GRUB Singapore Food Review

Tasting Invite

IMG_1911

Ever since I became a mum, I have learned to treasure pockets of free time for myself. Really grateful that both our parents are more than happy to help us take care of the little one so that we can have a quiet dinner together on weekdays after misterchewy comes back from work or a whole day out on weekends. Sometimes, it’s also very difficult to agree to invites because I need to factor in my pumping schedule and 1001 other things. Mehhhhh. And it’s no joke having to lug so many things around without hubby’s help!

_MG_1910

I was invited to try GRUB’s lunch menu on a Saturday and knowing that misterchewy had always wanted to sink his teeth into GRUB’s famous fish burger, I readily accepted and we left Chanelle at home! LOL 😛 We have been putting this aside for the longest time because of its location. However, I have come to realise that it’s actually quite nice to house a bistro at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park as it creates a very fun and family-friendly dining environment.

_MG_1908

GRUB is opened by the guys who founded Cookyn Inc and they place a strong emphasis on food that is responsible, inspired and delicious – basically, food that they serve their own families. I would also like to share that the food is reasonably priced and very friendly to the wallet. I didn’t find anything that costs more than $20 on the menu (subject to GST)!

_MG_1883

Both the Yuzu Mint Soda ($4.50) and Iced Honey Lime Juice ($3) are perfect thirst quenchers on a hot and sunny day. You can also find pure fruit juices and other canned drinks on the menu.

_MG_1882

Step aside, truffle fries! Mentaiko Fries ($9) are here to blow everyone away! Who would have thought that mentaiko aioli and fries could go so well together? The thinly shredded pieces of nori seaweed also made this yummy appetizer a whole lot more palatable and addictive. I just couldn’t stop munching on them!

_MG_1897

If you have always enjoyed your toast with half boiled egg, it’s time to give the Truffled Egg Cocotte ($7) at GRUB a try! The taste of truffle is a little overwhelming but hey, I’m certainly not complaining. However, I thought there could be a better option other than toasted focaccia as it kinda failed to soak up the egg cocotte.

_MG_1887

Only available for brunch, the French Toast ($12) is a delicious winning combination of sweet and savory. The garlic thyme pork sausage was big and juicy, and tasted wonderful with strawberries, sour cream and maple syrup. It is the perfect breakfast that I imagine myself having everyday.

_MG_1889

GRUB is famous for its Crispy Fish Burger ($14); everyone is singing praises for it! Only sustainable fish caught in waters free from contamination is used and it tastes fresh and moist under that beautiful golden brown crispy layer. GRUB pays a lot of attention in serving only the best. Even the burger buns are specially brought in from a local bakery which are fluffy and have a soft doughy texture.

_MG_1891

The hubs and I don’t eat beef but we do know that GRUB uses beef that is 100% grass fed and free-range so you can feast on your GRUB Double Cheeseburger ($18) in peace!

_MG_1894

We also tried two other dishes which are new on the menu. The Sakura Ebi Pasta ($17) is available for lunch and dinner only. Interestingly, it tastes like prawn mee dry with a twist. The tiny bits of fried Sakura ebi and mentaiko sauce gave this dish an extra fragrance and sweetness.

_MG_1896

I really love the Slow Cooked Pork Belly ($17)! Sous vide and seared, it’s so tender and succulent and does not have that overwhelming porky smell, probably because the pigs are being fed a local feed of barley, wheat and mountain mineral water. The pork belly is paired sauteed leeks and sweet potato mash which I found unique but proved to be a winner. This dish is only available during dinner.

_MG_1902

Finally, for something sweet, we had the Chocolate Kladkakka ($8) which I found impossible to fault. What could possibly go wrong with creamy vanilla gelato, moist and crumbly sticky chocolate cake, and strawberry sauce? It’s the kind of dessert that people of all ages will love!

_MG_1904

The Churros ($9) at GRUB are not bad and we all know that it’s so hard to find good ones in Singapore. Glad to know that the churros here are hand made, which explains why they come in various lengths. The churros are quite fluffy on the inside but a little stiff on the outside. On the overall, they still tasted quite good when dipped into the dark chocolate sauce.

UltimateGrubber

GRUB is running an #UltimateGrubber photo contest for the month of May. Diners just have to submit their favourite shot taken at GRUB (any photos taken at 2013 and 2014 are welcome) to take part in this contest. Simply upload your photo here: http://bit.ly/1nOmelS and win attractive prizes!

