being dry and tough. All I can say is that the duck was flavorful and fork tender. Don’t forget to pair it with a glass of red wine!

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 044_

It is a pity that the Braised Puy Lentils is our least favorite dish. Not sure if it’s an acquired taste but we liked neither the taste nor the texture of this one.

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 049

As usual, I’m always looking forward to desserts and was thrilled to see this plate of Sesame and Basil Benova with Sub Zero Raspberry & Sauvignon Jello, but I can’t say the same for misterchewy as he doesn’t like raspberries. I urged him to give it a try and he gamely finished everything. There is a good mix of tart, sweet and savoury in this exquisite dessert and my favorite was the sauvignon jello!

Bastien Charles 2

The man behind the desserts is KU DÉ TA’s pastry chef, Jerry Bastien Charles, who has worked in several esteemed establishments all over the world. Bastien chose to become a pastry chef because he feels that, “Women prefer men who smell of sugar than men who smell of fish.” I cannot agree more!

Ku De Ta Valentine's Day Tasting 057

I honestly feel that KU DÉ TA is offering an extremely good deal here after having compared the Valentine’s Day set menu prices of various restaurants. The perfect scenery of the city at night is definitely another plus factor which will wow your date and you can always proceed to the bar for a couple of drinks after dinner! 🙂

The Chewys at ku de ta

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! 😀
The Chewys would like to thank Pei Rong and KU DÉ TA for the invitation.