Valentine’s Day 2014 @ Tamashii Robataya

1497280_10152224857948748_82056681_n

So glad that Valentine’s Day fell on a Friday this year! I applied for leave, but not really because it’s V Day la. Went for my weekly checkup at Mount E and was told by my gynae to rest more because both mother and baby didn’t gain any weight for the past week. I admit that my schedule is getting more hectic as I’m getting close to my EDD but it feels good to be moving around because I really think it’s not good to be sedentary. The long weekend was a very fulfilling one for misterchewy and I because we accomplished quite a few tasks, albeit being very last minute as usual! And the photo you see above? We will definitely blog about it soon! 🙂

IMG_1058

The husband had actually shortlisted a few places for our Valentine’s Day dinner and I was told to choose one that I like best. OMG all of them are Italian restaurants! Ok la more romantic but I was craving for Japanese food and suggested Tamashii Robataya because I had read some pretty good reviews. Reservations were made and we were there before 7pm. Was trying to decide between the omakase or set dinner and we agreed on the $128++ set dinner. If you have any dietary restrictions, feel free to let them know and they will have the particular dish replaced with something else of similar value.

_MG_1016

The Sashimi Moriwase is originally on the menu, which was only enjoyed by misterchewy. So sad that I could only watch him eat this. LOL.

Appetizer

Instead of sashimi, I was being served three types of appetizers in small portions.

Grilled assorted veg

I liked the grilled eggplant best from the Yaki Yasai Moriwase.

_MG_1029

After having small servings of the first few dishes, we were surprised that the Yaki Sakana was about the size of my palm. Before that, we were thinking how were we ever going to get full at this rate. Haha. The fish was grilled to perfection and was very juicy!

_MG_1036

I’m gonna say yes if anyone’s gonna ask me if we will revisit Tamashii, thanks to the Pork Cheeks Donburi which was very fabulous. Explosive flavors with every mouuthful! Will be back for this!

_MG_1039

Didnt really like the Asari Osui because the broth was too salty for me.

_MG_1051

Dessert of the day was Pumpkin Ice Cream on Pumpkin Cake which was pretty refreshing. The pumpkin cake tasted a little like caramel pudding though.

_MG_1046

Counting down to my EDD! Excited! Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

Happy Avenue Cupcakes and Online Bakery

Sponsored Review

_MG_9168

I have a soft spot for all things sweet and was delighted when Judy Then from Happy Avenue asked if I would like to try some of her bakes. Naturally, I said YES! Officially launched in February 2013, Happy Avenue’s baked goods are handmade from scratch, crafted with premium natural ingredients and do not contain any preservatives.

Happy Avenue-32

Judy actually seemed like she has a wealth of experience, judging from the wide variety of cupcakes, kueh lapis, cookies and brownies that got her customers raving about and coming back for more. I honestly find it hard to believe that Judy started baking only in July 2012 but she has sold more than 10000 cupcakes to date! It all began when she sold cupcakes to help raise funds for a needy family. The fund-raising was a success and orders continued streaming in. That was when Judy decided to pursue her love for baking by taking up professional baking and frosting courses and eventually setting up Happy Avenue online.

_MG_9175

We got to sample an assortment of 7 different flavors in the box of 12 cupcakes – Signature Valrhona Triple Dark (best seller), Vanilla Lemon Cream, Red Velvet, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brazilian Coffee and Vanilla Strawberry. The husband and I loved the Signature Valrhona Triple Dark, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Chocolate Brazilian Coffee best. The rest of the flavors were equally amazing too but we just cannot live without chocolate 😛 Judy’s cupcakes were really fluffy and moist, which were best enjoyed with a pot of hot green tea.

Mixed flavours box :
9 regulars $33.50
12 regulars $44.00
9 minis $29.00
20 minis $62.00

Single flavor box :
9 regulars $30.00
12 regulars $40.00
9 minis $27.00
20 minis $60.00

Customisations :
– Cream tinting FOC
– Toppers $1.00 per pc
– Fondant $1.50 per pc
– Box+Ribbon+Tag $1.50 per set

_MG_9242

Judy really has a knack for baking. Those who have tried baking kueh lapis will know that it’s not easy, yet Judy does it marvellously well! Our mixed flavors box contained 3 out of 4 available flavors – Plain, Prune, Signature Nutella and Chocolate Chip. Haha misterchewy and I actually polished the entire box in one night during our staycation! 😛 I can’t decide if I prefer Prune or Nutella. All I knew was that we were busy chomping down slice after slice because they were really addictive! Who cares about dieting?!

Signature Nutella
1.4kg $60
700g $35

Prune, choc chip and plain
1.2kg $55
600g $30

_MG_9196

Due to overwhelming orders, loose sales of cupcakes are not available until April 2014 and will need 1-2 months notice if ordering an array of flavours.

Bulk orders require a min of 50 pcs. Feel free to contact the friendly and jovial baker as she would be able to advise you based on your requirements and budget.

Islandwide delivery at $20 per location excluding offshore and Tuas.

Ming Kitchen Brings Precious Treasures for a Prosperous 2014

Invited Tasting

_MG_0971

Unilever Food Solutions (UFS), one of the world’s top food service companies, provides professional ingredients and services to meet the needs of F&B businesses – from hawker centres to 5-star hotels across Singapore.

_MG_0976

UFS is proud to be working together with restaurants to raise awareness of their new dishes. This is especially so with the Zhi Char restaurants who have recently gone into creating innovative dishes for their diners without compromising on flavour and flair. It’s through UFS, fast-paced chefs are given an avenue to be creative and the ability to come up with new and exciting dishes that would get diners come back for more. On top of the usual seasonings/ bouillons/ stock bases that are currently used in zhi char kitchens for Chinese cuisines, i.e. Knorr Concentrated Chicken/ Scallop Bouillon and Knorr Chicken Seasoning Powder, UFS also sells to these restaurants notably Knorr Mashed Potato.

_MG_0980

One of the restaurant group partners UFS is working with is Chang Cheng Group. Ming Kitchen, the zhi char chain under the group, with a string of 32 outlets, have prepared a treat for their 2014 Chinese New Year Menu where diners will be able to fill their tummies for a prosperous ‘Horse’ year in 2014.

_MG_0970

Dried Oyster stuffed in Prawn Roll/黄金蚝事 (Available in set menu)

The traditional prawn roll, or more familiarly known as ‘hae-cho’, has been recreated to have mixed in dried oysters into the roll’s filling – and then coated with mashed potato flakes like how chefs usually coat cereals when preparing Cereal Prawns. The Knorr Mashed Potato mentioned earlier, is prepared from fresh potatoes and then dehydrated. Instead of adding liquids and seasoning to make it the Western Mashed Potato, Ming Kitchen stir-fried it and added spices to create a coating to wrap the 黄金蚝事. It is distinctly different from fried cereal or oatmeal and is discernible from its texture which is smooth and also has that melt-in-your-mouth sensation.

_MG_0985

Abalone Treasure Pot/鲍鱼盆菜 ($168)

The traditional festive dish where many Chinese families have during CNY boasts a slew of fresh and dried seafood such as South African Abalone, Braised Pig’s Trotters, Salted Drumstick, Fish Maw and Dried Oyster, which bodes great fortunate for the family. Chef Desmond has skilfully transformed the base stock of this traditional dish by using UFS’s chicken and scallop stock for a time-efficient prepared dish.

IMG_0989

Chinese New Year reunion set menus are priced at $138 and $198 for 6 pax, and range from $198 to $428 for 10 pax. Be the first 100 customers to order the $428 set menu and receive a prosperity gift worth $68.80.

_MG_0661

From the Auspicious Plates of Treasure menu, each of us had a bowl of warm and comforting 8 Treasure Broth, accented by sweet notes of pacific blue crab meat and yamabushitake, which was nicely balanced by savoury yunnan ham and textures of sea cucumber and flower mushroom.

_MG_0663

The Pacific Cod Blossom drizzled with Imperial mushroom broth was delectable and I particularly liked that the fish was being lightly deep fried while retaining its fleshiness within.

_MG_0669

Stuffed in an adorable-looking miniature bamboo basket, the Lotus Rice Harmony of choice abalone, dried scallop and Nagano pork belly was packed with flavor.

_MG_0673

Boasting bold flavors, the Sze Chuan Kurobuta Pork was absolutely melt-in-the-mouth tender.

Jamie’s Italian Singapore Food Review

Tasting Invite

_MG_0181

Since its official opening in July 2013, Jamie’s Italian Singapore has launched an updated menu featuring 15 new exciting dishes, while retaining some of the more popular ones with a bit of refining to suit local taste buds. When misterchewy and I were there late last year, we were quite surprised that there wasn’t a queue outside Jamie’s Italian after hearing stories of horrible two-hour long waits.

_MG_0173

Jamie’s Italian welcomes customers to utilize their online booking system for tables of 1-7 and larger groups are encouraged to call in to reserve (including reservations for our private dining area, no minimum charge). Jamie’s Italian still keep a large number of tables for walk-in customers, so customers are advised to come round even if the system tells you that the restaurant is fully booked.

_MG_0178

_MG_0174

_MG_0106

To kick-start the dinner, we had Crispy Tomato & Mozzarella Arancini ($10.90) from the Antipasti menu. Arancini means “little orange” and these rice balls originate in Campania but are at their best in Sicily. Served with arrabbiata sauce, the piping hot and crispy rice balls are filled with cheesy goodness and taste deliciously tangy and spicy at the same time. Definitely a great starter to work up an appetite.

_MG_0111

Since the Baked Mushrooms were sold out, we went for the next best alternative, Crispy Squid ($11.50) which is line caught squid honeycombed, dusted in flour, deep fried, tossed with fresh chilli and garlic chips and served with homemade mayonnaise dusted with paprika. The batter is surprisingly light and crispy, while the squid tasted juicy within. It was so good and addictive that misterchewy and I couldn’t stop popping them into our mouths!

_MG_0128

You will be glad to know that at Jamie’s Italian Singapore, pastas are freshly made round the clock. Our love for truffle prompted us to go for the Wild Truffle Risotto ($16/$24.50) which didn’t disappoint us at all. Special Acquerello rice from Italy is cooked simply with salted water, finished with truffle butter and Parmesan and garnished with truffle oil, shaved truffle, nutmeg, grated Parmesan and parsley cress. The result is a very satisfying and creamy risotto dish that is perfect beyond words. We shared this dish between the two of us but I think we could have easily polished this off alone too.

_MG_0117

After finding out that Jool’s Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli ($14/$21) is Jamie’s wife’s favorite dish when she was pregnant, I decided to try it for myself. Key ingredients such as albacore tuna, together with chilli, garlic and anchovy, are used to produce a rich tomato ragu for this classic Sicilian recipe. Both misterchewy and I adored this dish, for the fusilli had a very nice bite to it and the piquant tomato ragu really hit the spot. Accompanied with a pangrattato crunch made of breadcrumbs, garlic and fresh herbs all blended together, this really brought the dish up a notch.

_MG_0138

I have read quite a number of favorable reviews about the Baked Sustainable Halibut ($29.90) so there was no getting away without trying this one. We were also very lucky to snag the last piece! Jamie’s Italian’s halibut is sustainably fished from Norway. We like how it was so nicely pan-fried to achieve that buttery and flaky texture, which was highly similar to that of cod fish. A very clean-tasting dish on the overall.

_MG_0133

Jamie’s Italian’s pork chops come from Wooroloo, Australia, and are brined for 24 hours before they are being grilled al mattone (under a brick). We couldn’t help but feel impressed that such a big slab of Grilled Aussie Pork Chop ($38.50) could remain so evenly tender and succulent throughout. This dish is served with bagna cauda (a sauce made with bread, milk, garlic, anchovy, capers, lemon, oil and parsley), crispy crackling and a salad of kohlrabi, apple, celery leaf, mint and parsley dressed with lemon and olive oil.

_MG_0169

Moving on to desserts, we first opted for the Creamy Panna Cotta ($9). Made of cooked cream, the panna cotta is rich and dense. Felt that it was good enough on its own with a drizzle of honey because the seasonal fresh fruit compote was too tart for us to handle.

_MG_0161

Chocolate lovers do not leave without having the Epic Brownie ($11.50). Just looking at it can actually get you high. The luxurious brownie made with 70% cocoa solid chocolate was exceptionally fudgy and chewy. Served warm with amaretto ice cream, caramel popcorn and warm chocolate sauce, it was one helluva epic dessert indeed!

_MG_0160

It was our first time visiting Jamie’s Italian Singapore and both of us agreed that most of the dishes we tried that night were quite remarkable. That in itself is worthy of a revisit with more friends in the near future. Stay connected with us on Facebook www.facebook.com/missuschewy and on Instagram @missuschewy and @misterchewy 🙂

KPO Cafe Bar Singapore Food Review

DSCF0949

Over the weekend, my primary school bestie gave me my long overdue birthday treat! More than 3 months from my birthday in July! :O

DSCF0969

I went back to office to clear some work on Saturday afternoon and then cabbed down together with misterchewy to meet Adelene and Alvin in the evening. Dinner was at KPO Cafe Bar along Killiney Road! KPO stands for Killiney Post Office. I had been here more than 3 years ago and the brunch was not bad. Didn’t review this place back then as this blog wasn’t born yet. Haha.

DSCF0954

Very chill ambience, complete with dim lighting and music in the background.

DSCF0945

DSCF0943

DSCF0935

We ordered the Straight Cut Fries ($11) because it was stated on the menu that the fries are infused with truffle oil. We were able to detect hints of truffle but it’s actually really mild. Not fantastic at all. Wouldn’t recommend this.

DSCF0925

Pizza Yorkshire ($29) was paper thin and was topped with slices of yorkshire pork and mozzarella cheese.

DSCF0936

Fish and Chips ($23)

DSCF0934

Prawn Pasta ($24)

DSCF0938

I know I’m weird but I was really keen on trying the KPO Hokkien Mee ($15). To my surprise, they actually do it quite well! There were also bits of fried pork lard in it. I love my fried hokkien mee swimming with gravy and this is exactly what I wanted. Not forgetting the superb sambal chilli that came with it.

Thanks bestie for the treat! 😀

Momma Kong’s Crab Shack: Mum’s Recipe Made Hip By Sons

Momma Kong's

The bloggers, Derrick, Nadia, Maureen and I were planning on a quadruple date with our partners. So, sometime around end April this year, we met up for dinner at Momma Kong’s Crab Shack which makes this blog post two months overdue but heng ah, I’m not the last 😛 Hehehe.

_MG_6845

Somehow, it ended up with Derrick being ‘responsible’ for coming up with a dinner place probably because he was the only male blogger in the whatsapp convo. We listed some conditions such as centralized location and air-conditioned place, etc, and Derrick suggested having crabs at Momma Kong’s, which we readily applauded. It meets our criteria of being centralized at Chinatown, it is air-conditioned, and on top of that, it was (at the time of our visit) a relatively new place that we had not blogged about before! LOL.

_MG_6841

The interior of Momma Kong’s is simple and minimalistic, very laid-back and unpretentious. Youngsters who love eating crabs should be seen and heard at Momma Kong’s, as this place blasts R&B music and serves a wide variety of alcoholic drinks. What I like most is how Momma Kong’s Crab Shack came about. First time restaurateur and chef Edmund Kong was craving for his mother’s home-cooked crabs one day and he attempted to recreate her recipe. While at it, he found that it was too tedious to cook them on a regular basis and an idea struck him.

_MG_6831

Edmund had this ingenious idea to cook the crabs in batches, freeze them, and then heat them up in individual boxes whenever the craving hits. Saves time and trouble! Along came the thought of opening a restaurant which was then put into action. If you are not completely sold on the idea of eating pre-cooked crabs, not to worry, the crabs are cooked-to-order for eat-in, take away and delivery. Currently, crabs are served fresh in order to ensure that customers have the best possible taste and experience with their food. With regards to the reheating of crab in boxes, Edmund is working with external consultants to perfect the process and will be launching that once the quality of the products that customers experience from Momma Kong’s can be guaranteed.

_MG_6808

Don’t believe? We put the Steamed Crab ($38, 3 at $110) to the test! Steeped in fragrant huadiao jiu, the sweetness and freshness of the crab really shined through. I seldom eat steamed crabs but if the crabs are fresh, then steamed is the way to go!

_MG_6817-horz

Don’t leave without trying Momma Kong’s signature Crab Beehoon Soup ($38, 3 at $110) which will definitely warm your belly on a cold rainy day. The broth is rich and milky, and we finished the entire bowl in no time!

_MG_6835

I’m not exactly a fan of Chilli Crab ($38, 3 at $110) but surprisingly, I actually liked Momma Kong’s rendition which was mildly spicy and not grossly sweet. Their Fried Mantou ($1.50 each, minimum 2 pieces) were also so much better than that of most places!

_MG_6836

Lastly, let me introduce my favoritestest of all, the Black Pepper Crab ($38, 3 at $110). It was definitely a winner and a crowd pleaser. Very spicy, addictive and shiok! I admit, I licked the gravy clean with my mantou. LOL. Finger licking good I tell you.

The Ascot @ The Grandstand: Authentic English Gastrogrub

Tasting Invite

_MG_7234-horz

Wotcha chewys! Sometime back, misterchewy and I dropped by The Ascot at The Grandstand, formally known as Turf City. It was our first time at The Grandstand but we had been to quite a few of the seafood restaurants with our families when this place was still called Turf City. The change is quite huge and the place is livened up with many eateries and large crowds. Really glad to see that! 🙂

_MG_7298

Owner Sylvester Fedor Thang chatted with us for a bit and asked if we know what The Ascot is all about. He previously spent two years studying in the UK and wanted to recreate the very best of the quintessential English pub experience right here in Singapore. Lovingly referred to as a British ‘gastrogrub’ by Sylvester, he wanted to serve authentic British cuisine and Singaporeans would be exposed to a whole lot more than just the usual Fish & Chips.

_MG_7301

The Ascot at The Grandstand is named after the Ascot Racecourse, which is located in Berkshire. It seems that Sylvester is determined to share a piece of what he had experienced in UK with his fellow Singaporeans. Not surprisingly, The Ascot is very popular among expats as the food reminds them of home.

_MG_7240-horz

I had always wanted to try Toffee Apple Cider because I had such a hard time finding it at various supermarkets. It tasted really sweet and a little bitter. I think I still prefer beer 😛 The husband had a bottle of Pear Cider which was less sweet and more refreshing.

_MG_7258

I was initially kinda skeptical of the Strawberry spinach salad with crumbled blue cheese, pistachios, bacon & avocado ($18) but the crazy unusual combination worked surprisingly well! The blue cheese was undoubtedly pungent and had a sharp acidic flavor but the sweetness derived from the strawberry slices and raspberry vinaigrette countered this well.

_MG_7253

The husband and I were both surprised by how unique this bowl of Smoked tomato soup ($8) tasted, very full-bodied with a slightly smoked flavor to it. At the same time, it was rich, tangy, and a little sweet tasting. This certainly whetted our appetite for the remaining dishes to come!

The Cold Cut Platter ($18), featuring 3 types of cold cuts served with silver onions, gherkins, scotch egg & homemade bread, is a must order at The Ascot. Obviously, the scotch egg stole the show. It is essentially hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in bread crumbs and baked or deep-fried. Perhaps I should try this in my own kitchen next time!

A bunch of bangers ($20) would definitely serve as a perfect pub grub, or gastro grub in this context. Have I ever told you that misterchewy and I loveeee sausages? I think we would have been on cloud nine if we had ordered beer instead of cider. Sausages + Beer = Heaven. We had two broiled sausages (instead of three because we don’t eat beef) on bubble and squeak drizzled with onion gravy. Bubble and squeak is a British dish made with shallow-fried leftover vegetables. Very interesting and we loved it.

Since this The Ascot is a British gastrogrub, we did not expect the Chicken Tikka Masala ($18) to come into the picture. Tender pieces of chicken were marinated in yoghurt and spices. Bathed in creamy and spicy curry sauce, this dish was very addictive and we couldn’t help dipping pieces of naan into the gravy even though we were quite full by then.

The Roasted chicken served with vegetables & potato lyonnais ($24) was even more tender than the chicken tikka masala. The first few bites were not bad but I soon found that the BBQ-like marination was too thick and sweet for my liking.

_MG_7290

The husband and I felt that the desserts wrapped things up really nicely and we were very satisfied. Served warm, the Classic Bread & Butter Pudding ($9) and the vanilla ice cream were a match made in heaven. Moist, fluffy and slightly spongy, we enjoyed this dessert thoroughly!

We saved the best for last, and true enough, the Deep-fried Mars Bars in batter ($8) tasted as awesome as it sounds. Thick, gooey, caramelized goodness enveloped in a light, crispy and savory batter. This was a real sweet treat!

MUSEO @ Quayside Isle: A Delightful Gastronomical Experience Where Art Meets Food

Tasting Invite

_MG_7511

I was pleasantly surprised upon finding out that MUSEO (pronounced as ‘MOO-ZAY-O’) at the Quayside Isle on Sentosa Island is opened by the brilliant folks behind Arteastiq, which I had previously blogged about before. Even though I had only been there once, I loved the wonderful idea of combining art with food, making it a social painting and tea sipping place.

_MG_7487

MUSEO means ‘museum’ in Italian, which brings to mind fine exhibits by world-renowned artists, all displayed in an elegant and refined setting. Incorporating its unique take to the term, MUSEO has translated the concept into gastronomic treats exquisitely presented with a contemporary twist.

_MG_7480

Every single detail of its offerings, as well as interior atmosphere, down to its lighting, wall displays and music, are crafted with deliberate care to reflect a fine taste in food and art which all art enthusiasts would appreciate.

MUSEO provides the perfect weekend retreat for all city dwellers, as well as a peaceful sanctuary for working executives craving for a haven to wind down their minds after a long day of work. Sunset dining in the plush and luxurious setting, topped off with the perfect selection of house music and magnificent view of the marina littered with beautiful yachts, creates a paradisiacal holiday for everyone.

The venue is also perfect for a romantic first date between budding lovers. The creative vibe in the air and MUSEO’s integrated social painting studio allows all inspired souls to create their very own masterpiece.

As mentioned in my previous post, we had a staycation at Movenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa and we took a feeder bus to Quayside Isle which was really convenient.

The drink that I wanted was unavailable and I went along with what was being recommended to me. Thyme and Grapes ($18), a concoction of fresh black grapes, unfiltered sake, vodka and thyme tasted deliciously sweet yet a little potent at the same time. This would definitely make a perfect after-dinner drink for ladies. The husband didn’t like his Berries Galore ($16), which tasted too strongly of vodka.

_MG_7449

Among its many new creations, MUSEO is the first to serve food in exquisite glass cups. Simply named ‘Dine-In-A-Cup’, this refreshing concept is a guaranteed hit amongst the young, trendy and sophisticated, who crave intimacy and convenience even when dining more formally.

One of MUSEO’s selling point is its Mezzanine selection, which is named after some of the most eminent and celebrated art pieces in the world. Somehow, this made us appreciate the food that we tried at MUSEO even more and we relished every bite. Smile of Mona Lisa ($12) was truly unforgettable, oozing with yummy molten camembert cheese. It was served with cranberry sauce but we prefered it on its own. Picasso’s Blues ($12), deep fried prawns flavoured with lavender were crunchy but failed to leave a lasting impression.

_MG_7432-horz

Our favorite was Joys of Life ($12), the smoked roast pork belly served with hot sauce really hit the spot! It was one of the best roast pork belly that we had ever had. We even dipped it in the cranberry sauce that was supposed to go with the deep fried cheese, and it tasted just as amazing. We enjoyed The Kiss ($12) as well, barbequed squid with chilli and pepper was spicy enough but the sauce was a bit on the watery side. Diners have the flexibility in customising their own unique Mezzanine set by choosing 4 of the 12 Mezzanines available for only $39.

Our mains! Looks quite good right?

_MG_7469-horz

We found the Two-Way Lamb ($35) an interesting dish. Besides the roasted marinated lamb rack which was fork tender albeit a bit dry, it was also served with shepard pie which had been baked with lamb. The cherry tomato chutney complemented the lamb rack well and enhanced its flavors.

_MG_7471-horz

I can’t remember what misterchewy thought of the Pan Roasted Cod Fillet ($33) but I didn’t quite take to the onion relish which reminded me of Indian cuisine. Not that I have anything against that, in fact, I love Indian food. Perhaps the onion relish was very overpowering and I could not really taste the natural flavors of the cod fillet. The mushroom risotto was also too dry and sticky.

_MG_7503

We were looking forward to the Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake ($12) and was surprised by its small serving size. The chocolate cake had a vodka filled molten chocolate centre which was thick and rich. Gelato of choice includes champagne vanilla, chocolate or yuzu.

_MG_7505

I never order fruits as desserts but since the Eton Mess ($12) was recommended, we went along with it. Haha. On the overall, it was very sour, with diced strawberry and peach marinated with lemon juice and rum, topped with whipped cream. If your tolerance for sourness is very low, I suggest you don’t try this.

_MG_7509

The husband and I were impressed with MUSEO’s Mezzanine range and we certainly don’t mind going back just for that. Maybe we will try to paint something while we are there! Hahaha 😛
